**The killing mentioned is not true. Islam is a peaceful religion and advises peace, upholds peace. But if it is opposed physically and attacked then only it permits the Muslims to retaliate (fight back).Otherwise, there is no fight, no war.
The verse mentioned above (9:5) is special for the pagans of Makkah who had driven the prophet out of his city (Makkah) and he had to run away to madinah. The Pagans did not let the prophet rest there in Madinah too. They attacked Madinah quite a few times with large armies. But they were unable to damage the Muslim city.
Later when, the city of Makkah was liberated then it was ordered to kill the polytheists after four months amnesty. They could live for 4 months. After that they were not to be seen in that city. That was not too bad for them.**
You are being disingenuous and the koran says that if we don’t convert then it is quite all right to kill us and if we are people of the book then to subjugate us.
You can keep on thinking that islam means peace when it does not but don’t keep telling us that when it is not true.
If you think that death or subjugation means peace - then I suppose it is another definition problem that I talked about in a past post. I don’t want to be a muslim, I don’t want my, or anyone’s children, condemned to islam, and for islam that means death or subjugation - if they are ‘people of the book’.
I have read the koran and hadiths - and if one doesn’t want to read it these are excellent videos on the subject of violence in the koran/islam.

If it were so peaceful, mohammed himself wouldn’t have fought in so many battles himself. And we know about muslims looking at our land as the realm of war (dar al harb) and as such they are allowed to deceive us.
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 269: Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:
The Prophet said, “War is deceit.”
A similar Hadith is also found in Sunaan Abu Dawud
Here is the essence of the koran:
The Essence of the Qur’an
I am often met with disbelief when describing the violent content of the Islamic sacred works to others. One needs to read the book himself to understand the pervasiveness of violence and prejudice therein. A good summary has been compiled by one Islamic scholar, who precedes it with: “The following is the essence of the Qu’ran, the rest are fairy tales:”
Quran Surah 2: The Cow
Don’t bother to warn the disbelievers. Allah has blinded them. Theirs will be an awful doom. 6
Allah has sickened their hearts. A painful doom is theirs because they lie. 10
A fire has been prepared for the disbelievers, whose fuel is men and stones. 24
Disbelievers will be burned with fire. 39, 90
For disbelievers is a painful doom. 104
For unbelievers: ignominy in this world, an awful doom in the next. 114
Allah will leave the disbelievers alone for a while, but then he will compel them to the doom of Fire. 126
The doom of the disbelievers will not be lightened. 162
They will not emerge from the Fire. 167
Those who hide the Scripture will have their bellies eaten with fire. Theirs will be a painful doom. 174
How constant are they in their strife to reach the Fire! 175
Kill disbelievers wherever you find them. If they attack you, then kil them. Such is the reward of disbelievers. 191
War is ordained by Allah. 216
Those who die in their disbelief will burn forever in the Fire. 217
Disbelievers worship false gods. They will burn forever in the Fire. 257
Allah does not guide disbelievers. 264
“Give us victory over the disbelieving folk.” 286
