Anyone on here remember the old Catholic Answers forum?

I liked that too, I always enjoyed checking everytime I logged in.

I think it was next to our username. A green dot I think if you were on. Black if off?

Definitely preferred most of the old format. When you’re with something for more than 13 years —which is what it was until the switchover in 2017–you are accustomed to a certain style and atmosphere. I like the Lounge, but if you get suspended it takes a while to be readmitted. And my personal opinion is that, at least for a couple of years from the ‘switch’ to the present, there was a sea change in attitude. It was strange, because the National Catholic Register stayed the same, balanced, but the forum ‘hierarchy’ really cracked down on anything that could be viewed as tradition. Look at any thread about headcovering, or the TLM, and usually within a day or two it’s either locked for good, or full of screaming people lambasting those ‘hateful rad’ trads’. The screamers and mockers of ‘tradition” seem able to say anything they choose; try to ask why and you’ll be the one flagged and suspended for your ‘too rigid’ attitude. Definitely not the Catholic Answers that sustained so many of us.

Yes, I remember the old forum too and liked it much better. And I miss people like EasterJoy who no longer come to the forum.

I miss how you used to be able to have stuff like a quote, a picture, or gif at the bottom of each of you posts. I never took advantage of that feature myself, but I liked seeing this one poster’s gif of the hand-biting cat everytime he or she posted.

So you could actually express an opinion on the old website without worrying about getting flagged and possibly suspended? It’s frustrating to have someone quote and challenge a post and when responding to that challenge end up getting flagged or suspended. All the flagging here limits the scope of conversation. I say we should know who flags us just like we know who likes our post. Maybe that way some people won’t be so quick to flag.

What makes you think no one got suspended? It was called banned and it did happen there as well. People were free to contact a mod, same as here.

Uh um I wasn’t here so I don’t think anything about it. I asked a question.

I’m too new for the old system but did it have flagging? I think flags are probably the most misused action we have. Often, it seems like some use it as an alternative to a thumbs down type action…meaning they disagree with a posters opinion, not that it is an inappropriate comment. Perhaps another way to express disagreement should be available like a cracked heart meaning disagree as a heart usually means they agree or like the comment?

Flagging is too often used as a weapon rather than a violation and I think posters that get flag happy should themselves be disciplined…perhaps they are? I’m just often upset when a perfectly rational or personal opinion is flagged. It frustrates an often good debate into personal vendettas…JMHO!

Another way the old forums were better: the moderators often gave us the reason why a thread has been closed. It did not happen all the time, but, it was nice to know. The closest thing we ever get to an explanation around here is the automatic one generated from a large number of flags. Also, the moderators often gave us a warning before closing the thread if things got heated.

BTW, does anyone know if you can get suspended for flag-stalking or just doing a bunch of flagging for no good reason?

To be honest, I don’t know. I’ve never heard of someone getting suspended for that, but then again, we’re never told why someone is suspended.

I think he was referring more to the flagging, then he said, possibly suspended.

You have to admit that the flags didn’t exist in the old format. You could certainly be suspended or even banned but that came from the moderator.

In the old days you could report problem posts, but if you were just upset because you didn’t like what was said, the mod would say well that’s no excuse to ban or whatever, and they could pretty quickly assess—and even suspend/ban—those who were constantly saying, “That post breaks forum RULES” (when the posts didn’t).

Today all it takes is one poster going ‘flag’ for any reason whatsoever and the dialog will get shut down. And it has been a problem, and even those who like the new format better say that the wholesale flagging can be a problem. AND whereas in the old system the moderator would be the one who made the decision, today you have no idea who objected to what in a flagged post.
