So did I , but Iāve just discovered that its first appearance was in the 1623 hymnal Auserlesene, Catholische, Geistliche KirchengesƤng (Selected Catholic Spiritual Church-Songs) .I thought at least the melody had Protestant origins.
I have not heard it at a Catholic Mass yet either; but interestingly enough, my dad, who was born in the early 50s and was raised Catholic, says they used to sing it at Mass. I donāt know if the period when they sang it was pre- or post-Vatican II, but I thought that was interesting. It is a spiritual; it was most likely composed by African American slaves. I like that one, too.At a Good Friday mass Iāve heard the hymn Were You There When They Crucified my Lord.
