The top Catholic leader in Michigan slammed a big liberal Mass today in Detroit, saying it had significant abuses and he ordered a review of a Ferndale priest who led the services before 1,500 Catholics, a church spokesman said.

Defying Archbishop of Detroit Allen Vigneron, a Catholic priest from Ferndale led a Mass today in Cobo Center that was organized by the American Catholic Council, a controversial umberalla group of liberal Catholics. And dozens of Catholic priests and deacons from metro Detroit attended the Mass, said organizers.

Rev. Bob Wurm, 78, a retired Catholic priest, presided over the Mass and Eucharistic prayer to some 1,500 assembled inside Cobo Center today. He and others participated despite a strict order from Archbiship Allen Vigneron for priests and deacons to not take part in today’s Mass because it was led by groups considered heretical by the Catholic Church and could violate Church law. Vigneron warned in a letter that clergy could be punished and defrocked for participating in the Mass.

Its not good when a priest, even if retired, defies the clear and publicly stated wish of his bishop

Whether or not Fr. Wurm violated Church law remains to be seen, I guess.

Is anyone surprised?

I’m surprised that a priest from the archdiocese of Detroit would defy his bishop and participate. If any priests were to attend, I would have expected them to come from elsewhere. Was Fr. Wurm the only Catholic priest there?

It’s heartbreaking to hear and see “Catholic” people demonstrate such in-your-face rebellion to God-given authority. They are not liberal but disobedient, unbiblical, and sinful. A spirit of pride and rebellion is exactly what Satan loves. A spirit of humility and submission is what God loves.

These people need to repent and stop pushing their personal agendas. The Apostle Paul warned us that in the last days there would be those who would not accept sound doctrine but rather they will find teachers that please them and tell them what they want to hear. If a person has a problem or disagreement with their authority they need to privately, respectfully, and humbly go to them and talk about it.

It seems for a small minority of Catholics that they want to go the way of Protestantism which can be summed up from the book of Judges in the OT: “and everyone did what was right in his own eyes”.

I humbly plead with our faithful priests, bishops, and the archbishop of Detroit to not only hold the line but also to aggressively deal with this real and growing threat to the body of Christ, His Church.

I would be surprised if some did not attend. However, Archbishop Vigneron did put the conference on notice that it would be scrutinized and that any priest participating in a “forbidden concelebration” faced the possibility of being laicized.

This may have encouraged conference organizers to step carefully. The planned concelebration which the archbishop referred to might have intended to use one or more womenpriests.

I am not surprised at all. I know Fr. Wurm, he baptized me when I was 35, and I attended his parish for a short time. Once I was received into the Church I left there. There were regular liturgical abuses at his parish that I witnessed with my own eyes. He has always defined the Church according to his own rules. Participating in this event and his comments are just a continuation of how he has always been.

Now - the fact that the Archdiocese of Detroit never did anything about him before…that’s another story, and a question that should be answered.

That is a perceptive question.

Of course, Archbishop Vigneron threatened laicization against any priest who participated in a forbidden concelebration. However, if the conference attendees accept the validity of female ordination, then a male priest wouldn’t be needed to concelebrate. Why not let a woman (or women) celebrate the Mass alone? Aren’t their sacraments valid, in the eyes of the attendees? Or do the attendees have doubts?

I have not seen any photos of the liturgy that is under review, so that very well may have happened and is one of the issues being investigated. It’s just an unknown until/unless some photos surface. But I would be surprised if they didn’t have them participate.

True. In the meantime, we can only speculate on the basis of women “priests” who attended the conference and “A Participative Pentecost Liturgy” as stated in their programme for the day.

Whether or not Fr. Wurm violated Church law remains to be seen, I guess.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t having a Mass without the Bishop’s permission is a violation of Church law? If true, then we already know Fr. Wurm violated Church law.
