Interesting…
Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Denver appears poised to succeed Justin Rigali as archbishop of Philadelphia.
Persons familiar with the process say Rigali will host a news conference Tuesday to announce that Pope Benedict XVI has named Chaput, 66, to lead the 1.5 million-member archdiocese, which spans five counties.
Chaput (pronounced Sha-pew) is a member of the Capuchin order of Franciscan priests and has led the Denver archdiocese since 1997.
A member of the Prairie Band of the Potawatomi Tribe of American Indians, he is the second Native American bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States, and its first Native American archbishop.
He is known as an articulate conservative who regularly exhorts his flock to live out the Catholic Church’s teachings on social justice, especially its opposition to abortion and the death penalty, and its care for the poor and immigrants.

We’ll probably never know, but I wonder if this was a vote of no confidence due to the sex scandal in Philadelphia.

Oh no! I am pleased for the Archbishop but devastated that we’re about to lose him in Colorado.
I am saddened for the people of Colorado, but Denver is not one of the traditional US cities for hosting a red hat. For Archbishop Chaput to move up probably required him to relocate to New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Detroit, Washington, Boston or Philadelphia. I am glad he has gotten this opportunity.

The pope is promoting some of the more energetic and articulate “traditional” Catholics to some of the key sees. I, of course, do not know for sure, but this is a change from the days when liberals occupied the sees in Los Angeles, Chicago, and DC. The former Cardinal archbishop of Los Angeles impressed me as more a liberal than a Catholic. I got to the point of questioning if he were a Christian. He seemed to belong in the Episcopal Church.

As a member of the Philadelphia archdiocese, I can say we feel blessed and honored by the announcement.

You know people keep saying that but that is stuck in the idea that the North is where things happen. The Pope has acknowledged that there is growth in the south. This was one of the reasons that Houston got a red hat even without being a traditional US city to host a red hat.

I am really happy for him. I love hearing him talk. East coast better watch out. You got Dolan and Chuput in the same area. Two strong voices.

Will both of you ^ please start working on Chris Matthews (from Philly) a.s.a.p.? His public advocacy for SSM is increasing in frequency to an audience of millions, despite how on the same broadcasts he declares how solidly Catholic he is.

Amen! An exciting time!

The scandal probably put more emphasis on the need for a strong voice in Phil. But Cardinal Rigalli is well over retirement age. The search for his successor must have been going on for quite a while beforehand.

Here’s the deal with Archbishop Chaput. His email is on the Archdiocese website. You email to that address and you know what? HE emails you back. Don’t try this at home kids. This guy is the real article.

He’s a practicing Catholic and we need more of that in the Episcopacy. Now, if the USCCB would just publish a non-mealy mouth voters guide for 2012 the ship would start to turn.

After O’Malley get sent to Boston, I e-mailed Chaput to the efect, that I thougt he should have got the job. He replied with no false modesty. He is a man who know his true worth but there is little pride in him. Given O’Malley’s performance in Boston, I still wish Chaput has gotten to that post. But what a zoo that place is!

Tom Peters has some interesting analysis on what this means for Phil.

The news is also being reported by the NCRegister.

According to the NCReg article, Bishop Chaput was not on the list of three presented to the Pope (terna). The Pope reportedly made an “off the list” personal decision.

Evidently it is. You have to remember how bad that ship was listing when he took over, however.

According to what I read, a committee presented the Pope with 3 names of bishops who were possible successors to Rigali in Philadelphia. Chaput was not one of those names. The Pope decided to ignore the list and appoint Chaput instead. This speaks volumes in terms of confidence and can only be seen as a promotion for the Archbishop. Clearly, the Archbishop’s voice is one the Pope hopes to hear more of, and the fact that he has been moved closer to the Washington establishment means he will be more difficult for Catholic politicians to ignore. I don’t know what to make of Chaput personally, but it is obvious that the Pope thinks highly of what the Archbishop has been saying and doing. I think Chaput’s appointment points to the Holy Father’s desire to see a more enhanced political voice on the part of U.S. bishops. This is a very interesting turn of events for the U.S. Church.

This morning the Holy See announced that Pope Benedict XVI had accepted the retirement of Justin Francis Cardinal Rigali and had named Archbishop Charles Joseph Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. as Archbishop of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Archbishop Chaput had been serving as Archbishop of Denver, Colorado.

Also the Holy Father accepted the retirement of Bishop John Kevin Boland and named Bishop-elect Gregory John Hartmayer, O.F.M. Conv. as Bishop of Savannah, Georgia, USA.
