I’m from philly and I think that was one of the issues along with the fact that Cardinal Rigali is at his retirement age.
We’ll probably never know, but I wonder if this was a vote of no confidence due to the sex scandal in Philadelphia.

I’m from St. Louis, but I used to live in Philly (Swarthmore). My daughter was born there. This is why I am taking such an interest. Cardinal Rigali was Archbishop in St. Louis before he got to Philadelphia. When C. Rigali left St. Louis, then Archbishop Burke came in, and he had his hands full dealing with the abuse issue. Under Arbshp Rigali, there were years when no or maybe one ordination happened. Under Burke, the seminary exploded. We now are having to renovate the seminary to accommodate the many seminarians there. In addition, many seminarians were sent to study in Rome by Archbishop Burke. This has resulted in our new priests being firmly anchored in the orthodoxy of the Church.👍

It’s been exhilarating for St. Louis! 👍

The Facebook page with Pope Benedict’s name on it claims the following: Benedict XVI, embittered and disappointed by the behavior of Rigali about pedophilia, has resigned him with force.

Obviously that is not B16’s official page or anything but it is an interesting claim nonetheless.

Congratulations to Archbishop Chaput! Boy, first Archbishop Gomez gets Los Angeles and now Archbishop Chaput gets Philly! Two for two and anyone who couldn’t see this coming was blind!

My chief concern about this is who will replace him in Denver. The seminaries there are bursting at the seams, because of his ardent work among the youth of the area and his devotion to missionaries. He just named a new director for the Respect Life office, who should be a crackerjack. He got Catholics involved in politics. They cannot afford to slip backwards. I don’t know anything about the relatively new assistant bishop there, but it doesn’t seem that he would be given the nod. That means more shakeups if they were to bring in someone from the outside. It is like dominoes. I really don’t envy the Holy Father – it is a nerveracking balancing act.

Does the Facebook post have a source? I cannot imagine PBXVI being “embittered.”

Me either, that’s why I posted the link so that people could judge for themselves.

I can imagine him being upset or even angry. You can see hints of that in some of his statements on other topics, SSPX, etc. He also didn’t earn the moniker “God’s Rottweiler” before becoming Pontiff by being a shrinking violet. 😉 I think this is a very, very, good thing. There are issues as Christians that are supposed to make us angry.

But embittered? I agree with you, I have a difficult time imagining that. He seems pretty filled with hope and love to me.

So what is the process for choosing Archbishop Charles’ successor? Does the Holy Father appoint one or does the auxiliary bishop rise into the position? Just wondering.

Thanks!

Father announced this from the pulpit this morning and mentioned that Archbishop Chaputs successor has not yet been named. I am going to miss him but he is exactly what a damaged diocese like Philadelphia needs.

Watching from PA, congratulations to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. God Bless everyone there and their new Prelate. My prayers to you all.

My prayers to the people of Denver. You have lost a keeper. But pray for our Holy Father for his next appointment to Denver, and for this appointee.

I’m in Pittsburgh, which is a suffragan diocese (I think that’s the term, right?) of Philly, and I’m pretty excited about this even though it’s not a direct effect here. 😃

I am not officially Catholic yet but I am from the Philadelphia area and this looks like a good move to me! Guess I will meet him as part of my completing RCIA as I was supposed to meet the Cardinal next spring.

Interesting. Bshp Stika was a monsignor in St. Louis under the Archbshp Rigali. He did a lot of confirmations for Cdnl. Rigali. :ehh:

I wonder what John Romeri will be doing?
I like Bishop Stika quite a bit and most orthodox Catholics I know seem to like him as well. Our diocese was rocked by the abuse scandal several years back and the impression I get from most Catholics around here is that bishop Stika has really righted the ship, created an open and effective process for handling the issue, and been an effective leader for the most part.

Of course, this will soon not affect me much since I am moving to another diocese, but I am very fond of it here and want good things for the faith and the people here.

Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver has been chosen by Pope Benedict XVI to become the next Archbishop of Philadelphia, succeeding the retiring Cardinal Justin Rigali. The July 19 …

I agree about Bishop Stika. But we had a good bishop before him and the Diocese of Lexington is now benefiting from his wisdom. He was a big proponent of the Latin Mass.

The process is the same as it was for Cardinal Rigali.

The Apostolic Nuncio does an initial report & investigation - on the needs of the diocese and possible candidates. He suggests three.

From there the process moves on to Rome - at the Congregation of Bishops. They review the information, do any additional research them deem necessary, and then forward the information with their recommendation to the Pope.

The Pope can accept the recommendation, pick one of the other candidates, pick someone else entirely, or send it back to the Congregation (or the Nuncio) for further work.

A more detailed document is available describing the process here (.pdf file on the USCCB website).

Our local (Denver’s) loss is the universal Church’s gain. We rejoiced when Abp. Chaput came to us from Rapid City because we knew we were in for some awesome leadership, and we were not disappointed in the least. May God bless him and the worldwide Church!

On the lighter side… Philly got one pitcher from us (in fact, from my old alma mater, Arvada West High School)… now they get another (Abp. Chaput has been known to toss out more than one season-starting first pitch for the Rockies)!

I’m in Baltimore and happy Archbishop Chaput will be near by.
