Perhaps that is because we have cheapened life so much in our culture - abortion, contraception, the demand for euthanasia, the constant barrage of violence on TV.

Murder isn’t shocking because we are no longer shockable.

I suppose you could validly say that there is a degree of utilitarian reasoning involved in any prudential judgment; we are after all trying to determine the course of action that yields the best result. Utilitarian reasoning is invalid with regard to abortion since abortion is an intrinsically evil act but it is not invalid with regard to capital punishment since that is not intrinsically evil. There are practical considerations to make and this is entirely proper.

The utilitarian foundation of “defense of society”, as recently used by the Church, has the opposite result of what the Church has decided upon.

A defense of society foundation calls for more executions, not less.’

The Church’s revised position spares more murderers at a cost of more innocents murdered.

Of all endeavors that put innocents at risk, is there one with a better record of sparing innocent lives than the US death penalty? Unlikely.
