Imagine this perfectly analogous hypothetical. Suppose the federal government starts regulating the content of school lunches at both public and private schools. Then imagine that the federal government requires all schools to serve pork fat to their students because of its nutritional value. Jews — and those who run Jewish schools — would be apoplectic, and I don’t even want to imagine how Muslims would react.
In this hypothetical the ethics of keeping kosher or halal are immaterial. The key issue is the same as it is in the contraception mandate: Does the Constitution really still protect the free exercise of religion?
Once the federal government ceases to be a government of constitutionally limited powers and starts regulating every aspect of our lives, religious freedom exists only to the extent that the majority forbears to infringe upon it. Alas, that’s what our country has come to. It’s a sad state of affairs, and one that should make Jews every bit as depressed and fearful for the future as it makes Catholics.

This should be a warning to Democrats and Obama who think them trying to turn the HHS mandate into a womens rights issue will win over the womens vote. I think religious liberty is a bigger issue to most women than having contraception covered in health insurance - nobody has problem getting access to birth control currently, it is cheap and accessible.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There was a sharp rebuke Wednesday from Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan that put even more pressure on the president to calm a widening election year uproar. The issue at hand was the president’s insistence that Catholic institutions provide free birth control to their employees.

He sure said that right! Obama needs to get a life and quit trying to bully the Church around. I think he will regret his actions when he is defeated in the elections in November.

During a recent conversation about the HHS anti-conscience mandate, a friend who is neither Catholic nor particularly religious asked the following rhetorical question about the Obama administration: Do these people know who they’re messing with? Her point, of course, was that the Church has spent nearly two millennia crushing attempts by secular rulers to dictate the way it carries out its charitable ministries. Commanding Catholic hospitals to fund sterilizations, contraceptives, and abortifacients isn’t like twisting the arm of some roundheel congressman. It’s going to take more than the usual Chitown chicanery to cow a venerable and well-funded organization that has brought more than one emperor to his knees.

New Hampshire: Bill Would End Requirement on Contraceptives Coverage Among Some Employers

Obama’s Political Calculation (and NEW VIDEO on HHS Mandate)

The Obama Administration is making a political calculation. 98% of women (even Catholic women) have used contraception. So they think it was a brilliant move (as a way to progress their regressive agenda) to mandate that Catholic organizations (actually almost all organizations and businesses, not just Catholic) provide contraception (and sterilizations and abortifacients) to their employees.

They thought, this will rile up those “cooky, extremist” folks who are against contraception and remind everyone else how extremely crazy they are — therefore marginalizing them. In the meantime, everyone else will be excited to get free contraception and “better health care” for women.

What it revealed is how flippantly and inconsequential Obama and his supporters view your religious freedom.

It also revealed Obama’s lack of understanding of the Catholic Church. His Catholic counsel is one that views the bishops as insignificant. And one that desperately wants to believe in a democratic magisterium of the uncatechized (non-mass-attending) masses.

Well this year, he’s going to get a lesson in reality. And his politically calculated provocation is going to backfire on him as he’s created an amazing opportunity for Catholics and non-Catholics alike to learn what the Church teaches on issues like contraception and the necessity and role of our bishops. More profoundly, it’s becoming a lesson for all Americans in religious liberty…which is exactly what this issue is really about.

I think many here are asking the wrong questions. The question should be, “Who’s interests is Obama seeking to enact?” Who is the guy working for? It certainly isn’t the American people.

Obama is a Marxist. Obama is bought and paid for by those who put him in power (Goldman Sachs, etc). Obama is a banking cartel puppet. Obama is Zionism’s best friend as well. Now what is the common power behind these three? The same group whose house was left unto them desolate and have fomented persecution of the Church in every major persecution of the Christian era.
I don’t agree with your labelling of Obama. He is not a Marxist, banking cartel puppet, or Zionist. Whose interests is he trying to meet by requiring employers to offer insurance that provides coverage for contraception? Most reasonable people would say that he is responding to the interests of women of reproductive age, most of whom want such coverage.

Most reasonable people want lots of things but it takes a special kind of person to believe that others should pay for whatever she wants. That, loosely speaking, is Marxism: from each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

Yes, Obama is a Marxist.

And I, and arguably ALL Americans, would love to have free emergency room visits. Why is he not responding to THAT interest? That’s a much more universal “want” than contraception coverage. I’m not saying I agree with the previous poster necessarily. I’m simply saying that one should look much more carefully at this issue, and not dismiss it as the president simply responding to an interest.

White House works to influence the Supreme Court on ObamaCare
Just for fun, close your eyes and imagine a Republican president was summoning dozens of non-profit organizations to coordinate activities, including a prayer vigil, for his signature legislation, and imagine the media reaction. While you’re at it, imagine that same Republican president was making blatant attempts to influence the Supreme Court in defense of his legislation:
The advocates and officials mapped out a strategy to call attention to tangible benefits of the law, like increased insurance coverage for young adults. Sensitive to the idea that they were encouraging demonstrations, White House officials denied that they were trying to gin up support by encouraging rallies outside the Supreme Court, just a stone’s throw from Congress on Capitol Hill. They said a main purpose of this week’s meeting, in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House, was to give the various groups a chance to learn of the plans.
For months, Democrats in Congress and progressive groups have urged the White House to make a more forceful defense of the health care law, which is denounced almost daily by Republican lawmakers and presidential candidates.
Don’t forget that the American people denounced ObamaCare daily too, New York Times! They hate ObamaCare. They’ve hated it since the day it was passed, and they hate it even more, as its grim practical-joke peanut cans pop open, and throw budget-blasting, liberty-shredding surprises in their faces. At the moment, polls show Americans oppose ObamaCare by 11 to 13 points. A December poll from the Associated Press showed they opposed ObamaCare by twenty points.
To be sure, the opponents of ObamaCare are not sitting on their hands:
Opponents of the law will be active as well and are planning to show their sentiments at a rally on the Capitol grounds on March 27, the second day of Supreme Court arguments. Republican lawmakers, including Senator Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania and Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, are expected to address the rally, being organized by Americans for Prosperity, with support from conservative and free-market groups like the Tea Party Express.

I read no mean-spiritedness in any post. What is at the heart of the contention is political ideology which is threatening the very freedom given by God alone. Unfortunately, the philosophy spills out in the form of a culture war, and thank you, but Catholic Christians have no choice but to defend and follow the moral code of Christ as laid out in the teachings of the Church.

If you’ve studied Marxism then you know that it is a real-live ideology and that those who follow that ideology are called Marxists. While you and I may out our faith in God, Obama and his kind put their faith in Government. Attacking the Catholic Church in order to boost Government is a page right out of Marxism (not that the Marxists invented it).
