I haven’t been keeping up entirely with this thread, so I don’t know if it’s been posted yet, but here is the letter our Cardinal Archbishp wrote: archgh.org/default/Documents/021212_HHS_Letter.pdf

This was read at Mass this morning and included in our bulletin.

I admit I teared up as Fr. read the letter with quiet determination and received a round of applause when it was over. Fr. finished by saying “We are in a holy war.”

How wonderful…and true! I’m with you all in prayer. The net shows that the liberals are out criticizing the bishops and those who supported them (the catholic liberals who spoke out). They are declaring victory, in short. The fight is over, per them, and Obama is victorious. I hope they are wrong. Catholic faithful should maintain solidarity and faithfulness and loyalty to church and her Bishops.

The fight is most surely NOT over. Obamacare goes to the Supreme Court in March of this year. All of our problems with the HHS mandate are from Obamacare.

The bishops are standing firm.

Obama is in bad shape for getting elected in November. His poll numbers are poor in swing states, nowhere near what they were in 2008. And guess what? The swing states have a lot of Catholics in them.

Actually, I’m not sure that they were actually surprised by the Catholic reaction. I think the White House has calculated that the Catholic reaction would be fiercely negative.

But I also think that they calculated that if they didn’t give their pro-abortion pro-reproductive rights base exactly what they wanted–and they wanted THIS–that reaction would have been even worse. And they’ve figured that if they back off by an inch, the backlash among their base will be fierce. And they’re more worried about their base than they are about staunch Catholics. They’ve written us off anyway. And they figure a lot of Catholics are willing to sell their souls–and more importantly for them, their votes–for free contraception anyway, so they are counting on those Catholic votes.
I don’t think that the White House expected all of the bishops to come out in unison like they have. Nothing like this has happened in decades. In fact, not since the 60s. Obama has a lot of “catholic” advisors and I think they thought they might be able to fracture the official church and make bishop bicker with bishop like they did when John Kerry ran a few years ago.

And I think they made the same mistake that our own far-left dissidents have made for 20 years or more: Dissidents have stubbornly believed that if Catholics take birth control, even silently, that they will automatically side against the Church in a fight. That’s simply not true and there’s a lot of evidence to show it. Catholics have a soft spot for the Church even when violate her moral laws, and even if they disagree with the Church on some things. For example, Michael Sean Winters, who writes for the ultra-liberal National Catholic Reporter, has been writing about the mandate. He disagrees with the official church on just about everything, but he also says that he opposes the mandate in very forceful terms, and he says that Obama has lost his respect and his vote in November as a result of this mandate. Here’s the deal: Even if Mr. Winters disagrees with Church leaders, he cares what happens to the Church, and that’s absolutely huge.

Michael Sean Winters was interviewed by CBS News, and the most memorable line was emphatic and said at the beginning of the short interview: “Don’t be meddling in my Church.” Video (scroll down to bottom of page): newsbusters.org/blogs/brad-wilmouth/2012/02/12/cbs-highlights-catholic-democrat-alienated-obama-contraception-mandat

In this same vein, many bishops are quite liberal but they all have come out against the mandate. Progressives whine but many of them work for these liberal bishops and they will almost always follow the lead of their bishop. Strange but true. Part of it is that they do really believe but practice in a very modern way; part of it is that they fear for their jobs if they act up in public. Many liberals work for the church and it tends to suppress some kinds of bad behavior, particularly behavior that gets the bishop’s negative attention.

Catholic conservatives have whined about this “nest of liberals at the chancery” effect for decades. Well, here it’s helping all of us, “liberals at the chancery” and all. We are all Catholics.

It is great too see that Priests, Bishops and Cardinals are continuing to condemn the mandate.

I think the White House was so arrogant, they probably thought there would probably only be a little outrage from Bishops and that be it. They got it so wrong.

Jim,

I do think that Obama is sold on the idea that contraception is very important to many women. He may be right on that, but he’s not right on the idea that most people can’t afford it. They can, and in fact, many people already have coverage that gives them these things for free anyway. Many insurance companies think contraceptives save them money in hospital costs.

Also it has been suggested that Obama is picking a fight about social issues to avoid talking about the economy. This may be the case since it is a very typical Democratic strategy historically. Democrats almost always prefer arguing social issues as opposed to financial issues or foreign policy issues. However, this doesn’t really seem that profitable this year, for a lot of reasons. Maybe they’re doing it out of habit? 😛

I do know that Obama is very worried about his base, which is rapidly eroding. But I also know that the swing states that will decide the outcome in November are precisely the ones that have a lot of Catholics in them. That said, I have no idea what he’s thinking and why the timing, which seems to me like it ought to be bad from his point of view.

Then again, Obamacare is going to go before the Supreme Court in about 6 weeks. The mandate is part of Obamacare. If it wasn’t for Obamacare, we wouldn’t have the mandate. So, maybe they’re trying to get as much in place, in terms of irreversible change, as they can as soon as possible–so that maybe they can keep what they can get. That’s one possibility.

There are 27 states that have contended that Obamacare is unconstitutional. This is what is going to the Supreme Court. There are a host of other lawsuits as well. This is a very, very big fight, and its outcome will affect the whole country either way, not just religious organizations.

Thank you for being so resourceful and continuing providing all these information. It is important to know all these responses.

In this country, the government doesn’t get to tell employers what it’s religious beliefs are. Nor in this country does the government get to tell employers they have to pay for things agaisnt their beliefs. Obama has played a shell gave and gave the US another **** sandwich to eat. You see, as long as the employer has to pitch in for any part of the health insurance that covers artificial contraception, that is against the first amendment.

It is great too see that Priests, Bishops and Cardinals are continuing to condemn the mandate.
They are far too late in joining the fray. Secular statists have been attacking religion in this country for years and now when the “wolf” is at the door they react.

You are right, but remember Obama said he would change this country when he was running for presidency. And he kept that part of his promises.

By now people should realize how this president wants to change this country. He is changing America into another country, like China or Cuba. If we don’t want that, we must stop it.

You are right. Obama did say he would fundamentally change this country and not a single person batted an eyelid about it. They were to mesmerized by this young, smooth talking, half black man, who was not Bush to realize what this guy had in store for America.

It is never too late as long as we don’t make the same mistake in this November.
We need to talk to people, help them wake up and make the right choice this time.
Anyone will be less evil than Obama. I saw a bumper sticker the other day: “Nobama😃

These nuns are awesome and we support them financially along with the Poor Clares. Imagine…nuns in habits!!!
As I have mentioned before, I went to school with Mother Assumpta. She was a beautiful (in every way) majorette in the school band. It is wonderful to see her. Five other members of her class entered the Dominicans at the same time. God bless her.

How blessed were you! I’m greatly disturbed at how these holy nuns are sometimes vilified (oh, all they do is just pray kinda thing) by those engaged in deeply radical so-called “social justice” activism.

What would we ever do on these boards without Abyssinia connecting us to all this information? An angel in disguise!
