Archbishop of San Francisco under fire

I wonder if it is too early to predict what will happen in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Certainly there will be a period of adjustment when any new bishop assumes leadership. As we know from the situation in Cleveland, sometimes the policies of a new bishop are met with strong and vocal resistance. Given the reputation of Archbishop Cordileone and the reputation of San Francisco, things ahead could be rocky. Of course, reputations are sometimes inaccurate and overly simplified, which makes me cautious about making predictions.

Regardless, please pray for Archbishop Cordileone and for all the Catholics of San Francisco.
The thing is, as others here have observed, his concern is the Roman Catholics of the Archidiocese, not the militant gay atheists (gaytheists?) who frequent the leather bars and sex clubs of America’s most debauched city. Who cares what non-Catholics think about him? And if many or even most of the Catholics in the archdiocese favor gay “marriage” all that proves is that a great deal of re-education is needed. All Catholics who favor gay “marriage” are in grave error and their correction must be prosecuted with the greatest zeal.:knight2:

I’ve driven drunk many of times. I remember one time I had expired license plates, expired drivers license, I was totally drunk, and my back lights on my car were blown out. This all at night after leaving a club. A paddy-wagon threw its sirens on and pulled me over.

The cop said, “Now, we let you run through one red light, but you had to run through a second red light. Where are you in such a rush to get to?”

My friend was in the car with me. He was drunk as well. I replied to the officer, “We are trying to get to this club on the other side of town.”

He ran my license through and when it came back clear for no warrants or anything… he let me go.

But Milwaukee cops drive drunk too. The department has come under fire in local media over a number of cops driving drunk. Like so drunk they crash into snow banks. Or in uniform, at a bar cops hang out at, and after closing caught on tape driving in cars with one or more other drunk cops riding on the windshields and hoods.

But Milwaukee like Boston has a strong drinking culture. Most those baseball fans at tail gate parties are drinking and I have no doubt a sizable portion of them are past the legal blood-alcohol level for driving. Cops squad cars a parked all around but the city government is in bed with the stadium and professional baseball team. Hey, city tax dollars went to constructing the new stadium.

But I remember when two drunken, off-duty, Milwaukee cops went to Chicago, got kicked out of a night club, and then in retaliation shot and killed the bouncer at the door. Then they went on that evening to do a drive-by shooting on the Archbishop of Chicago’s home. Doubt that made national news.

Then another indecent with an off-duty Milwaukee cop visiting Ohio. In a drunken state he shot off his firearm, and had the - Cleveland I believe it was - police on a high speed chase. They finally apprehend him after he existed his car and ran into a river I think.

I was living in California at the time, and I heard about it on the news 🤷

FWIW, here is the New York Times article
Two Milwaukee police officers were arrested in Wisconsin today hours after several shots were fired at the home of Joseph Cardinal Bernardin here. The Chicago police say the gunfire came during a bizarre shooting spree that they believe ended in the slaying of a bouncer at a nightclub.
The Cardinal was not injured.
The Chicago police said the shell casings found at the Cardinal’s home matched casings found at the nightclub, where the bouncer was shot once in the chest by two men shortly before 3 A.M.

Well I stand corrected then, Dale.

But it does not surprise me that article by the New York Times follows the protocols of objective news reporting I learned in a one semester journalism class. It refrains from using tone and diction - or giving irrelevant information (like whether or not the officers support gay marriage, who they vote etc.) to the events or issue at hand - that casts moral judgment or is meant to lead the opinion of the reader.

The news media repeatedly breaks this rule when it reports on the Catholic Church. It also repeatedly broke it when it reported on Jerry Sandusky.

Aside from opinion columns or human interest stories a news article should just report fact and refrain from using certain kinds of language that arouses the emotions of the reader.

For example. In the case of Sandusky it would be sufficient and appropriate to say, “Sandusky is accused of improper sexual contact with a boy.” That kind of thing as opposed to, “Sandusky is accused of more evil.”

But the art of propaganda is this as I learned in school (community college): (1) Oversimplify a complex issue or problem. (2) Focus only on the perceived evils or faults (not goods or admirable accomplishments) of your enemy. (3) Repeat the message and repeat it, repeat it, repeat it, repeat it into infinity if possible.

I actually learned about propaganda in what was essentially an art appreciation class. We watched interviews on film of the former head of the Nazi propaganda machine and the Hollywood head that was tapped by the U.S. Government and military to make counter propaganda films against the Nazis (the U.S. ended up using the Nazis own films against them - but editing them to make the Nazis look robotic and insane).

You might notice the enemies of the Church repeat the same messages over and over again for centuries now (e.g., the Crusades; Inquisition).

Today… you can barely read or hear anything in media about the Catholic Church (the new “Jews” of today) without it bringing up scandal or opposing homosexual marriage. The Catholic Church also opposes the use of landmines in conflicts and wars and supports organized labor but you won’t hear about those things.

So, Catholic Bishops are the “Jews” the secular world loves to hate. They all are money hungry and maniacal or simply immoral hypocrites.

By the way… the Milwaukee Police Department has been rocked for over a year now in scandal. Mainly through the investigative reporting of the Milwaukee Journal. My point is… the MPD has basically surpassed the Milwaukee Archdiocesan is scandal or at least present number of scandals. But this remains local news. Which it should. Just like some obscure Bishop or Archbishop in California drinking and driving (not killing anyone) should remain local news.

The Federal Government is now about to investigate the MPD for Civil Rights violations. Front page news 4 cops of the MPD have charges brought against them.

You have an extremely unfortunate method of expressing yourself
At least my method of self-expression doesn’t contradict the Catholic Church.

In your most recent posts you have attacked the Church for being medieval, encouraged people to mix Catholicism with Hindu practices and incorporate Hindu texts into their lives, and verbally attacked a priest.

Oh, and you said you don’t believe in tongues. Well, the Catholic Church and the Bible both say that speaking in tongues is a legitimate gift of the Holy Spirit.

So, when you accuse others of “having an extremely unfortunate method of expressing themselves” … I’d look in a mirror. Every one of your 4 most recent posts contradicts the Catholic Church and the Catholic faith.

My advice to you would be to consult your Bible and Catechism.

San Francisco’s New Archbishop Worries Gay Catholics

Basically I think that only the heretical gay Catholics have reason to be concerned. Archbishop Cordileone will probably do much to clean up the heresy in that diocese. I at least hope he will and I have confidence that he will.

Obviously the unnamed author is biased. It must be a slow news day for them to print it.

You must understand that San Francisco is unlike anywhere else on earth.
The police don’t enforce state laws on prostitution. Public nudity is legal. Local celebrities include a group of transvestites who dress up as nuns. One of the big annual events is the Bay to Breakers which often includes naked participants. There’s a huge depraved Halloween ball every year that fills up the Cow Palace. There’s a street fair with a gay leather theme. The city council has adopted resolutions condemning the Catholic Church. Local heroes include the hippies. And so on.

Don’t believe me? Check out zombietime.com. But be warned - you will most certainly see some morally offensive images.

San Franciscans are so depraved and confused that they believe they are more enlightened and superior to those who cling to moral values that have existed across both cultures and centuries…
I lived in Northern California and in and around the greater Bay Area for many years and not only can I verify your description, I can say that it is only a modest sampling of the weird and unholy fascinations of some SF residents. However, what is also important is that there is a core of hardworking Catholics there who I think will, as the Archbishop’s tenure proceeds, help him to create a new, orthodox Catholic culture in the midst of the Sodom by the Bay that is San Francisco.

The so-called “Catholic Association for Lesbian and Gay Ministry” refuses to sign an oath supporting church teachings? Fair enough, cut 'em loose, they aren’t Catholic!

Amen. btw I spent some time in Evansville once and there is a world of difference between the good folk of Indytucky (no offense!) and the neo-pagans of the godless Golden Gate!

I was at the installation, in the choir. I was fretful at first when I could hear loud voices outside yelling “We don’t want you!” as the archbishop entered the cathedral. Then the protesters tried to disrupt the ceremony with a loud mariachi band, but that was soon stopped by our wonderful police outside the cathedral. It was rough going for a little while, but a great blessing. As someone said, “we were safe inside”. (but I wonder why it had to be that way in the first place…this is the U.S., can’t we worship in peace?)
Yes, SF is quite a hodgepodge of craziness, but some of us are stuck here for family reasons and other reasons. Now I find I’m at odds with some in my own parish choir who chose not to sing at the installation because the archbishop is ‘conservative’. Meaning? He doesn’t think there should be two grooms or two brides on a wedding cake? 🤷 And the funny thing to me is that many catholics supporting gay marriage are married.
No one seems to make any allowance for the intense theological studying and training our church fathers go through. Someone put it this way, which I agree with: If a surgeon is performing surgery, would you offer your opinion and say which way you think it should be done? I’m entitled to my opinion, but I don’t want to be so proud as to brush aside those who are way more knowlegeable than me. Not to mention he’s been appointed by the Holy Father!
Now there’s going to be a huge emphasis on marriage, which is fine, but it leaves those of us in the single vocation at an even greater loss for guidance from Holy Mother Church. It’s okay, maybe she feels we should not be front and center.😉 Excuse my rambling on and on. I’m happy we have Archbishop Cordileone at the helm. SF needs him.
And as was stated, the Church has many important considerations besides the issue of gay marriage. I wonder what my grandparents would have said about it all.😃

And to think I’ll probably see RosalieM and Faithdancer in January at the Walk for Life and not know who they are. But even if I did, it’s hard to find your friends in that crowd!

There’s a Rosary Rally this Saturday 12 noon U.N. Plaza, Market and 7th:thumbsup:
Last year, which is the first time the event had been held for several decades, the event drew about 2000 people. Since the archdiocese has been promoting the event this year, perhaps more will attend.

Here is some additional information about what will happen
Following the Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral, there will be a mile-long procession to UN Plaza, located by the intersections of Market and Seventh Streets. Once again, the master of ceremonies will be Father Lawrence Goode, pastor of St. Francis of Assisi parish in East Palo Alto. In 2011, Father Goode told CalCatholic “You know, it was Father Peyton who popularized the phrase ‘the family that prays together stays together’….His idea is even more relevant today than it was then. We must pray for the strengthening of family life.” The 2012 keynote speakers will be Father Mark Mary, of EWTN’s “Life on the Rock” and Father Moisés Agudo, thevVicar for Spanish-speaking of the archdiocese of San Francisco.

Archishop’s last name Cordileone means “Heart of a Lion”

And he will need it to be the shepherd here.

I know that John Corapi was busted for DUI himself after he became a priest. If you don’t believe me, go to 22:34 in this video.

Well, BobCatholic, I know that Archbishop Cordileone has been targeted because of his DUI bust.

No, he has been targeted precisely because of his orthodox beliefs. If he were like former Milwaukee Bishop Weakland, nobody would care about his skeletons in his closet.

Same thing for Corapi.

Leftist bishops have their skeletons buried by the diSSenters.
