I was living in California at the time, and I heard about it on the news
FWIW, here is the New York Times article

Well I stand corrected then, Dale.
But it does not surprise me that article by the New York Times follows the protocols of objective news reporting I learned in a one semester journalism class. It refrains from using tone and diction - or giving irrelevant information (like whether or not the officers support gay marriage, who they vote etc.) to the events or issue at hand - that casts moral judgment or is meant to lead the opinion of the reader.
The news media repeatedly breaks this rule when it reports on the Catholic Church. It also repeatedly broke it when it reported on Jerry Sandusky.
Aside from opinion columns or human interest stories a news article should just report fact and refrain from using certain kinds of language that arouses the emotions of the reader.
For example. In the case of Sandusky it would be sufficient and appropriate to say, “Sandusky is accused of improper sexual contact with a boy.” That kind of thing as opposed to, “Sandusky is accused of more evil.”
But the art of propaganda is this as I learned in school (community college): (1) Oversimplify a complex issue or problem. (2) Focus only on the perceived evils or faults (not goods or admirable accomplishments) of your enemy. (3) Repeat the message and repeat it, repeat it, repeat it, repeat it into infinity if possible.
I actually learned about propaganda in what was essentially an art appreciation class. We watched interviews on film of the former head of the Nazi propaganda machine and the Hollywood head that was tapped by the U.S. Government and military to make counter propaganda films against the Nazis (the U.S. ended up using the Nazis own films against them - but editing them to make the Nazis look robotic and insane).
You might notice the enemies of the Church repeat the same messages over and over again for centuries now (e.g., the Crusades; Inquisition).
Today… you can barely read or hear anything in media about the Catholic Church (the new “Jews” of today) without it bringing up scandal or opposing homosexual marriage. The Catholic Church also opposes the use of landmines in conflicts and wars and supports organized labor but you won’t hear about those things.
So, Catholic Bishops are the “Jews” the secular world loves to hate. They all are money hungry and maniacal or simply immoral hypocrites.
By the way… the Milwaukee Police Department has been rocked for over a year now in scandal. Mainly through the investigative reporting of the Milwaukee Journal. My point is… the MPD has basically surpassed the Milwaukee Archdiocesan is scandal or at least present number of scandals. But this remains local news. Which it should. Just like some obscure Bishop or Archbishop in California drinking and driving (not killing anyone) should remain local news.
The Federal Government is now about to investigate the MPD for Civil Rights violations. Front page news 4 cops of the MPD have charges brought against them.
