An interview with newly elected USCCB Prez Timothy Dolan:

ncregister.com/daily-news/archbishop-timothy-dolan-speaks/

Here’s Dolan’s assessment of the current situation in the Church:
“It’s not like — thanks be to God — we’re in crisis. Things are going well.”

Did I hear you say there are no problems? Let me count the ways…
no vocations, radical feminist nuns, 31 Catholic schools closing in your archdiocese, CCHD money scam, their support of abortion, etc., Catholic workers underpaid to the point of poverty, Bad Liturgy left uncorrected, disrespect for the Eucharist, lack of belief in the Eucharist, “pro gay marriage Catholic groups”, Gay Jesuit agenda, disloyalty to the Pope, clerical rebellion, bankrupt dioceses due to scandal payouts, generations lost from the True Faith, etc. etc. Right on, Dolan. All is well. Sleep tight.
Out of respect for the office, a bishop should be addressed as Bishop or Archbishop.

In this case it is Archbishop.

Let’s start with the Archbishop’s outspokenness for the pro-life cause and the new vice president’s work on protecting the family. Fr. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, said on behalf of both the Archbishop’s win, "They have been unequivocal in their defense of the unborn, which for our ministry is the primary focus. They have welcomed and encouraged the work of Priests for Life, and for that we are grateful.”

Any more sources to go with that?

Although it is difficult for a Bishop to outrightly proclaim he is pro-abortion, if his organization (USCCB) funds abortion, what are we to think?

Thank you.👍

Here is a link to an article that was posted to Patrick Madrid’s facebook page.

From the article:
Most pundits and ecclesial commentators strongly predicted Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tucson would be elected to succed Cardinal George on Tuesday, November 16, 2010. In response to what they considered a foregone conclusion, a portion of the Catholic blogosphere was preparing to respond with anything but glowing acclamation. Then, a surprise of the Holy Spirit occurred, demonstrating, once again, who is really in charge of His Church. The gregarious, dynamic, orthodox and beloved Archbishop of New York, Timothy Dolan, was elected to lead the Bishops of the U.S.
Archbishop Timothy Dolan loves the Lord and the Church with an infectious enthusiasm borne of a sincere, living faith. Anyone who has been around him for any period of time experiences the obvious, he is filled with the joy of the Lord. He is also an evangelizer, to the bone. He has quickly become a significant personality on the Catholic Channel of the Sirius Radio Network. He is a man comfortable in his own skin, at ease with the use of the media, filled with the Holy Spirit, and eager to share the Gospel, as it is found in its fullness within the Catholic Church.
This dynamic Bishop began his challenging assignment of leading the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in June of 2002 by proclaiming those wonderful words of the late Venerable John Paul II, the words of the Angel to Our Lady, “Be Not Afraid” when he addressed the faithful. Any observer of the work of Bishops must attest that given the state of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee when he was appointed, Archbishop Dolan demonstrated his full palate of gifts and pastored with the heart of a true shepherd.

Lil: So you want to sing “for he’s a jolly good fellow”. You do not, however, tell me what he has done!

As far as his election goes, that’s the result of campaigning. He wanted the job and succeeded in getting the votes for the job. If Kicanas had won, there would be those saying the Holy Spririt had put him in office. I suspect the Holy Spirit has an ice pack on his head and a large bottle of Advil by his side. And as for me, I still have a blank piece of paper. I have not used any ink. Where is the list?

Also, where are your comments on Saint Francis Xavier?

On another forum, a person from Milwaukee states that Abp. Dolan is personable, nice, and a party-goer, but actually did nothing in terms of tangible results after Weakland.

I’m glad to hear that the Church is flourishing on the planet Zenon. I cannot wait for His Excellency to start cleaning house in the Church in the USA here on planet Earth, however.

A friend of mine emailed me and shed some light on the video, apparently not all is at it seems. I’m not sure if I am allowed to post this in the other thread, but it applies:

"…I saw the original episode on Real Catholic TV where Michael Voris did an expose of the church rededication, which was critical of Archbishop Dolan, even though the archbishop has a long history of being a traditionalist. Subsequent reports indicate that the issue was more complicated than it seemed on the surface. The archbishop certainly knew of the overtly liberal, almost notorious, approach of the Jesuit-run church in question. He is trying to outreach and steer the parish closer to church teaching, while still keeping them within the church. He recently ordered the parish not to participate by name in the gay pride parade, and they obeyed him. The archbishop has a challenge to either kick the parish out of the Catholic Church, or to try to bring them back into the fold. He is apparently trying to bring them back in. We may or may not agree with his methods, but based on the archbishop’s long devotion to the traditions of the Church, I believe we should keep an open mind about how he is exercising his office in this difficult matter. I believe as bishop he is trying to save their souls, and he is first trying to slowly educate and persuade them, but I believe he will remove the Jesuits in question, and place another pastor there, and rebuild the parish after the likely mass exodus, if he has to. Unfortunately, a significant number of the NYC-based Jesuits are on the edge of apostacy, and the archbishop faces a challenge of how best to proceed. …Here are a couple of informative articles, thought neither give the full story.

Oh, whoops, nevermind. They’ve never done or said anything that will help our cause. Sorry!

Edit: On a kinder more charitable note, I would like to cordially ask why you and others have only spoken so negatively about the Archbishop’s election and the conferences themselves. I wouldn’t have added anything to your thread if I hadn’t noticed the “cup half empty” comments. Would you have rather they elected Bishop Kicanas?
My only questions are: (1) Why do we the confernce? (2) Why does it need a President?

It seems at least in some way a setup that can lead to the circumvention of the Vatican and the Pope.

And what do you mean by “clean house”?

It would appear that you think the USCCB has some power that it does not.

The only things that are binding upon all bishop that comes from the USCCB are those items that receive a unanimous vote or receive a two thirds majority vote and is then ratified by the Vatican.

Friend, I gave you an article that I thought was helpful in affirming the Archbishop’s pro-life position. As Fr. Pavone said, that is our “primary focus” and I agree with this. I cannot make you accept the conferences for what they are and I cannot make you like the Archbishop if you choose not to. But I will say please pray for him! He needs fellow Catholics on his side. God knows being the Archbishop of New York has had him constantly under scrutiny and attack.

I was watching this year’s fall conference that they televised and I know they have our best interests at heart. Other countries have conferences as well. It is done not so there will be more dissension but less.

The pope himself has said, [The bishops’ organization is meant to allow for] “the joint and harmonious exercise of certain pastoral functions, for the good of the faithful and of all the citizens of a particular territory.” catholicnewsagency.com/news/pope-bishops-conferences-should-serve-bishops-not-replace-them/

I do not question their motives, not a chance–I love our Bishops. I am simply questioning why the conference exists and why does it need a President? We have the Holy See’ and the Pope, what more do we need?

BTW, the Pope also said:

*However, he alerted, though it must promote “the union of efforts and intentions of the bishops, becoming an instrument for them to share their toil,” it must “avoid placing itself as a parallel or substitute of the ministry of each of the bishops,” or “constitute itself as an intermediary between the bishop and the See of Peter.”

Benedict XVI said it is important to remember that the advisers and structures of the episcopal conference exist for “the service of the bishops, not to substitute them.”

It is a manifestation of the “pastoral solicitude of the bishops,” he said, “whose primary concern must be the salvation of souls.”

“In the faithful exercise of the doctrinal function that corresponds to you, when you come together in your assemblies, dear bishops, you must above all study the most effective means to have the universal magisterium reach opportunely the people entrusted to you,” he said.
I understand the need for the Bishops to gather together under an admistration council. The Church does have civil responsibilities that are pertinent to the local churches. However, the Bishops council seems to be a bit more than that. Please, correct me where I am mistaken.

Zenon here I come! Got my bags packed.

I’m sure we’re about to hear via Abp. Dolan there’s no problem in Ireland either. Seminaries running great. All is well. No crisis - thanks be to God!

The USCCB (the local episcopal conference of the United States) exists because that is what Canon Law calls for! That is also why it has a president. It is incorrect to view it’s existence as a power grab or some attempt to circumvent the pope. The USCCB exists only because the Holy See erected the conference and approved its statutes.

Read Canon Law, people! 😉 😛 😃 (especially canons 447-459)

During the bishops stint in Milwaukee I worked for a parish there. I had the opportunity to meet him several times. He is a good man, quite likable, personable and spiritual. Unfortunately he is a horrible administrator. He avoids conflict at all costs. After 2 years as bishop of Milwaukee the priests were quite upset that he had basically left the same people put in place by Bishop Weakland to remain in their positions, so it was business as usual. We all know Bishop Weakland left things in a mess. The parish I worked in was having some serious leadership problems which should have had Dolan’s attention. He refused to meet with parish representatives to help the parish get back on level ground. People and staff, of which I was one, left the parish. Dolan is good with the public persona but that’s about it.
This is a very informative post. Thank you.

That’s exactly the point, Patrick. The Pope has said that this is not an official group of the Church; it’s not part of the hierarchy. So they have created their own committee, elected their own president, in an attempt to give themselves a power that is not rightfully theirs.
Not quite true. Episcopal conferences were created by the Second Vatican Council in *Christus Dominus *and formally implemented by HH Pope Paul VI in his motu proprio Ecclesiae Sanctae. That the episcopal conferences exist at all is by the legitimate authority of the Holy See.

Also, while Pope Benedict (and Ven. Pope John Paul II, come to that) have clarified what conferences are and are not, what they can and cannot do, neither has seemed to want to dispense with them. The quotes you provide by Pope Benedict do not seem to be an indictment of the idea of episcopal conferences.

All that said, our USCCB has been fairly awful at times. I always enjoy it when an orthodox bishop lights into the conference as a whole, as Bishop Burskewitz (sp?) did over that document Always Our Children, relating to how parents were to deal with their homosexual children. I believe Archbishop Burke and maybe Archbishop Chaput have done so on occasion as well.

Please, calm down. I asked a legitimate question, you responded. I will read those canon law sections. Thank you.

You are not mistaken, Patrick, and I understand your concerns.

But have faith! Let this time of great stress in the Church be an opportunity for our holy bishops to step up and show what they’re made of. I’ve already seen this portrayed in Archbishop Dolan.

You should be ashamed at the way you have been talking about our bishops. It’s one thing to not have much faith in the Church you profess to be a part of, and it’s another to be very vocal about it (i.e. your posts in this thread). I would ask you read canon law - Joe5859 has linked it for us.

Woaaaaah! Someone needs a reality check.
I was actually watching the press conference when those comments where made. He was referring to the situation with Bishop Kicanus not being voted in as president. He was also trying to assure others there was no conflict over the election within the conference. His duties as president were what he was trying to reply to.

National Catholic Register took his answer from a different question (addressed by the New York Post) and added it to his first response to the question, “What would be your chief priorities as president of the conference, in the Church and society?” He was answering a different, (pointed, I might add) question about the election and the USCCB.

**Sorry. I watched the press conference directly and you are mistaken. He was asked what his plans were for the next 3 years as president of the USCCB and he stated that it was nothing more than continuing the work of Cardinal George, that the USCCB, and the US Church were not in crisis, so there were no emergency measures needed. **
