I thought Obama himself made it abundantly clear before November 2008 that he would be the most pro-abortion president in US history. What’s happening now in this administration regarding abortion is no surprise. Fr. Newman was right.

Seems to me that either of the alternatives mentioned above is far preferable to Mr. Obama.
Are they preferable?–of course.
Do they stand a chance of winning?–no.
Are they preferable to other, un-proposed candidates, if they stand no chance of winning?–no.

In fact, they’re a liability to the anti-BHO cause: so now, because Romney wants to fulfill his boyhood dream of becoming President, and Gingrich sees himself as some sort of elder statesman, Obama will be re-elected.

Worse than an over-the-top Democrat abortion-machine would be a Republican who marginalizes the social conservative wing of the GOP and quietly sweeps these issues aside. With the radical abortion-rights character, people will be pressed to react. If a GOP candidate arrives who doesn’t value turning the tide against abortionism, there is a chance that the anti-abortion movement will sink quietly to the background of national politics–forever.

Looking through the top candidates, I can see at least a few that would probably love to do that. Mitt Romney is the first that comes to mind–his take on abortion is decidedly cuius regio, eius religio. Gingrich is another.
Quite honestly WHY do people persist in this theory that Romney and Gingrich are pro-life only as a matter of expediency? Yes they have changed positions but so did Ronald Reagan. I would give anything to have another Reagan in office even though he raised taxes, granted millions of illegals amnesty and upheld a pro abortion bill in California before becoming President. Can we grant that others have had a true and lasting change of heart?

Romney has stated repeatedly that he is pro-life and that he regrets his former stance. I can sympathize coming from a secular background, I had no concept of protecting unborn babies until I saw the light (of the world). Knowing my staunch pro life stance now, I can completely trust that such a change is for real and is lasting.

At any rate the ‘purists’ who are demanding the perfect candidate (sorry Jesus is not on any ballots that I am aware of) are going to get us another four years of Obama. There is not ONE of the Republican candidates, even those I am completely against, who would be worse than another four years of Obama, Pelosi, Karen Sebelius (Tiller the Killer’s favorite governor). Can we quit eating our own and start focusing on the real enemy?

And you base this on??? Look at statistics. No president with ratings as low as Obama has been re-elected. No president has been re-elected with unemployment in excess of 8%. The razzle dazzle that got that Alinsky-ite elected is fading fast. He has lost support of virtually all of his previous identity political groups other than African Americans and the Loons from the Fever Swamp.

That being said, he will be formidable because he plays dirty, is totally corrupt, lies with aplomb and is supported (although no longer universally) by the MSM. He has a lot of money and he doesn’t mind buying votes. So yes he’ll be tough to beat but the stars are aligned in our favor.

Honestly do you think your negativity is helpful in any way? I don’t. We need to be critical of our candidates. We need to ask them the tough questions but could you perhaps look at the positive attributes and quit holding a circular firing squad?

Are you a blood relative all the GOP candidates? If not, I don’t see why you’re taking this so personally. I’m not saying these gentlemen are completely bad people, either–only discussing their viability as Obama-challengers.

Let’s face it: how is Romney going to wriggle his way out of this one? What is he going to say to the legions of potential Obama-criticizers, who are also Occupy Sympathizers or banker-haters? He looks like a stunt double for Patrick Bateman–he’s not going to be terribly successful in courting these elements which are obv decisive in the President’s low ratings.

And Newt Gingrich? That’s going to be real interesting to watch as he tries to enter 21st century politics… What did he do, again?

He wasn’t that great, come on now…

Romney has stated repeatedly that he is pro-life and that he regrets his former stance. I can sympathize coming from a secular background, I had no concept of protecting unborn babies until I saw the light (of the world). Knowing my staunch pro life stance now, I can completely trust that such a change is for real and is lasting.

**Forgive my cynicism, but this just happened to occur when he no longer needed to court an overwhelmingly pro-abortion electorate and began to court an ambiguously anti-abortion electorate.

Its not just this. He has a track record of ‘adjusting’ his “extremely deeply-held convictions” for expediency.**

At any rate the ‘purists’ who are demanding the perfect candidate (sorry Jesus is not on any ballots that I am aware of) are going to get us another four years of Obama.

The irony about what you’re saying is that I’m only asking for a strong/viable/successful candidate without any consideration of ideology or party-loyalty, and you’re completely uninterested in brooking the suggestion that these men might not be the right men for the job.

There is not ONE of the Republican candidates, even those I am completely against, who would be worse than another four years of Obama, Pelosi, Karen Sebelius (Tiller the Killer’s favorite governor). Can we quit eating our own and start focusing on the real enemy?

I disagree. For all his faults, I think Romney would handily defeat Obama. He probably has more difficulty with the Republican nomination than he would in a general election against BHO.

Gingrich, unfortunately, has too much baggage. I think he’d end up being the “gridlock” poster boy.

It’s getting late for an “un-proposed” candidate…

Live Catholic I’m not taking it personally, I just wish you would provide some evidence instead of just repeating your opinions. Everyone’s the world’s greatest expert on their opinions I do grant but in the final analysis you haven’t provided anything but a litany of complaints about a group of capable and intelligent individuals, all of whom would be a huge improvement over Obama. Given Obama’s dismal approval ratings, the lackluster economy, the questions about the Justice Dept aka the Gift that Keeps on Giving, the Green Energy debacle, the rising of Iran, the Arab Spring that looks more like Muslim Bros’ Revenge, why do you think he’s such a shoo-in for re-election? History would say otherwise. Not that I underestimate him mind you but every day I see more evidence that the American people have had enough. They are now HOPING for a CHANGE in 2012.

Just for grins and giggles, how many of the debates have you watched? What are your impressions of the candidates and what are those impressions based on—other than what seem to be some preconceived ideas and talking points about Romney and Gingrich in particular. You just blow off the fact that Newt is an incredible scholar, successful author, think tank enterpreneur, and self made millionaire. He’s quick on his feet, a fabulous debater and would mop the floor with Obama if they went head to head. Romney although born into some wealth is also self made, a successful turnaround artist, understands business, has a squeaky clean family life and business track record. I liked him in 08 and like him better now. I like both of these candidates and would happily vote for either.

Oh and Ronald Reagan was the greatest President of the 20th Century. No contest. So saying ‘he wasn’t that great’ means you are either woefully uninformed or are a lefty plant who’s on CAF just to rile us up. Which is it?

…you haven’t provided anything but a litany of complaints about a group of capable and intelligent individuals, all of whom would be a huge improvement over Obama.

That’s actually not true. I’ve dealt more soberly with the GOP candidates than you have.

Because none of these guys is the right one.

Just for grins and giggles, how many of the debates have you watched? What are your impressions of the candidates and what are those impressions based on—other than what seem to be some preconceived ideas and talking points

This is how someone describes someone else’s thoughts and arguments when they stubbornly refuse to listen to them. Thanks for assuming that I’m totally ignorant, though.

about Romney and Gingrich in particular.

You just blow off the fact that Newt is an incredible scholar,

Hardly. A man who cannot secure tenure at the University of West Georgia cannot be described as an ‘incredible scholar’–sorry.

successful author, think tank enterpreneur, and self made millionaire.

So? Obama is a successful author, AND an accomplished scholar, unlike Gingrich. This didn’t prevent him from becoming a spectacular failure as a president. I’m an accomplished lepidopterist with impeccable conservative credentials, why not elect me, Lisa?

He’s quick on his feet, a fabulous debater and would mop the floor with Obama if they went head to head.

We’ll see.

Romney although born into some wealth is also self made, a successful turnaround artist, understands business, has a squeaky clean family life and business track record.

**He’ll lose for the same reasons that John Kerry lost, except x10. In the contest of Bush v. Kerry, one of the deciding factors was Bush’s populism and folksy character. America just couldn’t get behind the whole obnoxiously-tidy, upper-crust, East Coast Liberal-thing. Mitt Romney brings us a similar presentation, except during a period where everyone’s feeling poorer and more resentful of people who wear suits than ever.

This is completely aside from the documented fact that the man is a phony: he’s a ‘lifelong hunter,’ ‘totally pro-life,’ and completely against Obama’s socialist healthcare–that, to his credit, he pioneered.

Ultimately, ‘blame the bankers’ always wins. Envy will be more motivating in our nation’s decision between two men (Romney and Obama) who would both do everything to improve our economy. The expertise that Romney, as an individual, could bring to the handling of the economy are marginal–the critical details would likely be handled by experts and technocrats, regardless.

Therefore, the ‘business-savvy’ argument comes down to a man who has done something remotely similar to the job he’s applying for, vs. a man who has 3-4years experience actually doing the job. **

I liked him in 08 and like him better now. I like both of these candidates and would happily vote for either.

Geeze, and here you are accusing me of letting my opinions/biases do the arguing for me…

Oh and Ronald Reagan was the greatest President of the 20th Century. No contest. So saying ‘he wasn’t that great’ means you are either woefully uninformed or are a lefty plant who’s on CAF just to rile us up.

THIS, FYI, is an ad hominem. That is, I don’t share your opinion, so therefore I’m either (A) or (B). Also, to remind you, this is Catholic Answers Forum not Conservative Answers Forum. Apparently I didn’t get the memo that slavish devotion to the GOP’s pick was a requirement for membership…

Which is it?

Lisa

I disagree. For all his faults, I think Romney would handily defeat Obama. He probably has more difficulty with the Republican nomination than he would in a general election against BHO.

Romney’s refrain in the last election was business, business, business. Do you really think that same approach is going to hold up this time around?

It’s getting late for an “un-proposed” candidate…

I agree completely, thus my gloomy prediction for the upcoming election.

Live Catholic, again just a lot of opining. Obama is a financially successful author but the two books are not at all scholarly and there is serious question whether he wrote them, or at least one of them. He got into Harvard on affirmative action. That he was editor of the Law Review is reflection of “hey wouldn’t it be cool to have a black guy.” He can be charming but it’s all breaded air.

You said you’ve ‘dealt’ with more candidates than I? All you have done is call them names and disparage them. I have watched or listened to all of the debates and have come to my conclusions from those experiences. Not sure where your opinions arose but needless to day I do not agree with them.

At any rate I think we’ve wasted time and hijacked the thread. When the Republicans win next year I will think of you and smile

Live Catholic, again just a lot of opining.

I haven’t offered very many opinions that are far removed from indisputable fact or simple logic. However, let’s just review some of your own… interesting… opinions:

Obama is a financially successful author but the two books are not at all scholarly …]

**My point in mentioning this, was because you offered that Gingrich was a scholar (Obama is, too, and more distinguished than Gingrich) and had written successful books (Obama has, too, and with more success than Gingrich). Therefore, if scholarship and one’s published repertoire is any indication of presidential fitness–it isn’t, c.f. Obama’s presidency–then Obama far outshines Gingrich as a candidate.

Your reasoning is therefore flawed whether your methodology is valid or not. Sorry.**

…] and there is serious question whether he wrote them, or at least one of them.

According to whom…? Like the concern about his citizenship?

He got into Harvard on affirmative action.

What do you base this on? Technically, its partially true, because he’s an ethnic minority–but, then wouldn’t every woman would be subject to the same criticism?

That he was editor of the Law Review is reflection of “hey wouldn’t it be cool to have a black guy.”

What do you base this on? This is not only uncharitable, its also racist. In any event, affirmative action and racial/ethnic/gender preference only affect the initial selection–'bama received his J.D. magna cum laude at Harvard Law and was selected as president after performing well as editor. Meaning that, given the opportunity, he performed superlatively (another clear indication that performance as a scholar/writer–despite your insinuation to the contrary–does not necessarily improve one’s fitness as president).

You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about, and so you might consider limiting the scope of your insults to just the man in question and not entire ethnic groups who may or may not have benefited from affirmative action.

He can be charming but it’s all breaded air.

True, but still opinion.

You said you’ve ‘dealt’ with more candidates than I?

I said that I’ve dealt with the candidates more soberly than you have. I certainly hope your career doesn’t depend on a close, critical reading of anything.

All you have done is call them names and disparage them.

That’s actually not true, but I suppose if you keep saying it, it might become true… not.

I have watched or listened to all of the debates and have come to my conclusions from those experiences.

So, you judge a candidate’s fitness by what he says on an extremely high-pressure job interview, without considering his resume?

Not sure where your opinions arose but needless to day I do not agree with them.

**Like I have pointed out earlier, not everything I’ve said is opinion and much of it is very considered and well-balanced. At the very least, its coherent and makes sense, which separates it from many statements you’ve made. I know its very popular these days to to call statements you disagree with ‘opinion,’ but do try to expand your tactics or people will assume you’re a ‘one-trick-pony.’ **

At any rate I think we’ve wasted time and hijacked the thread.

Seeing as its your thread, and nobody seemed particularly concerned with the original story, I suppose its yours to hijack.

When the Republicans win next year I will think of you and smile

I invite you to think of me all you’d like.
