Are Atheists “good” people?

This is going from vague to insubstantial. Define what you are asking. Thus far our choices are “good” as in the typical understanding of a person having good character, ethics and morality. In which case the answer is yes. Or this could be refering to a more exact definition where in only God is good which basically answers it self and then leaves us to wonder why ask to begin with? Now you have added an additional topic which is can Atheists receive absolution or reconciliation. Which again depends on what you’re actually asking can they get through the official auspices of the Church? Well, no obviously not since they’d have to stop being atheists to join the Church. If you’re asking can God forgive them? The answer is yes He can do anything He likes and is not bound by the normative path. Or maybe you’re asking if God will give them reconciliation? If so neither I nor anyone here can answer that.

It might help if you actually described what you’re asking. Two seperate topics with multiple correct answers depending on what is intended does not a good conversation make.
Hello rtconstant,

Thank you for an excellent post!

I’ll let you pick the definition and we’ll address that one first, how does that sound?

Although, you may have already answered your own questions to the various definitions here.

Thanks again.

Peace

Hello eucharisteo,

You do make a good point here, however, I believe that the rejection of God is a willful act and no, this was not a “trick question”… just meant to provoke a discussion.

So, now we come to the question of conscience….do mature human beings have a conscience. When we are created by God, are we given a conscience?

If there is a God, which I believe that there is, then all goodness comes from God, including our ability to discern right from wrong; our conscience.

This is what separates us humans from the animals. My point here being, that deep-down inside, everyone, whether they wish to admit it or not, are aware of their Creator-God.

Peace
Let me sidestep out of my attempt to be charitable.

I believe that all men are given an instinctive believe in God. We can nurture it or supress it. Supressing the natural instict of God’s existence is grave to me. But I’m not the creator. So i don’t judge. That’s why I stated earlier that I wouldn’t want to be an atheist on judgement day even if it were no fault of my own. You have to ask the question…“is it really no fault of my own?”

Are Atheists “good” people?

Is possible to be an Atheist, reject God and be a “good” person?

In other words, can one who reject’s God, truly be “nice” or be a “good” person”?

Do people who reject God go to Heaven?

Atheists do not believe in Heaven…do they?

“Good” people go to heaven…. right?

Do Atheist go to Heaven?

Your thoughts?
Atheists can be good people, no doubt about that…
Think about it this way, if an atheist who doesnt know anything about religion or doesnt believe in Christ lives a good life, loves his neighbour as himself ( therefore loving Christ because remember Christ said Whatever you do to the least of my brothers you do unto me) is he/she truly rejecting Christ? I don’t think so…
Put it this way if you truly reject God you wouldnt be a good person…

I am not sure how to answer this one. Yes, an atheist can be honest, helpful, polite, and kind. An atheist can be willing to help the poor, care for those in need, and all that. An atheist can live by a moral code, not lie, not steal, not cheat on his wife. I guess that an atheist can be a good person.

THat does not mean that they all are. They are people and are therefore sinners.

I guess that some will be in heaven, but I doubt that most will.
I agree…well i suppose I am one so I should know.I dont not have a wife because im not out of highschool. I consider myself very moral I refuse to cheat on tests, I have never stolen, I rarely lie (only to some of my relatives because they would hate me for being an atheist) and i have never cheated on my girlfriends

Most of the atheists/agnostics that I have known live by some sort of ethical code. You are not unique in that way. Now, as to where exactly are the lines drawn and why, that varies from person to person

Exactly were not bad people we just have different ideas.

Not a well worded question, in my opinion. I’ve known Atheists that were better people than some Catholics I’ve known. We’re all God’s children, so they are just a little futher lost of a lost sheep than I am.

Hi,

Romans 14:23 But he who has doubts is condemned, if he eats, because he does not act from faith; for whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.

In order to do good and to please God it is necessary to have faith in Him.

I think it is at the same time true though that simply lacking the knowledge of God does not mean that a person is incapable of loving one’s neighbour. But if a person does a good in loving one’s neighbour, it could only be because God has given them the grace to do so. I think that atheists can do good things, and can be moral (but this does not mean that they are). I think therefore that in order for atheists to do the good that they do it must be because God has given them some grace by which they are able. For no person can do good without God’s grace. I think therefore that somehow atheists possess something of the faith necessary to please God even though they do not believe He exists… I’m not sure how this works, but the only alternative conclusion is that atheists never love their neighbour…and that doesn’t seem to fit with reality as far as I can tell…

No one is born with the knowledge that God exists, and it is not written on us that He is there, but it is revealed to us in this world in any number of ways that we may perceive through our reason or know to be true. God is calling all people toward Him, atheists included, and if they reject this call then they sin but if they open themselves to it than they may come to the Truth.

Can atheists go to heaven?

Simply being good in ones works is not enough to merit salvation, we need faith as well, that was why Pelagianism was condemned.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.

The part I would point out here is that idolaters cannot inherit the kingdom of God… if people who turn from honouring the true God and worship idols cannot go to heaven, than I would think that people who turn from the true God and follow human knowledge are in a similar position.

The sin of polytheism and atheism are essentially the same… while they are different in appearance, they both likewise turn from belief in the One True God and believe in something else.

If a Hindu, an African animist, a person in a native american religion, a jain, or whatever other grouping we could add here which believes in something other than the True God can find a way to heaven by God’s mercy than I would think that likewise an atheist could as well. (alternatively though, if an atheist could not go to heaven, than neither could these groups either really)

(I am of the belief though, that no one enters the kingdom but through the Son, and somehow all the people who die in ignorance would need to accept the gospel, either in this life or in some way known to God, just as Abraham did before they enter heaven.)

If a person who believes in more than one god can still seek divine truth, than a person who believes in no god at all should be able to do the same, as it is the same resultant sin of not honouring the True God that they are both doing, either in ignorance or not, but both of them are being called away from their false beliefs and if they resist and refuse to turn away from their idolatries, than as St Paul wrote, they cannot enter the kingdom.

Those are my thoughts at least… If I’m wrong may the Lord correct me, if I’m right may He support me. Amen.

God Bless,

How can you reject something in which you do not believe? You would have to identify and believe in something in order to reject it:nope: :tsktsk:

Well said!

God is a God or surprises and puts all kinds of obstacles and things before us.

We have Protestants to keep up on our toes. We have Athiests to make us reflect and think - scratch and probe.

What a world! Gosh, have I lots of questions for Him when I get to the pearly gates. I aim to get there with his help!

None are good but God as Christ said. The goodness of a man is directly proportional to his relationship with God. Apart from God man is nothing.

Jimmy B!

Those silly questions - aiiii!!!

Athiests are just like any other human being! some good some bad.

It is the Holy Spirit’s job to distribute gifts and our job to pray!

:hmmm: Jimmy if Athiests go to heaven we will find out when we get there.

As for now I don’t know anybody who works at the pearly gates to give me inside information:shrug:

Ciao for now:p

“…The two angels on the right hand and on the left, these are they that write down the sins and the righteousness, the one on the right hand writes down the righteousness, and the one on the left the sins. The angel like the sun, holding the balance in his hand, is the archangel, Dokiel the just weigher, and he weighs the righteousnesses and sins with the righteousness of God. The fiery and pitiless angel, holding the fire in his hand, is the archangel Puruel, who has power over fire, and tries the works of men through fire, and if the fire consume the work of any man, the angel of judgment immediately seizes him, and carries him away to the place of sinners, a most bitter place of punishment. But if the fire approves the work of anyone, and does not seize upon it, that man is justified, and the angel of righteousness takes him and carries him up to be saved in the lot of the just. And thus, most righteous Abraham, all things in all men are tried by fire and the balance…”

well first off this is what god’s people goes through. its so simple that its scary. now moving on,
Humans Can Not Judge! simply put. the only one that can judge the human soul is what the human soul allows to be the judge of them for where they want to go. hell, heaven, summer land, nirvana, for some where they were from (anotherworld). i will not respond to arguments of what exist and doesnt. so moving again,
if the human’s soul (the atheist) is to be judged to go to heaven, like all others will be judge in such of way as posted on top of this message. it is not for other humans to pity or prejudge the atheist for that is a sin on its own.

I will go a step further, I have known someone who is agnostic, and what I found out was that , the person was in the general sense of the word ‘Good’, but lacked a clearly defined sense of guilt because he lacked a moral authority to back up his misbehaviours atimes. I guess it transcends to the spiritual because if someone rejects all forms of spiritual guidance from Jesus/or the holy spirit, then I really dont know if the mind can soley replace Jesus. I feel, It will be quite rare to meet a very good Atheist person , its only if they were very principled, which there is a lacking of such people (atheist or non-atheist) , nowadays. I also agree with the fact that I always sensed that the person was confused and had resigned himself to the fact that the world came with problems and lived with the philosophy of ‘hey just get on with it’ since he didnt beleive in prayer.

I think this is sort of a trick question.
Not even tricky , I call the (thread) question hypocrite !!
A stupid question when expecting a yes or no answer.
I absolutely agree !!

I even read insults to atheistic & other thinking people !!
What gives you the right to be better ,
actually , call yourself a better human being ?!?!?!?
I rarely lie (only to some of my relatives because they would hate me for being an atheist)
There is nothing to be ashamed about to be an atheist !!
For me it’s very simple: Take it or leave it !!
If they can’t/will not accept ??
Simple , that’s their problem !!

I have a couple of priests & missionaries in my family ,
well , they know , so be it !!

Salute & Cheers from a NON BELIEVER:

Someone once said that when you say “He is a good person,” you’ve actually said the absolute LEAST you can say about him.

After all, we are all well-meaning, usually nice, pet hamsters, kiss babies, and the like–we are almost all “good people” in some sense.
