Are Nudists Bad?

Dear Fr.
I am a Catholic who really enjoys the freedom that nudism give to me. I have gone to nudist resorts in the past and wondered if this is wrong. There is nothing at all sexual about my enjoyment of nudism and I do it simply for relaxation. Is it wrong to go to nudist resorts or beaches? If it is wrong can I continue to practice nudism in private? Thanks alot for your help.

Frankly I think you are both being slightly dishonest and also placing yourself (and others) in grave spiritual danger - for the obvious reasons.

NO, public nudism is not licit.

What you do in your own home is another matter, so long as it does not involve causing scandal or an occasion of sin to others (children, neighbors, the postman, etc.). If you want to walk around without clothes on in your house, that is your business (I think it is ridicuous for any protracted length of time, but I digress).

By the way… I am not sure how one “practices” nudism, as in getting good at it. I should think everyone has equal … qualifications for that - at least in one respect (though not in others, but I digress…).

I find your stereotyping interesting, a trifling annoying… and not at all odd.

It is the usual Puritan response to anything deemed “impure” – BAD, UGLY, PERVERTED, etc. We are all “misfits”, “perverts”, “crazy”, etc. for not minding at all going to a nude resort. Not that there’s anything objectively sinful (although there always have been and always will be those who go just for a show) about it. It just makes you extremely uncomfortable, the very notion of… LETTING EVERYONE SEE YOUR “Fat Ugly Grotesque” Body the way it is.
Oh I forgot… Church is where you all go on Sundays to COMPARE CLOTHES. (And some of you go there to try to find members of the opposite sex instead of the real reason you go to Church – to glorify God.) Nope - you all would rather find fault and go on finding fault, with the way others look and talk and act and behave and believe. Makes yourselves feel better I imagine.
If I were crazy, as some of you seem to believe, I would wander butt naked into my child’s school, or into another area where it is totally inappropriate. The fact that I limit my going naked to an area designated for that purpose should tell you I’m not as I’m respecting your wishes not to have to see me! And as for whether or not it’s sinful – GOD IS MY ONLY JUDGE!

God is the only judge of your soul, but I have no problem judging your actions. “Nudism” is not virtuous.
 
Of course the body is a beautiful thing, but one reason that it is beautiful is that it is intended to one day be part of the gift to your marriage partner and noone else.Our bodies were designed by God to show our complete love to our spouse and when you openly expose your body you are destroying the purness of the gift of your body. Also keep in mind that satan CLOUDS our minds to believe what is wrong is truth. So dig deep down into the depths of you and allow god to tell you what is the truth and not people. So in case none of that made sense to you, No i dont think nudist are right in what they do. God bless

Yes, even to the extent they feel called to spread the Gospel in the bluff–a real compeling witness I’m sure (you know, being transparent for Jesus). See this from the FAQ’s page:

I would laugh at the absurdity of it all, but I see some actually think such behavior may lead to holiness? What a state we are in today.

What is next? Swinging as a means to spread the good news?

You can also do all sorts of recreational activities while clothed with clothed people. It seems to me the main attraction then of the nudist resort is you can be around other naked people. What benefit do you get from hanging out (really bad pun, sorry) with a bunch of naked people?

LOL, yes I would like to have the perspective of a nudist on what is attractive about this hobby… 🙂
 
Not bad nessarily, but weird, definitely…

IF God had wanted us to be nudist, He would have made us naked… oh, He did, didn’t HE ???..

No, I am not pro-nudist. The last thing I want is to be, is running around naked, that is part of my worst nightmares. Being exposed is downright embarassing !

Americans as a culture are pretty hung up on the sex thing. We are either one extreme or the other. Europeans are a little less high strung about it. I don’t think either one is better or worse than the other.

Being nude in the shower is about as exposed as I care to be. I seriously doubt anyone would want to see me naked, heck , most times I don’t even want to see myself naked. 🙂 … take off a few pounds, a little exercise, a few lifts and tucks here and there nawww, forget it…

Some folks just should not be seen naked period…it’s just plain gross !! Other folks are just too much of a distraction to be seen naked, they are too much of a temptation for the opposite sex (and nowadays for the same sex).

In other words, keep your clothes on folks, either you will gross someone out or you will be too much of a temptation. Either way it’s bad.

I think it is a cultural thing.

Over here in Northern and Central Europe everybody goes to the sauna naked, it is nothing somebody thinks about.
You see people naked in the showers in the public swimming pools, in the sauna and spas, no big deal.

OK, a nudist camp is something else, i agree, but finally you can bring it to the point “to the pure everything is pure, but to the unpure everything is unpure” (don’t know if this is the correct translation, but i think you can see my point)

Personally, I think beautiful nudists should leave their clothes off, and conversely, I think ugly nudist should leave their clothes on 🙂

There should be a law against ugly people running around nude -anywhere.

Do these saunas and spas have both sexes naked together? That might not be a good thing. I mean, when its all one sex it’s not a big deal. I mean, anyone who’s ever been on a sports team or taken gym class has had to shower with a bunch of other naked people of the same sex. In that case, no one is tempting anyone (unless there’s a homosexual in there) so it’s fine.

But then again, it might be a case of “as go the pagans, so goes Europe …”
