Are Nudists Bad?

Modesty is not just about what clothes one wears or about sexual matters. It’s a much broader virtue that encompasses things like the way one prays in public and other things that are not related to sex.

I went one time to a nude beach, that doesn’t make me a nudist.

I went on a lark, with another woman. Black’s Beach, near San Diego, is not easy to get to. You have to climb down a steep, rocky trail. There weren’t a lot of people there, but one friendly guy did sit and talk to us. He was most likely not gay. It was a normal conversation. He and I played frisbee, if I recall. There were very few people there.

There were a couple of guys a ways in front of us. They were probably gay. I found out later that a lot of gay men go there. They didn’t do anything inappropriate. The only weird moment was when 3 fully clothed Mexican guys walked by, obviously gawking. But, they just walked by, speaking Spanish, and kept going. I figured, if you’re naked in public, you can’t complain, eh?

A nudist is someone very interested in nudism, likes to do it a lot, maybe joins a nudist colony, etc. It’s a major hobby and lifestyle, not a one time experience of going to a nude beach.

Anyways, I don’t quite get the fun of it, it seems silly to me.

Interesting. Thanks.

I’ll admit, I’m kinda curious how it would feel to walk naked on a beach and swim among the waves. It sounds like it would be sort of liberating or relaxing. But I’d be too self-conscious if other people were around, with clothes or without. If only I had my own private island! (sigh)

Sorry. I can’t find it. Where is it? There’s so many branches on this thread.
Dear Fr.
I am a Catholic who really enjoys the freedom that nudism give to me. I have gone to nudist resorts in the past and wondered if this is wrong. There is nothing at all sexual about my enjoyment of nudism and I do it simply for relaxation. Is it wrong to go to nudist resorts or beaches? If it is wrong can I continue to practice nudism in private? Thanks alot for your help.

Frankly I think you are both being slightly dishonest and also placing yourself (and others) in grave spiritual danger - for the obvious reasons.

NO, public nudism is not licit.

What you do in your own home is another matter, so long as it does not involve causing scandal or an occasion of sin to others (children, neighbors, the postman, etc.). If you want to walk around without clothes on in your house, that is your business (I think it is ridicuous for any protracted length of time, but I digress).

Fr. Z

By the way… I am not sure how one “practices” nudism, as in getting good at it. I should think everyone has equal … qualifications for that - at least in one respect (though not in others, but I digress…).

Tuop,
Explain more about modesty and prayer.
I think a lot of what the charismatics do would be an example of immodesty in public prayer. It’s contradictory to how Mary prayed, treasuring everything in her heart as opposed to waving your hands in the air, screaming, immoderate dancing, etc. A lot of what they do seems “showy” to me 🙂

Er, a bit off topic, IMO.

…and how about those elevating, acstatic and bi-location mystics!

I guess that answers that. I tell others that they should humbly submit to the wisdom of the Church, regardless of their limited understanding. I guess I should follow my own advice. So much for thoughts about running naked in the white sandy beach of my private Caribbean island.

Ugh. I guess entertaining such thoughts is just as sinful. Well it’s too late for me to go to confession. It’ll just have to wait 'til tomorrow.

So, I checked out some photos of nudists, guys. There was a link on one of the Christian nudists sites to some photos. They are just a bunch of naked folks, having fun at a vacation spot by the beach. It’s an Australian site, I think.

The people are mostly in good shape in the photos. I’d provide a link, but I suspect that management here might disapprove… 😃

The people all look like they’re having good, clean fun, except for the fact that they are stark naked. There is a lot of variety among both the men and women, if you know what I mean. :o

You can sign up and get access to a lot more photos of wholesome looking naked people. It’s definately not pornography, but these folks must have some sort of weird facination with nudity. It appears pretty harmless, though.

Bi-location is not relevant.

They didn’t seek to do those things in public. Sometimes it would happen in public, but it’s not something that they sought. Saintly mystics would always try to hide those experiences. For example St Francis of Assisi once waited until everyone was asleep – or so he thought – until he prayed in his room. But someone was awake and saw his mystical prayer.

The charismatics unfortunately don’t follow this example of St Francis of Assisi.

“Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?”

I know that I would feel sinful if I ever went to a nudist beach.

I think the body is a beautiful thing, and God meant it to be shared with our spouse and not with the rest of the world!
