I posted a thread, called “What do Protestants think of the Theology of the Body?”
I know Pope John Paul II’s Theology of Body involves the theology behind human sexuality.

There was only 2 Protestants (who is considering converting to Catholicism) who responded.

Are Protestants too afraid to discuss the morality issue with Catholics especially if it deals with human sexuality?

Are you implying that Protestants are afraid of sex?:bigyikes:

Nah…just never read it myself.

Looking at the wiki on it, it looks like the only debatable component of it might be contraception. I personally don’t debate contraception because I have mixed opinions on it (tainted by negative experience) and for all I know Catholicism might be absolutely correct on this one.

Besides it is much more fun to argue (past each other) meaningless (in themselves) slogans like “Sola Fide” and “Sola Scriptura”.

I don’t think they are afraid. You just aren’t meeting up on this site with “Protestants” who have read the book.

Dr. James Dobson apparently had Christopher West as a guest at a Focus on the Family retreat, so his group of people is obviously not afraid to TOTB. And in many evangelical circles, when Dobson says it’s OK, it’s OK!

My suggestion is to visit “The Marriage Bed,” a Christian website about sex. It’s a really good site. I don’t think it has an anti-Catholic bias, because I’ve been reading it as a Cathoilc. It’s about Christians and sex. Here’s the link:

Relevant Radio has got a priest I believe that puts his “theology of the body” glasses on and uses just about everything and anything in relation to this concept. When the Chicago White Sox won the World Series, he used that team and the Cubs I believe in relation to theology of the body.

For me, never took time to read any of this. Is this a book or a teaching course?

Thanks.

"Theology of the Body’ Is that some new doctrine made up by Pope JP?

No, the pope is not allowed to make “new doctrine”. It is simply a very deep and thorough examination of the doctrines that have existed since Jesus handed the faith to the Apostles.

Hi,
Is it a book about converting to the CC? Or is it a book about Godly sexual humanity? Or is it both?

Is it a book just about sexual morality? I would have my daughter read it but someone said that it takes alot of studying to understand it.😦

It is a book about human sexuality from a Catholic perspective (go figure, it was written by a pope…). It was written with Catholics as the primary target audience I’m sure, so it doesn’t deal with conversion of non-Catholics.

I have never read it, but Pope JP2 had a tendency to talk in a spiral so I’m sure it would take a bit of effort to follow and grasp.

I just quickly browsed this site but it does appear to contradict the Church on some things. I have a problem with non-Catholic sites like these because I have to wonder - under what authority is this person able to speak, telling me what is okay and not okay in God’s eyes?

As for Dr. Dobson, I like him, but we still need to be careful. A friend of mine gave me a book he wrote for pre-teens and in it he says the bible is silent on masturbation so we all need to make up our own minds.

Just another reason Catholics need to rely on solidly Catholic materials for guidance.

Like John Martignoni says, serious protestants don’t care what the pope or the catechism says, they care what the bible says.

If I were a Protestant, and a particular teaching is not explicitly in the bible, and its in the catechism and/or its what the pope says, I would avoid it like the plague.

I’m not afraid to discuss John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. I haven’t read it, and am simply not interested in John Paul’s view of human sexuality.

Some Catholics quote Theology of the Body as if it were equal to scripture. Maybe for Catholics it is equal to scripture; however, for many of us who are not Catholic, John Paul’s views have no authority or relevance.

Again, for the sake of the non-Catholics, I wish to repeat that Dr. Dobson invited Christopher West to a Focus on the Family retreat to present “Theology of the Body.”

The theology of the Body is totally Biblical, or Dr. Dobson would NEVER have invited this man to come and give a “Catholic” talk to an evangelical group, would he?

I urge people who are not Catholic to at least give the Christopher West book a read. After all, Dobson likes it! So it must be OK!

John Paul II"s “Theology of the Body” is an in-depth analysis of the Book of Genesis and God’s intention, revealed through scripture, of man’s sexual purpose. John Paul painstakingly tackles scripture line-by-line, word-by-word.

It contains nothing contradictory to scripture. Rather, it re-affirms the beauty of sexuality as revealed in the Sacrament of Marriage.

“Theology of the Body” is perhaps the most comprehensive analysis of sexual purpose ever composed by a theologian. JPII’s insight contains no new revelation or doctrine.

It is a hard read for those not willing to take it slowly and in pieces. That’s why Christopher West did his best by breaking it down into more understandable terms. He is by far, the foremost mind to tackle the text.

JPII’s work has the potential to unwrap centuries of misguided, maligned and twisted preconceptions about the purpose of human sexuality and help to restore it to it’s original purpose, it’s original beauty.

Just as John Paul II began his pontificate with the words “Be Not Afraid” - I urge all not to fear his masterpiece. Start with Christopher West’s “Theology of the Body for Beginners” - Catholics, Protestants, Jews - all followers and lovers of Genesis.

I will never again look at human sexuality in the same way after studying this great work. “Theology of the Body” is incredible.

Maybe you should read it then at least you’d have a clue what we’re talking about. Who knows you might learn something. Look for one of Christopher West’s books on the subject.
