Are the souls in Hell friends with eachother?

Did you listen to the talk by Fr. Ripperger? He explained very clearly why it is that the souls in Hell would not be friends. They hate each other. They hate themselves. They can’t even control their own emotions and actions. They constantly flail about, ripping at their own flesh and that of those around them. There is no love, no respite, no respect, no compassion. There is nothing but hate, fury, and agony.

Um, what? No, St. Thomas Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor, is not wrong. What basis do you have for your opinion?
I am talking about purgatory. Similar to Hell in terms of it being a painful place, but nowhere near as terrible.

I do wonder what his basis/authority is for everything that happens in hell (i.e the damned being incontinent(even though they no longer eat?!) and the devils mocking/tortuing the damned and forcing them to do evil/disgusting things.

I buy it all, but is this talk just a revelation from various saints?

Further quesiton. Do the demons find any utility/ purpose for the damned aside from getting their kicks from torturing them? Do the damned play a role in tempting/harming humanity, or are they just the demons eternal chew toy?

Oh, sorry, I completely missed that part. My apologies. 🙂

There is a great volume of theology which has been developed by the Church in these matters, through the writings of many Saints and Doctors of the Church. This is the source of what Fr. Ripperger talks about.

Sometimes he’ll also share opinions of his on some topics, and in these cases he always makes it clear that what he is saying is just his opinion.

Utility? I don’t think so, but I’m not sure. I think it’s mostly an outlet for their fury and hatred, but unleashing their fury and hatred on others doesn’t reduce their own suffering in the least.

I’m not sure on this either. I’ve heard some isolated stories of people suffering possession by the souls of very, very evil humans in Hell, but I don’t know much on the topic.

Just?

You think “selfish self-exclusion from God” is trivial?

Lewis had a very powerful, serious view of hell. Look at Screwtape Letters, where the demons devour each other (and the damned). Look at the scenes of damnation in That Hideous Strength and The Last Battle. For that matter, look at The Great Divorce.

Why is this Fr. Rippergar such an authority?
Screwtape Letters is a must read if someone hasn’t. I love the writings of CS Lewis.

Mary.

Lucky you, you were snatched from the clutches of satan.

The more I think about it the rarer death bed conversions are. It is a painful process to realize that you have wronged God and other people for years and to realize you are in need of salvation.

The longer you are steeped in sin the harder and less appealling repentence becomes.

I do wonder what purgatory is like in terms of pain? Maybe for a different topic but I think that even if there is great pain of sense, there is great joy and compassion there as well. I beleive the souls in purgatory are friends with eachother and will the good of those on earth.

I am certain Thomas Aquinas had it wrong when he said that the demons torture the souls in purgatory. I would think they would be out of reach there.

If there is sadness ( there is no hatred or spite) there is sadness at having been wrong for so long, and the one thing to make you happy is out of reach…for now
I just learned of this recently. St Faustina gave us Divine Mercy Chaplet and Divine Mercy Sunday through Jesus. Jesus was visiting with her. St Faustina did a tour of Heaven, Purgatory and Hell in a couple of her sessions .

St Faustina said the souls were there in Purgatory to be purified for Heaven. So the fire is a purifying one. The more we pray for them, as part of the Communion of Saints, the more it helps a soul along this journey.
Hell was quite a terrifying visit for St Faustina.

All I can say is make good use of the mercy of Jesus on Divine Mercy Sunday. Take a friend!

The Catholic Church teaches the souls in Purgatory are part of The Communion of Saints, as are we on earth, and the Saints in Heaven. And the Angels.

According to St Faustina, no demons in Purgatory. The Blessed Virgin is known as Star of the Sea there, and visits Purgatory to give out refreshment. Afterall, the Blessed Virgin Mary is also part of the Communion of Saints with us, and the Purgatorians.

Right.

In that post I had misunderstood the poster and thought he was talking about Hell.

After spending decades ignoring God, here I am in my first Lenten Season, and thanks to God, my whole being has changed. Repent and be saved!

So this has created, as you can imagine, confusion, concern, and cautiousness in my yet to be repented and saved cohort.

They watch and listen very closely to everything I say. If a swear word or cuss slips out, I get ’ well that’s not Christian’. Which causes me a lot of internal joy. They must surely be thinking now ’ what is a Christian’

One guy had absolutely no idea what Good Friday and Easter Sunday are about. 😲 And he went to Sunday School as a kid.

All I have to say is you lose, devil. Game over.
You are aware, of course, that the “game is not over” until the stone goes over your head?
