Are we all the "offspring" of Mary? How do Protestants interpret this verse?

We are told that there will not be any ark of the covenant.
This verse is speaking of the physical Ark. We don’t believe that Mary was a walking box…

“It shall be in those days when you are multiplied and increased in the land,” declares the LORD, "they will no longer say, ‘The ark of the covenant of the LORD.’ And it will not come to mind, nor will they remember it, nor will they miss it, nor will it be made again.
(Jeremiah 3:16 NASB)

Please read my post again and tell me. Is it all coincidence? There is NO coincidence in Scripture. It’s all purposeful.

Grace and peace.

I was evangelical Protestant all my life before converting to Catholicism in 2004.

Our interpretation of the verse was that the “woman” refers to Israel. We are spiritual descendants of Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel, by virtue of our adoption into the Kingdom of God through Jesus Christ.

So it would be correct to refer to us as “offspring of Israel.”
That’s how i interpret the passage.

Singingbeauty, the wedding feast does truly count. (John 2: 1-5) does not state that someone did or did not approach Virgin Mary, but then again, how was Virgin Mary aware that they had run out of wine,
the only logical explanation
Wow, the big blue letters are a little much. I don’t need you to talk loudly at me…

As for what I quoted above, you are not serious are you? Couldn’t Mary be somewhere nearby when they found the jars of wine to be empty… seems to me that she could have overheard the servants telling someone there was no more good wine or she could have been nearby when they discovered it was gone. There is more than one explanation than they went to her specifically. Assumptions are never good… Especially when you can’t back it up.
First of all, did not Jesus Christ say

MARK 9: 23 And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes.”
Singingbeauty What part of “ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBE TO HIM THAT BELIEVES” You don’t believe. lol

So if I believe hard enough that I can burn someone with a look or that I can be more powerful that God it can happen??? No, you and I both know that isn’t true.

The passage you quoted wasn’t one that would sustain the argument you are making. The ‘If you can?’ comment was one Jesus made to the man who doubted Christ’s ability not his own. If we believe Christ can do it, it is possible. I believe I can go to Christ about anything and He will answer. I still do not see the point in going to anyone else.
Singingbeauty, When Elias was taken immediately that second Elias was in heaven and Elisues saw it, and from heaven Elias, grants Eliseus, what he asked for. Elias was raptured and when one is raptured one is immediately in heaven
He talked to him BEFORE he went up to heaven, not after. The request that he had made was granted when he saw that Elias was taken. No words exchanged between him and Elias after Elias was taken. Still doesn’t support your argument…
Singingbeauty, Yes, Abraham was in heaven and heard the Rich Man in Hell. Now listen closely, if a person is in hell and can pray/reach out to Abraham from hell. How much more can WE here on earth reach out/pray to Abraham and any Saint in heaven. Please do not believe that the people in hell have more grace to reach out to the saints of heaven than the Christians here on earth. The Devil would love for you to believe this, this is why he is after the offsprings of the Childeren of Virgin Mary REV:12
First I don’t believe that Grace given from God pertains to us being able or not being able to talk to people who have passed on. The Grace give from God is between Him and us, not us and others who have passed on.

Second, I am not Mary’s offspring any more than I am my step-mother’s offspring. It is a very weird dynamic that has been built with Mary and christians all over. One that still has the jury out for me on this topic.

One question that I have that has never been answered satisfactorally to me is:

Why go to anyone BUT God when we have the ability to go to Him directly? Why go to Mary if I know and believe that through Christ ALL things are possible. To go to anyone else to have to intercede for me with Him is to say that He won’t answer my prayer or request if I go to Him directly.

Could I pray for you? Certainly but I believe that praying for eachother is more for our benefit with eachother to feel the community than it makes a difference with God…

Wow, the big blue letters are a little much. I don’t need you to talk loudly at me…

Hi singingbeauty,

No, I am not yelling at you, I love the Color blue and I love big bold letters If they offer it here then I am going to use it, again I am not yelling at you.

But here’s the point. Can you now deny that the Woman in Rev 12 is Mary? If you admit that it is Mary, then that changes everything. She was protected from falling so that can indirectly imply that she was sinless (Rev 12:13-14). She had a crown of 12 stars (12 tribes of Israel) so that can represent her queenship over the new Israel which started with the 12 Apostles. In Rev 12:1, she seems to have a body, so that can imply that she was raised bodily. It also talks about her offspring (the ones that keep the Word of God) so that can imply that she is still our Mother (Rev 12:17).
I admitted it was Mary in my first response to the OP, I believe. I have no problem calling Mary “mother” in this sense.
Don’t you remember how scripture portrays the Ark to be spotless? I remember reading something about someone touching the Ark and dieing. How much more spotless (sinless) would the Mother of God be?
I personally think other arguments for Mary’s sinlessness are more convincing, though this is an interesting observation.
This is not something the Catholic Church made up in modern days. Here are a couple of Early Church Fathers that taught this:
Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 296–373) was the main defender of the deity of Christ against the second-century heretics. He wrote: “O noble Virgin, truly you are greater than any other greatness. For who is your equal in greatness, O dwelling place of God the Word? **To whom among all creatures shall I compare you, O Virgin? You are greater than them all **O [Ark of the] Covenant, clothed with purity instead of gold! You are the ark in which is found the golden vessel containing the true manna, that is, the flesh in which divinity resides” (Homily of the Papyrus of Turin).
Yeah, only one problem with this: the manna (Jesus Christ) is not residing in Mary presently. Of course, not all types match exactly, so I wouldn’t reject this parallel on that basis, but you can clearly see that the manna resided in the ark semi-permanently (for all we know it’s still there in some cave), but Jesus only resided in Mary for 9 months.
Gregory the Wonder Worker (c. 213–c. 270) wrote: “Let us chant the melody that has been taught us by the inspired harp of David, and say, ‘Arise, O Lord, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy sanctuary.’ **For the Holy Virgin *is ***in truth an ark, wrought with gold both within and without, that has received the whole treasury of the sanctuary” (Homily on the Annunciation to the Holy Virgin Mary).

Ok, this is something I have heard before but it is confusing. The story you quote is Abraham in Heaven and the rich man in hell… Correct? Not Abraham here on earth in our time demension. It is not the same as someone here on earth praying to Mary. We are separated by far more than a great chasm (reference the story) as Heaven and Hell are said to be in that story.
Ufamtobie is 100% wrong. In this PARABLE all of them were in Hades, which has several parts. Since Jesus had not yet ascended to heaven, it is not appropriate to say that Abraham and Lazarus were there.
The story doesn’t prove communication from earth to Heaven, it only proves communication from Heaven to Hell.
Now, if you can show me somewhere - definitive proof where someone here on earth (besides Christ because we can all agree He has abilities that we can only dream of) called on someone, other than God, in Heaven and they answered. Or even show me where those on earth in the Bible prayed to Mary or even went to her for intercession with her Son. The wedding in Cana doesn’t count, they did not go to Mary for her to tell her Son (if they did show me where it says that) all it says is that Mary noticed they were out of wine and she told Him, then she told the servants who would have been working on where they would get more wine to do whatever Christ told them.
The evidence of people going straight to Christ is insurmountable whereas the evidence to go to His Mother or anyone else - not so much…
So, where in the Bible did any of the disciples pray to Mary or anyone who had passed on to Heaven?
This has always been a point of confusion for me so I look forward to your answer… 😊

Ckempston,

Ckempston is 100% wrong!

Since the coming of Our Lord, “the Bosom of Abraham” gradually ceased to designate a place of imperfect happiness, and it has become synonymous with Heaven itself. In their writings the **Fathers of the Church **mean by that expression sometimes the abode of the righteous dead before they were admitted to the Beatific Vision after the death of the Saviour, sometimes Heaven, into which the just of the New Law are immediately introduced upon their demise. When in her liturgy the Church solemnly prays that the angels may carry the soul of one of her departed children to “Abraham’s Bosom”, she employs the expression to designate Heaven and its endless bliss in company with the faithful of both Testaments, and in particular with Abraham, the father of them all. This passage of the expression “the Bosom of Abraham” from an imperfect and limited sense to one higher and fuller is a most natural one, and is in full harmony with the general character of the New Testament dispensation as a complement and fulfilment of the Old Testament revelation. …(New Advent.org)

I’ll one-up you and quote the Creator of the Universe, who I’ll believe over an author of some article on NewAdvent any day:

John 3:13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.

Thank you. Please try again.

You don’t even know you’re own teachings ufamtobie. The RCC never claims Abraham’s bosom to be Heaven. The RCC teaches that there are 2 levels of Hades. Hell itself and Abraham’s bosom. Re-read the catechism and learn something instead of making stuff up.

Ckempston, Since we are talking about the Gospel of John, I’ll one-up 7X 70X and qoute JESUS CHRIST who is God and King of the universe OUR SAVIOR whom we must believe eat and drink who I believe litterally, over the new age 15th century Protestantism beliefs any day:

Ckempston, Why do I believe and take it Litterally that I must eat and drink our Lords Body and Blood? Because there is so, so much at stake/such as my soul, my salvation not to! Jesus Christ Solemnly Assures it. I thank the Lord for giving me the Grace to believe it! Amen

Ckempston, read the bible verse below, if you don’t feel that your soul is worth much, then there should be no fear of you not taking it litterally! But I advise you to think it again, and again if you have to, ask for the Grace to believe, for what part of “I SOLEMNLY ASSURE YOU” you don’t understand!

John 6: 53-56) Thereupon Jesus said to them:/ckempston “Let me Solemnly Assure YOU, if you do not EAT the FLESH of the Son of MAN and DRINK his BLOOD, you have NO LIFE IN YOU. He who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has LIFE ETERNAL, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is REAL FOOD and my blood REAL DRINK. The man who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood Remains In Me, and I in him. Just as the Father who has life sent me and I have life because of the Father, so the man who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestos who ate and died nonetheless, the man who feeds on this bread shall live for ever.”

Ckemspton, therefore (John 1:53-58) is of more importantance than (John 3:13) because here Jesus Christ SOLEMNLY ASSURES US that we must literally Eat and Drink His Body and Blood the Only means to our salvation. Believing In Jesus Christ is it enough? No! we must do the WILL And COMMAND of Jesus Christ in order to be saved and that is, again to Literally eat and Drink His Body and Blood. Even the devil believes in Jesus Christ, but the devil does not eat and drink believing in the Body and Blood of Christ, therfore the Devil does not do the Will of Christ, nor can he ever do the will of Christ, but Ckempston, you still can do the Will and Command of Christ by Literally believing and Eating and drinking His body and blood, I am sure you don’t want to be like those Jews who Quarreled amongst themselves saying: “HOW CAN HE GIVE US HIS FLESH TO EAT”

The Eucharist is the Body Blood Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ! And if you refuse to believe, you Ckempston are no better than the Jews in (John 1: 52) At this the Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "HOW CAN HE GIVE US HIS FLESH TO EAT?

Ckempston, gettin back to your question above. TRUE (John 3:13) "No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came down from heaven the Son of Man. So I tell you, you will not get any argument with me regarding John 3:13 Thank you so plese try again.

I only said that the Bossom of Abraham was liken to heaven " the bossom of Abraham which is synonymous with heaven itself"

Ckempston, do you know what I mean by the word “Synonymous” Do you know the definition? Let me show you in words: Ok, the Poor man Lazarus now enjoying Comfort/Joy/Hope/Love/etc…No one can argue the fact that these feelings above is synonymous to Heaven? Ok, now about the Rich Man, now Tormented/Thirsty/no comfort/no Joy/no Hope/ no Comfort/no Love/etc… No one can argue the fact that these feelings are synonymous to Hell?

Ckempston, where would you rather be, in the bossom of Abraham, which is synonymous with Heaven, or, in the suffering torments of the Rich man, which is synonymous with Hell itself?

Stop kidding yourself. You were wrong. Just admit it and stop deflecting.
Ckempston, where would you rather be, in the bossom of Abraham, which is synonymous with Heaven, or, in the suffering torments of the Rich man, which is synonymous with Hell itself?
Doesn’t matter where I’d rather be, because I’m going to neither of them.

Stop deflecting from the fact that you don’t even know your own church’s teaching on this. The Bosom of Abraham is not synonymous with heaven.

And the best you’ve got it is that “one scriptures is more important than another?” Give me a break. Your whole post is internally inconsistent and contradictory to common sense and the Scriptures, not to mention your own church’s teaching.

Peter didn’t understand it either. He simply believed it, as do I. You’re barking up the wrong tree here.

Ckemston, you are not making sense here what do you mean Peter did not understand, understand what? What are you reffering to?
Stop kidding yourself. You were wrong. Just admit it and stop deflecting.
Ckempston, providing you know the definition of “Synonymous”. Tell me Which to you sounds more synonymous to Heaven, Being at Abraham’s bossom, where the poor man was, or where the Richman suffering and wanting water to quench his tongue? Come on tell me, which of the two sounds more synonymous to heaven? I REST MY CASE!
And the best you’ve got it is that “one scriptures is more important than another?” Give me a break. Your whole post is internally inconsistent and contradictory to common sense and the Scriptures, not to mention your own church’s teaching.

Ckempston, I am not deflecting, And regarding one scripture is more immportant than another you believe this too. How So? well regarding (John 6: 53,54) You my friend take these verses very lightly, to a point where you become a Jew and argue (John 6: 52) HOW CAN HE GIVE US HIS FLESH TO EAT.

Ckempston, if you do believe that we must eat and drink the Lords Body and Blood, how or where do you go and partake of of the Body and Blood of Christ?

Hello NDFan,

Would you please post the parts of the Catechism that you are referring to?

I like the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). I don’t believe that there exist many writings, outside of Holy Scripture that are more important or more perfectly worded than those found in the Catechism.

Then again, the Catechism of the Catholic Church is based entirely on Christian Traditions, important, early Christian writings from the Doctors and Fathers of the Church and from the Bible.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, all points to Holy Scripture and to Jesus Christ!

I believe that this would be a much better world, if more people read, understood and followed the Christian instructions found in the Catechism. I also believe that if more non-Catholic, Protestant Christians actually read the Catechism that many, would be surprised to how much in there, they really agree with.

I think I’ll start a thread on the CCC.

NDFan, **would you please post the parts of the Catechism that you are referring to? **

If you want to talk about the Catechism, then let’s talk about the Catechism. However, please don’t try to use a Catholic book, the Catechism ,or try to use the Catholic book, the Bible to try to disprove any aspect of Catholicism, to do so is just ridicules! :banghead:

Context and sources are everything, if one is to understand Christian truths.

Moreover, there can exist only one Christian truth. That would mean that those “Christians” who disagree with the Catechism, or with the teachings of the Catholic Church, on the issues of Faith and Morals, they preach false beliefs and are lying to themselves and to others.

Any “Christian” belief thoat are apposed to those Christian truths found in Catholicism are lies and things people made up,.

Wouldn’t you agree that there can only be one Christian truth ?

Thank you.

Yeah and how is it that you get Mary from all of this when Scripture never once mentions her name anywhere past the book of Acts?

Cas64, you mention above that Virgin Mary’s name does not pass the Book of Acts. WRONG!!! Virgin Mary name passes the Book of Acts when Virgin Mary filled with the Holy Spirit says below:

(Luke 1: 48) Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid;** for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed**.

Cas64, If you still don’t understand, If Virgin Mary said “that all generation will call her blessed.” that means that Here name goes far beyond Acts, and into our very own lives.

Cas64, It is a shame that your hate for the Catholic Church is putting you against The Holy Spirit and Virgin Mary’s words above

Cas64, how many times in your life have you called Virgin Mary Blessed? Besides Christmass, Easter, if that!

Cas64, tell me how does it feel that you have been proved WRONG not by me but by the Holy Spirit and Virgin Mary herself… Shame on you Cas64

This was a very uncharitable reply. Is this typical of someone who knows their Bible?

I think what ufamtobie was saying is that since, “all generations” would call her blessed that her name would not stop with Acts… Since all generations would call her blessed.

What would it prove that Mary is not mentioned past Acts anyways? 🤷 This itself is even debatable (Rev. 12)

Of course Luke is before Acts. why do you have to lie and say that I said Luke was after Acts. Point to where I said Luke was after Acts?

Cas64, If you can put your hate aside for the Church and your dis-respect for the Blessed Mother Virgin Mary, for a minute or two, you will be able to learn that Virgin Mary’s name may have not been mentioned after Acts, However, (now here comes the Learning Part)
(Luke 1: 48) Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

Cas64, what part of “ALL GENERATION SHALL CALL ME BLESSED” Don’t you understand?

Cas64, what does the bible verse above (Luke 1: 48) say to your heart? Again, here is Virgin Mary filled with the Holy Spirit saying: “All generation will call me blessed” This means that Virgin Mary’s name will carry on until the End of the World, far beyond Acts and we will also hear the Name of MARY in Heaven, and if one don’t hear the Name of Mary after this life time, then that one must be in hell.

Cas64, you yet have not told me how does it feel to be corrected by (Luke 1:48) And you still have not told me if you call Mary “blessed” or are you part of a Generation who disrespect (Luke 1: 48)?

I am part of that GENERATION that Calls MARY BLESSED, the question is are you part of that generation, if not then you should be worried.

Yeah and how is it that you get Mary from all of this when Scripture never once mentions her name anywhere past the book of Acts?
Look, Catholics honor Mary as the Mother of Men, our mother. She conceived her Son by her own free consent. And by that consent she accepted Christ whole and entire, not only the physical Christ, but also the mystical Christ. And we are members of Christ, as St. Paul says, part of the mystical Christ. So we, too, were accepted by Mary, at the moment of the Incarnation, as her children, spiritual brothers of her Son. Her consent and acceptance of us was ratified, in the full realization of its burdens, at the foot of the cross, when she united her personal sorrow with the sufferings of her Son for our redemption. We owe Jesus to Mary; and so, indirectly, we owe the grace of the cross to her. This grace makes us children of God. So she is, indeed the spiritual Mother of all men.

It proves much my friend. Jesus’ name doesn’t stop does it?
