I guess I don’t see it.Maybe I just don’t want to do justice to the accusation

Hmmm. Let me try another way of explaining what I mean. Ever see the Lord of the Rings movie, the first part?

Recall that scene (in the movie) where the Ring Wraiths stab the beds of the hobbits at the Inn, the Prancing Pony?Hmmm, I am listening.
God bless
So we are attempted cannibals then.Recall that scene (in the movie) where the Ring Wraiths stab the beds of the hobbits at the Inn, the Prancing Pony?
Just pillows there under the blankets, the Ring Wraiths were mistaken of course.
But, were they murderers?
In other words, attempted murder – the actual murder prevented by a mistake – is morally equivalent to murder.

Well!!! It’s about time!!!This is a 2000 year old question?
Read John Chapter 6!
“As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.” Jn 6:66.
After Jesus tells His followers 2000 years ago that they must eat His flesh and drink His blood many of His disciples leave Him. (666?)
They also totally misunderstood, this is the only place in Holy Scripture where any disciples leave Jesus!
"Then the Jews began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 "For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” Jn 6:52-56
It is Truly His Flesh and His Blood, but it is not ordinary human flesh, it is Life, it is God, therefore it is not cannibalism.

Just like protestants today who can’t wrap their mind around the Eucharist, many of Jesus’ disciples left Him at that point.60** Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”** 61*** But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, “Do you take offense at this?** 62* Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where he was before? 63* It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64* But there are some of you that do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. 65* And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” 66 After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him. 67 Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” 68* Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
OK, I liked this reply. I just recently came across someone calling Catholics cannibals, and though he was told while it is in the form of bread and wine, it is actually His body and blood, he said, ok, you can’t contradict yourself, it has to be one or the other. You saying God can be in any form refutes that…for some reason, I wouldn’t have known what to say. I guess the conclusion is that it doesn’t matter what form He’s in; if He says it’s Him, it is!Is Jesus God? If yes, then is His “body and blood” restricted to human DNA? If he was ONLY a human you could argue His body and blood must be human cells, but since He is NOT ONLY human but also God, His body and blood can be of any substance He chooses can’t it? If Jesus had said this tree is my body and grape juice is my blood I’d be chewing on a toothpick and drinking Welches. Actually hasn’t God shown His physical presence in various forms? Let’s see, He appeared as a bush, towers of smoke and fire, a dove, a lamb, human… So anything God says is His body can be can’t it. So thinking that His body and blood must contain human DNA is not correct. He said the bread was His body, He said the wine was His blood. I have enough faith to believe He is truly physically present, body, blood, soul, and divinity in His consecrated Eucharist.
P.S. welcome to the forum
Quick search on cannibalism is that this is the eating of human flesh by a human or humans. In a more general scope this is under the term “anthropophagy”, under which includes the Eucharist = “the ceremonial eating of Jesus’s body as wine and bread”.if we eat and drink the body and blood of jesus christ does that make Catholics cannibals?
John 6:31
Our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
John 6:49
Your fathers did eat manna in the desert, and are dead.
God had already given us (people of the Judaic tradition) Manna to eat that kept only the body alive. Christ has become for us a form/type of Manna which enlivens the soul to the point where even death is not an obstacle.John 6
54 Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.
55 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.
56 For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed.
57 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him.
58 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me.
59 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He that eateth this bread, shall live for ever.
This is interesting. You are saying no, but you explanation suggests that your answer should be yes.No. But lets take the claim at what it is. If we are truly cannibals (in the way that those who make this claim are thinking) then that means that we must be truly eating the body, blood, soul and divinity of the lord. If it is just a symbol and the bread remains mere bread, we cannot be cannibals.
You can’t have it both ways. Either you must deny the real presence, and therefore cannot claim that we are cannibals, or if someone claims that we are cannibals then that person must affirm the real presence of the lord. You can’t deny the real presence, state that Christ is not present in the Eucharist, and then go onto claim that Catholics are cannibals.
God bless
From the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB):“If we are truly cannibals (in the way that those who make this claim are thinking) then that means that we must be truly eating the body, blood, soul and divinity of the lord.”
Does the bread cease to be bread and the wine cease to be wine?
Isn’t this what you are saying is cannibalism?Yes. In order for the whole Christ to be present—body, blood, soul, and divinity—the bread and wine cannot remain, but must give way so that his glorified Body and Blood may be present. Thus in the Eucharist the bread ceases to be bread in substance, and becomes the Body of Christ, while the wine ceases to be wine in substance, and becomes the Blood of Christ. As St. Thomas Aquinas observed, Christ is not quoted as saying, “This bread is my body,” but “This is my body” (Summa Theologiae, III q. 78, a. 5).
For the sake of arugument, let’s say catholics are in fact cannibals. Where does the NT forbid drinking and eating the blood and body of people?if we eat and drink the body and blood of jesus christ does that make Catholics cannibals?
No…but that was one of the accusations of the pagans towards the early Christians…if we eat and drink the body and blood of jesus christ does that make Catholics cannibals?
Wow good distinction. I guess cannibals didn’t want their food to fight back. But as stated before this is one of the things early Christians were accused of when they were persecuted so this should make a protestant think why was this the case. I also think the early Christians then were put to death because they would not deny that they were eating the body of their Lord nor would they deny they were drinking His Blood.I thought cannibals eat the flesh of dead persons. We consume the Living Christ, a Divine (not human) Person, with both a Human and Divine Nature.
Really?Wow good distinction. I guess cannibals didn’t want their food to fight back. [SIGN1]SELECTIVE QUOTATION FAIL[/SIGN1]Justin thoroughly denied the claim that Christians were eating actual flesh in his apologies.
My highlight but you noticed he said Human flesh (in otherwords any old human) and I said the flesh of our Lord. I think this comment of mine is right because our Lord told us to eat His flesh and drink His blood and this is what we do. I think I will do what the Lord told us to do and not pick and chose part of what an ECF was saying unless you read all what he wrote to understand the whole picture.Really?
“For what sensual or intemperate man, or who that counts it good to feast on human flesh, could welcome death that he might be deprived of his enjoyments, and would not rather continue always the present life, and attempt to escape the observation of the rulers; and much less would he denounce himself when the consequence would be death? This also the wicked demons have now caused to be done by evil men. For having put some to death on account of the accusations falsely brought against us, they also dragged to the torture our domestics, either children or weak women, and by dreadful torments forced them to admit those fabulous actions which they themselves openly perpetrate; about which we are the less concerned, because none of these actions are really ours, and we have the unbegotten and ineffable God as witness both of our thoughts and deeds.” (2nd Apology, Chapter 12)

The accusation against the early Christians to which Justin Martyr is alluding is that they ate each other. My highlight but you noticed he said Human flesh (in otherwords any old human) and I said the flesh of our Lord. Where? He thoroughly affirms that it is Christ’s flesh and blood in his First Apology, Chapter 66.Really?

And this food is called among us Εὐχαριστία [the Eucharist], of which no one is allowed to partake but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as Christ has enjoined. For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.
