I’ll go wiith the Bishops 🙂

Its not just Catholics against this, its other faiths and people of conscience.

How stupid they are. One can be liberal and a devotedly sincere Catholic, just as one can be a conservative and a devotedly sincere Catholic. 😦
It depends by what you mean by ‘liberal.’ Liberal positions like pro gay ‘marriage,’ and pro abortion are not compatible with Catholicism.

Anybody surprised by this?

I say, let yell and holler and carry on all they want to.
I honestly do not see a spontaneous “Atheist Uprising” happening any time soon in this country.
God and Christ are going about their business unafraid.

Change beliefs-----yeah, right…

And they dare to say atheism is not a religion?

Really? From this angle they don’t look any different from any other religious fanatic - except the god they worship is themselves.
This is offensive. Unbelief takes many forms. Self-love is not a characteristic of all or most unbelievers. neither are most of us fanatics. Please do not generalise about us.

Sorry but this particular group of atheists are religious fanatics and I paint all fanatics with the same brush absolutely.

I understand not all unbelievers are like that. 🤷

Atheists should just live their own lives, if somebody else is religious how does it effect you?
This is what happens in many parts of the world. It is different in countries where religion is strong, such as the US or Saudi Arabia, and where religion is established, such as in the UK. Then religion does tend to intrude on the lives of unbelievers, asking us to pray, to acknowledge god(s) in oaths, to pay taxes for religious education (in the UK or Saudi Arabia), or to support religious chaplaincies etc. I think people should be free to live their own lives, religious or not, and while I enjoy discussing belief, there is no benefit to me if someone becomes an unbeliever.

It’s more subtle than that. The subtext is that “liberal and nominal” Catholics (whatever that means) are more enlightened than “conservative” Catholics. The tactic is probably based on partly on negative observations made on websites such as this slamming liberal and “cafeteria” Catholics and partly on Catholic groups who disagree with Church teachings and style themselves liberal.

I can’t decide if this is funny or not. In any case American Catholics will not be able to ignore the issue for much longer. They will have to decide where they stand when it comes to their beliefs and living their faith. That is a good thing.
I agree with you, even though it might tear the church apart. It is the bishops who will not be able to ignore the issue for much longer. Will they continue along their political path or begin instructing the faithful as they are called to do? Given the decreasing numbers of obedient Catholics, the Church is certainly not united and even the clergy admit the HHS mandate is shaping up to be a liberal vs conservative thing. I have yet to hear one word from our pastor or bishop reiterating church teaching on contraceptives. Without this basic catechesis, no nominal Catholic is going to have a conversion of heart. So you’re right - decide whether your politics or your faith is most important to you.

Some are not. You might note that some conservative positions, particularly those regarding laissez-faire capitalism, are also not compatible with Catholicism.

Since i am not in the USA I get my info from this forum and a number of blogs. It seems to me that bishops are starting to take a stand, that this situation and attack on religious freedom is uniting them. Something similar is happening in the UK with the ‘gay marriage’ movement. The church is finally standing up to the govrnment and advocating marriage. Of course, there are so many people who don’t really care because they are lukewarm, cultural catholics. But even they cannot ignore what is happening and cannot claim to be ignorant about these things. The church being clear on its teachings and not being afraid to discuss them will reach them with its message. People will thus have to take a side. I don’t think that strenght is necessarily in the numbers, so if the church consists of those who are faithful that is a good thing.

How can you be devoted and also be liberal? The value systems are opposed…

I agree. As for not hearing about the teaching on contraceptives, I think it’s still early on. I think I read somewhere that the bishops will be giving more instruction to the pastors, etc as time goes on (maybe it was a letter from Cardinal Dolan?).

I do think we will begin to hear more about the teachings of the Church in relation to contraceptives. It is so importnat to make it clear that this is doctrine…it can not change. It is a matter of faith amd morals…and it is grave matter. It is unbeleiveable how much ignorance is out there (and I don’t mean to use that word uncharitably). I think much of this is the Church’s fault. The teachings should have been preached about/taught a long time ago. I was at a meeting this past week amongst fellow parishioners and one person thought that the Pope is only infallible wrt faith, not morals…that morals is up to the individual. Um, what?

I argue you can’t be either and be a sincere Catholic, if you mean “liberal” and “conservative” in the sense commonly used in America today.

You cannot be a rah-rah America, untrammeled capitalism, preemptive war, kill-everyone-I-don’t-like “conservative” and a sincere Catholic. You cannot be an authority-hating, traditional-morality-smashing, “My body! My choice!” liberal and a sincere Catholic. When faced with the choice between modern political attitudes and Catholicism, you must mutilate the one to accommodate the other.

That said, it is far more difficult to be both a sincere modern liberal and a Catholic, insofar as the liberal must abandon many more of his beliefs in order to become a Catholic than must a conservative. You simply cannot believe the vast majority of what liberals believe and remain a Catholic in good standing with the Church. You can, at best, be a Catholic who opportunistically emphasizes his common ground with the leftist zeitgeist, while quietly playing down his own opposition to contraception and ontological errors like gay “marriage” and “divorce.”

The best evidence for this is the fact that the vast majority of liberals have recognized it and are now capitalizing on it! And, of course, the fact that many, many Catholic liberals have apostasized, formally or in practice.

Atheists Step Up ‘It’s Time to Quit the Catholic Church’ Campaign
Getting impatient are we? They’re already winning via indoctrination in the schools the media, and the culture at large. But evil is never satisfied; these folks always want it right now. That’s often their undoing although I doubt that will be the case in this instance.

Reminds me of how Obama had to dress down his supporters about getting single payer healthcare passed immediately without a gradual two step plan.

aaahhhh! But they haven’t reached their final goal yet, which, you see, is to completely destroy the Catholic Church. (Blinded by Satan, they actually think they have a chance at doing this!)

I agree. Extremism in either direction is incompatible with Catholicism.

Would it be in poor taste to start a campaign that says

“Sorry to see you go. We’ll still be here if you change your mind”?
