I was speaking to a police officer in our small town. He told me that, even here, we have a shortage of officers. Asheville’s shortage is significant.Honestly, I’m not surprised. I think a lot of officers are reconsidering their location and career.
There is some truth to this. The greatness of the American experiment is the understanding that authority must exist, but it gets its power by consent of the governed and it is limited to that Which has been consented to.Amen. People also often don’t think authority exists… Because I said so, that’s why | Zippy Catholic
From the link: Power is a material capacity to make this thing happen rather than that .
Authority is a moral capacity to oblige a subject to choose this thing rather than that .
Enforcement is a power associated with an authority, specifically to punish those who disobey authority and extract restitution from them.
Tyranny is a false pretense of authority, frequently accompanied by enforcement of the false claim.
A basic problem with modern people is that they don’t believe in authority: they don’t believe that other men can oblige them to do or not do particular things independent of consent to the obligation.
This kind of talk doesn’t surprise me anymore. The cops don’t like the fact that people are trying to stand up to them. Frankly I hope that they all walk out over this. If it were up to me I would investigate the past of each one that complained.
I think they don’t like the fact that they very people (Progressive mayors and politicians) responsible for the culture that allows for misconduct by a small few are unwilling to defend and stand by the honorable overwhelming majority of law enforcement officers. The cops don’t like the fact that people are trying to stand up to them.
Because all are guilty of the sins of a few?Frankly I hope that they all walk out over this.
“We’ve looked into your activities, Comrade.”If it were up to me I would investigate the past of each one that complained.
Guilt by association is as old as mankind. It’s far easier than taking the time to think rationally.Because all are guilty of the sins of a few?
Is it really a matter of cops don’t like that people are trying to stand up to them? Broad brush much? The cops don’t like the fact that people are trying to stand up to them. Frankly I hope that they all walk out over this. If it were up to me I would investigate the past of each one that complained.
People aren’t thinking rationally. You can expect to be attacked if you try to insert reason into this mess.JonNC:![]()

It will also prove to be expensive. Getting into law enforcement is now a danger on two fronts. Fewer people will see it worth the risk. Fewer people means higher wages. Get ready for the corresponding tax increase.I suspect it is nationwide.
Destroying important institutions based on the heinous acts of a few is counterproductive
So protesting is grounds for investigating people’s background? If it were up to me I would investigate the past of each one that complained.
Yes, I wouldn’t blame individual policemen for this. The violence we see from the cops is integral to capitalist law enforcement. Capital will always require a surplus population to exist that will be subject to higher crime rates and restlessness, and the purpose of the police is partly to subjugate this group. There can be no real abolition of police while capital exists, despite what those calling for “police defunding” say.I think they don’t like the fact that they very people (Progressive mayors and politicians) responsible for the culture that allows for misconduct by a small few are unwilling to defend and stand by the honorable overwhelming majority of law enforcement officers.
The police force isn’t just an assortment of individuals. There are no individual “bad cops”, but an institution that is integral to capitalist order and therefore has to rely on violence. At best it’s a tool of repression and an agency for churning out convictions and arrests without much regard for human decency. The cops involved in the killing of Brooks were just doing their best to get an arrest, and that’s a big reason why things turned so sour.Because all are guilty of the sins of a few?
@StudentMI The problems with the police force aren’t a product of the bad behaviour of individuals, but integral to the police force and the function it serves. I will say that all the cops I have ever personally known have been awful people, but I would assume that some mathematically have to be okay. Still, that hardly matters when assessing an institution like the police force.Guilt by association is as old as mankind.
Let’s compare it to communist law enforcement. Want to?Yes, I wouldn’t blame individual policemen for this. The violence we see from the cops is integral to capitalist law enforcement.
Communism, on the other hand, abolishes freedom, rights, and the lives of civilians who merely disagree. There can be no real abolition of police while capital exists, despite what those calling for “police defunding” say.
This assumes that the mistrust is based on actual misdeeds as opposed to perceived ones. As regards the police, the perception in no way reflects the reality. When an entire community (blacks) do not trust the police as a group, then there is a problem with the group that needs to be addressed.
Oh, I see. So we do have guilt by association. The police force isn’t just an assortment of individuals. There are no individual “bad cops”, but an institution that is integral to capitalist order and therefore has to rely on violence.
Again, you’re describing socialism in all its forms. Except that communists don’t even both with convictions. No reason for the inconvenience of courts and trials. At best it’s a tool of repression and an agency for churning out convictions and arrests without much regard for human decency.
The cops in the Brooks case spent the better part of a half hour trying to make sure they made a legitimate arrest. So, without evidence, this is slander against them on this part. While every police officer I know says they even acted properly in shooting him, I disagree. I think the cop lost control. There isn’t even any evidence yet that race played apart. The cops involved in the killing of Brooks were just doing their best to get an arrest, and that’s a big reason why things turned so sour.
Depending on the pronoun “that” (the police or the community) there are two possible meanings to that sentence. Also, if the logic holds that a few bad apples in the police “doesn’t hold”, then neither would it hold for a few bad apples in “an entire community (blacks).” Logical consistency is a useful filter. When an entire community (blacks) do not trust the police as a group, then there is a problem with the group that needs to be addressed.
