You seem to like to use modern scripture scholarship of the more liberal variety. Great! Let’s apply it to the quran! Perhaps with the analysis that Muhammed didn’t actually write all the material and what he did write was influenced by his own experiences with Nestorian Christians. Oh excuse me, he didn’t write it. He recited it. We have no real copy till the Uthman redaction where he tried to get rid of all the variant copies. Parts of some however survived. We haven’t even got the satanic verses or differences in the sunni and shiite qurans. Isn’t this fun? And of course it shows how the quran was the product of a long compilation process. We simply cannot know what parts even came from Muhammed, assuming he even existed. I suggest we have a Muhammed Seminar where we can vote on which suras we feel are actually from Muhammed. I bet there are only a few. I am sure that you don’t object to this kind of quranic study. Right? Although I am sure that my head would be seperated from my shoulders if I said all this at a Muslim university.
In the beginning we Christians didn’t kill apostates. Even the Jews gave it up. Although at the time they objected to the human sacrifice elements of the surrounding religions. In Muhammeds time he tried to justify executions by the Torah. The Rabbi tried to cover it. He knew that Jews no longer did this and that it was “abrogated” (you’ve heard of that). Muhammed, bloodthirsty as he was, would have none of it. He wanted to be able to kill people and nothing was going to stop him. So instead of learning the context and from the current practice of the Jews he ignored all of it.
We consider the killing of apostates to be an abberation. Muslims consider it the will of Allah. You still do it today. You know this. SO, instead of arguing ancient history, let’s talk about why Muslims insist on killing people who convert to Christianity. Why do they so enjoy killing people who decided they want to be Christians? Please share with us why you feel the need to commit these heinous acts? Speaking of human sacrifice…there’s a thought…maybe these murders are really some sort of Islamic human sacrifice to appease Allah. Interesting thought.
