Owning. Slaves. Is. Wrong.
Owning people is wrong yes. But having servants is fine
Slavery is the fault of those who do it, Augustine in particular as he not only did it but preached the “moral” way to do it.
And he also did this:

We can balance out bad acts with good?

Wow. Defending slavery. Stay classy, CAF. This thread won’t last long after that.

I understand your broader point… but 30 years ago? Really? In 1988 I’m pretty sure most of the developed West condemned hitting a child with a ruler / yardstick.

I’m just saying he also did good and was not the enemies of slaves. The quote that started this argument may be fake for all I know. The other quote states slavery is not given to us by God but by the fall so I actually have to see the majority of his writings to conclude what we are debating even holds any value 😬

He. Condoned. Beating. Slaves.

I was trying to p(name removed by moderator)oint the age of the stories my parents told me about on how they were disciplined. It is way older than 30 years

He. Condoned. Beating. Slaves.
and you are going to show me the manuscript to show that he in fact said that? For all I know we could have been deceived. Let me check to see if this quote we have been arguing is true or not

I’d still like to hear the argument for why St. Augustine was wrong. Outrage isn’t an argument.

Looks like it happened.

You do realize it’s still legal in a number of states for schools to beat kids’ butts with a board, right? Happens on a real regular basis in Texas.

This does not speak about whipping at all. Rather it speaks about punishing sons and slaves which should not be condemned because punishing someone is acceptable. Slavery is not acceptable anymore, but what I just read seems to show that Augustine is not cruel to slaves and treats them as human

It is wrong to beat slaves. Or own slaves.
