Ave Maria at the White House

Frankly, when I posted this news, I actually expected some hate. The fact that the hate is coming from fellow Catholics is sad.
I agree. You should consider responding to those who have expressed it.
Would you support Muslim prayers coming from the White House? Conservatives would just about melt.
I reject the idea that singing the Ave Maria constitutes prayer. Perhaps if there was a piece of Moslem music that was similarly inspired masses of people would find it equally appealing. Alas…

It’s not even the specific piece. It’s the waft of a con. The veneer, the facade of moral righteousness by the endorsement of the Holy Mother of God. Many of us have a deep revulsion of the Holy Mother being used this way.

Jesus established his church, the one true Catholic and Apostolic church and taught us how to pray “The Our Father”. Fifteen hundred years later the Protestants broke away and stole “our” prayer. Maybe we should sue them for copyright infringement.(said with tongue in cheek so no one misunderstands)

Ave Maria is sung beautifully from the steps of the White House and broadcast to the world. And some American Catholics are indignant.
Some cite the constitution and the separation of church and state as a source of their discomfort. Others raise the copyright issues, or the cultural and religious appropriation of what they consider to be a catholic composition.
The best comes from those who openly condemn those who participated and organized this event, questioning their motives. “How dare they sing this song!” - they seem to be saying.

Ave Maria, mater Dei
Ora pro nobis peccatoribus

There is no accounting for what people choose to be offended by. In your opinion which is worse: that the RNC played the Ave Maria or that the DNC supports abortion on demand throughout the nine months of pregnancy? How about a sense of proportion here?

I disagree they should leave religion out if it I doubt a Trump has ever uttered a prayer unless they had to or for public showing they are not religious people. He tried to brand himself with the bible he want you to remember him holding the bible that was what the photo shoot was about - he didn’t know what to do with it any christian would of held it up with two hands and would at least read a passage from it - not Trump he just wanted to be pictured with it - people remember these things.
I don’t like him using it when he is not really a Christian it dirties it.

God works in mysterious ways. He will use the stone that has been rejected.

Fiat voluntas tua ,

sicut in caelo, et in terra .

How is it you know for sure he is not a Christian. My understanding is he came from a Presbyterian background, baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian rite at First Presbyterian Church in Queens and then he and his family while he was growing up attended a Reformed Church with the pastor being Norman Vincent Peale.

I will agree he is not Catholic, though Melania was raised Catholic. She and the president were married in an Episcopal Church, where she carried her family rosary during the ceremony.

We can say he, along with ourselves, has done things that are not Christian but it is not our place to read someone’s heart and say he can’t hold that Bible he is not a Christian. God alone reads people’s hearts.

He may have even been holding up the Bible his mother gave him.

We can say he is not Catholic and so has not come into the fullness of faith as of yet but we need to pray he continues that faith journey and for their salvation he comes into the Catholic Church and Melania makes a complete return, if she hasn’t already.

The DNC has explicitly expunged any reference to God or religion from their platform, but by all means, let’s get exercised about the RNC because they haven’t…and everyone knows they’re not real Christians. Still, there is this:

…we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.’ But Jesus said, ‘Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterwards to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. (Mk 9:38-40)

Agree.Joe. Biden and Nancy Pelosi, dirty their Catholic faith with their politics.

“Ave Maria” is in Fantasia, “Ave Maria” is mainstream. This shouldn’t be a big deal. What’s next? Saying this alienates Protestants?

It would have been fine had a JB used this song,it’s just because it was Trump.Talk about focusing on minutae !

From over the Pond:
So they chose Schubert’s Ave Maria. My favourite setting for this prayer. It is not seen in the secular mainstream as a ‘Catholic Hymn’, more of a traditional/Wedding/operatic type song. IMHO it means little, other than to those who understand its meaning. Ease up America…you may be reading too much into this.

I’m not one to be trapped by the two party dichotomy and until Trump is gone I’d rather support a third party.

I’m not one to be trapped by the two party dichotomy…
Whatever we might prefer, the unassailable fact of the matter is that this is a two party race: either Biden or Trump will be elected. You may not be happy with that, but voting third party won’t change anything. If you think they are equally bad and it makes no difference to you which is elected then voting third party, or not voting at all, might be reasonable. It’s hard to believe that, as different as they are, you would find them equally awful.
…and until Trump is gone I’d rather support a third party.
That’s fine, but oppose him for valid reasons
