…After all, you will face having children leave; them, their own funeral…
“Oh, yes. You, too. Enjoy today, this part of your life will go by so fast.”

That is pretty close to an “ouch”!

I have had people tell me to enjoy my children. I never thought it was offensive. I don’t think anyone has told me that while they were in naughty mode.

During naughty mode I’ve gotten, “You have your hands full”

I normally would answer, “Yes I do”

Agreed.

One rule I have always held to is this, however: Whatever answer you give to anyone, remember that the chances are that only your children will ever remember what you said.

That is the primary reason I don’t like “these days go by so fast.” What is a child supposed to think about that? That they’re not expected to be anyone whose society their parents will cherish when they get older?

If I had any retort to make to “these days go by so fast,” then, the message of it would be this:* Oh, no. I cannot wait to see what sort of men these boys become. They only get to be even more enjoyable the older they get.* Mine are twins, and we used to get “Double Trouble!” all the time. My standard reply was: Oh, no…four times the fun!

I cannot say that this is why, but our twins are now old enough to drive and I can honestly say I cherish time I spend with them as much as I have at any time in their lives, and possibly more. I hope they stick around, but I can’t but be happy to see the kind of young men they have become. I would not keep them at spot in their lives for any longer than Heaven decreed.

When you’re enjoying your children, tell them how much you enjoy them and how blessed you are to have them. When you have to discipline them, let them know that you have a duty to bring them up a certain way so they’ll become the best version of themselves, because of how special they are. When God gives us blessings, there are duties that come with it. Our children are not given to us for our sake only, after all, nor even for their sake only. They need to know that, too.
