I wish to say a few things:
  1. Though I disagree with his connection between celibacy and pedophilia, he dedicates only one sentence to the idea. The rest is about the priest shortage, and therefore I find it unfair to automatically slam him for a single sentence.
  2. I am reading many replies that say “if he is fed up with being celibate than why did he join?!” Well, I do not think he views celibacy as inherently bad. I highly doubt he entered the priesthood hating celibacy, indeed why would he do that!? Instead he seems to offering his analysis of events and offering his opinion.
  3. There seems to be little fellowship in this discussion. He is part of the body of christ (and if you do not view him as so, he is still a person!). It upsets me to see such strong US v. THEM mentality rising up out of this article. To myself Curran’s article seems to be quite humble and respectful. Regardless of his past attitudes in addressing the Church, in this instance to be offering his opinions very much out of love.
On the whole, in his words I see a love of the Church, even when he disagrees with it. On the other hand, I do not see a lot of love for Curran, even when disagreeing him. And as such it disapoints me.
 
We are to love everyone, whether we find them agreeable or not. The point is that these are not new ideas being proposed by Fr. Curran. They are ideas which have been offered by Catholic dissenters for some forty years. The Church has not accepted them, and for the most part cannot accept them. If Fr. Curran’s theology had been considered orthodox from a Catholic standpoint, he might still be teaching at a Catholic university.

So true.

I never understood why so many people think that the Church reduces women in any way. In my humble opinion, no institution does more to guarantee and promote the dignity of women than the Catholic Church.

Being feminine and beautiful creates a certain dignity and calls for respect for women as they are. Real human beings. And the church already does this.
The article mentions the need for women priests. I’ve never understood why women want to be priests. Is it the idea of power that goes with being a priest? Women serve the church in many ways that are very useful. Why is it so important to some to try to become priests?

Trying to be charitable here, but this priest teaches college? He notes in his article that there has been a 30% decline in Catholicism in recent decades…then goes on to note that the number or priests has declined from 60,000 to 40,000 and blames the decline on celibacy? Due the math, brother…a decline of 20,000 priests from 60,000 is roughly 33% which mirrors the decline in the Roman Catholic population at large.

Do you mean that most Catholics condone homosexuality and contraceptives for married couples? And what else? Just curious on what your thoughts are.
 
So he wants to end priestly pedophlia by allowing priests to marry?

SMU is known a liberal UM Seminary / School. I recently came back home to the Catholic church… one reason (of MANY) being that I couldn’t stand to hear SMU professors lying to media about that no one really has any idea what arsenokoitai means.🤷
 
I am not familiar with this priest but all you have to do is read the article once to see that intelligence is not his strong suit. It seems that every week Newsweek has a giant anti-Catholic article in it. I have tried to be very even handed in my thought and speech about the scandal as a Catholic and former child abuse investigator but i finally got fed up the other day. I was at my son’s doctor’'s office with him for a check up. I think it was about 3 weeks ago. I was reading their copy of newsweek and they had this big article about the scandal (again) and about how the Pope was going to get arrested when he went to England and how he deserved it etc etc. And I just HAD IT. I tore the article out of the paper , crumpled it up and put to in my pocket to throw away later. My son who is 16 asked my what I was doing and I said enough is enough this is beyond reporting/trying to seek justice its ravenous wolves seeking blood. I told him from here on out every time I am able to remove something like this from the public eye no matter how small I am and he needs to as well.
IMO this priest does not work for God, he is just as damaging and evil in his actions as the Christopher Hitchens of the world in terms of the damage he does to the Church and the Pope. We need to pray for the Pope . If we have time to throw this priest and Christopher Hitchens in there fine but my priority is praying for the pope.

My “fed up meter” is full and I’m not taking it quietly anymore from CINO or whomever wants to attack us.
 
could I add my two cents worth? the only pedophiles we knew growing up in the fifties were three heterosexual men.All the kids in the street knew who they were and one is still alive today serving as an usher in the same church i grew up in.Back then the older kids looked out for the little ones and we would not have dared tell our parents because they were such RESPECTABLE MEN.and we would have our mouths washed with soap for telling what we knew then there were the odd conversation when you over heard an adult say how such an accusation could ruin an innocent mans life.I know now some adults knew but like everyone else sex was a dirty word and only dirty children got caught up in it .The dung hit the fan when the Salvation Army rescued a fourteen year old pregnant by her father and we were teens then and it was the sixties so people started paying attention but it was still a big secret Yeah!!!the hypocrisy blows me away .by the way this was in a very literate and well to do parish in western Scotland ,that usher is 74 years old now I wonder how much more damage did he do and how does he feel walking into that Church knowing so many middle aged people knows what he done.

That position holds that lifting celebacy would attract a different type of person to the profession. The pope admitted today that the Church hasn’t done a good job in vetting prospective priests.

His faculties as a priest to say mass have not been suspended.
He probably is still granted faculties to hear confessions.

He’s just not permitted to teach theology within the Church. Odds are good that he should be suspended, but that’s a matter between him, the pope, and his bishop.

He’s definitely got issues, and going to the press is not going to help his case any.

The damage to the Church has been done by the abusive priests and the bishops who covered up for them.
 
There are probably a few things we should do for people that promote this philosophy against our Catholic Faith.
  1. Pray for them
  2. Don’t buy the magazines that are so against the Catholic Church
  3. Speak and act out our faith and be an example for others
  4. Encourage proper candidates to consider the priesthood
  5. Get our side of the story published in acceptable publications
  6. Drag them out for public debate – put up or shut up mentality
  7. Turn Fr. Corapi loose on him and her
  8. Make sure our youth understand the Catholic Faith so this doesn’t influence them at all
  9. Vote these bad catholics out of office
  10. There are more but praying some more can yield positive results
We already know how this battle is going to end. Continue to stand tall and true to our faith.

Father Curran is just old news. This column could have been (and was, often) written 40 years ago. Dissident theologians from the 1970’s. Of course they keep popping up in Newsweek and Time, but it’s just the last hurrah of an aging breed.
