I was surprised to learn this week, reading the autobiography of someone raised in the Swiss Reformed Church that he was baptized as an infant (just around the turn of the century 1900), received religious instruction for communion (which was explained to him in terms of real presence) and confirmation. I did not know that the Reformed church practiced these activities up until just 100 years ago.
Are you old enough to remember comedian Flip Wilson’s “Church of What’s Happening Now” from his 1970s variety show? Seems he had been upstaged slightly earlier in the century.

The truth is that what the Church requires us to believe has no bearing on his inability to have a discussion on this point. He just wrote that as a dodge.
I wonder how many Fundamentalist and Evangelical sites he is on, chastising them about the “biblical criteria” for Baptism of adults???

We gotta hook him up with EdO*****, who was baptized by pure cognition. He don’t need no stinkin’ water! Promises to be an interesting conversation, once we can get them to stop assailing Mother Church.

The spirit of division certainly knows which Church to attack.

[SIGN][/SIGN]
We don’t believe they’re infallible, but they are definitive.

Like I said, show me an infant who meets the Biblical criteria to be baptised and I’ll baptise him.

Better than what? That wasn’t my argument. I never said that it does or does not include infants.[SIGN] I just said that the text doesn’t say that it includes infants[/SIGN].

Really? Can you show me the infant who can understand and articulate the Gospel?

Actually, I never said that anybody should or shouldn’t do anything. I just said that this is what we do.
Okay I’ll bite where did the infants live if not in the house?

What are the most common non-Catholic objections to the baptism of infants?
As a non-Catholic Christian, I do not object to baptism of infants. I believe it was practiced in the 1st century. After-all, it was by providence that infant was born into a household of faith. Many Protestants will dedicate their infants. It’s not quite like the Catholic position of infant baptism, but there is some kind of acknowledgment that infant being in a household of faith is in a privlidged position (1 Cor 7).

The Philippian Jailer Converted

25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, 26 and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened. 27 When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” 29 And the jailer [6] called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” 32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. 34 Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God. Act 16

Your profile says “Catholic”, yet you are supporting the errors of the baptist sect? How odd?

I am a CATHOLIC but it is not for me to be anyones judge and tell them they are wrong in their belief. Perhaps it is yours:shrug:

You are a CATHOLIC and you are to be obedient to the teaching of your Church–which claims to hold the apostolic faith. You are compelled to preach the true faith from the mountain tops.

This does not mean that you are compelled to support any type of 17th or 18th baptist heresies regarding adult believer’s baptism!!!

Scripture also teaches righteous judgement. Do you think that the Church Fathers smiled and shrugged their shoulders when heresies racked the early Church. No! They fought these heresies rigorously. Jesus Christ referred to the Pharisees as “brood of vipers” and overturned the tables of the money changers.

You should be defending your faith as a CATHOLIC.

You should not be supporting revisionist errors. 😦

Amen! 👍 This is a completely reasonable and rational interpretation of scripture in light of the history and practices of the early Church. Well done.

Christ’s peace is with you.

I knew I liked many Catholic Christians… maybe that’s why I made a stop at this site. Somtimes I think I have more in common with Orthodox Roman Catholic Christians than liberal Protestant Christians.

Reminding us of our need to be charitable is your Christian duty. Engaging in moral and doctrinal error while supporting heresy on the part of others is not a Catholic teaching and may be self-excommunicative error.

Luke 17:3 "So watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him."

2 Peter 3:17 "Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position."

Also useful is the catechism:

**CCC 2088 "The first commandment requires us to nourish and protect our faith with prudence and vigilance, and to reject everything that is opposed to it. There are various ways of sinning against faith:

Voluntary doubt about the faith disregards or refuses to hold as true what God has revealed and the Church proposes for belief. Involuntary doubt refers to hesitation in believing, difficulty in overcoming objections connected with the faith, or also anxiety aroused by its obscurity. If deliberately cultivated doubt can lead to spiritual blindness."**

If one is incapable of, or unwilling to defend the Apostolic faith, prudence requires that, at a minimum, they not support those who stand against it.

I assure you that you do. Welcome to the forums and I shall look forward to your reasoned comments.

And you are making A lot of assumptions don’t you think. All I said was that a person needs to be a bit nicer to those that don’t agree Jesus said the first Commandent is to love one another.Sorry but I don’t feel anything but anomosity . while it is great to defend your faith and what you beleive in it is not right to bash people. I really don’t feel any turn the other cheek here.

I like what Paul told Timothy on how to conduct yourself with those that we disagree with…

And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. - Paul

Turning the other cheek in such circumstances would amount to remaining silent in the face of evil (heresy). We pray for those who do not yet see the truth. Is there a greater charity than to lead to Jesus in His fulness?

All those who are united to Christ already have the fulness. What more is there if you are in Christ?

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, - Ephesians 1

Alive in Christ

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. - Col 2

Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me. - Col 1

Jesus said forgive them Father Even in the face of evil and all that was done to Him…
