Actually, I did talk to my son’s friend’s mother. I told her what her son said, and I told her we did not hate Mormons; and we would really like her son to come to my son’s birthday party. The answer was still no.

dianaiad: I will pray for you.

Anna
That is too bad. I’m sorry that your son had that experience.

Thank you for your prayers.

You still don’t get it. I don’t hate Baptists; not a bit. I have never (for instance) shoved one of THEIR kids out of a church bookstore screaming "Baptists aren’t Christian and have no business in a Christian book store!) I have never told a Baptist that she was going to hell. I have never backed away from a Baptist while holding up a cross, then literally run as fast as I could across a football field to get away from her.

Come to think of it, I’ve never thrown a bible at a Baptist, either. Or handed one a copy of “Maze of Baptism” with the comment “Baptists aren’t Christians and I would appreciate it if you kept your son away from my children after school.” Never thrown rocks at one, either.

Let’s see…what else have I never done to a Baptist…er…Oh, yeah, I’ve never told one that he couldn’t teach in my school because Baptists aren’t Christian. I’ve never rescinded an invitation to sing (after two months of rehearsals) because I suddenly got nervous that, as a Baptist, the soloist wouldn’t be appropriate for the COMMUNITY Christmas program.

In fact, I’ve never done anything even remotely like that to anybody. However, Each and every one of those things have been done TO me. By Baptists.

So.

Which direction does the hate run, again?
…and I’m supposed to not be wary…why, exactly?

Gee, I wonder why he would think that. Perhaps his parents had similar experiences? But thank you for reminding me. My eight year old was asked NOT to come to a birthday party that his friend invited him too–because his parents found out we were Mormons.

Indeed. I don’t suppose you called Sterling’s parents and asked about it, did you…or try to find out why they felt like that?

Of course you didn’t.

Reality check, Anna. The Baptists publish anti-Mormon publications that contain inaccuracies and are really rather hateful and insulting. That’s fact. The Mormons do not publish anti-Baptist material. Even your sad story…was about the Mormons being afraid that their son was going to experience hate FROM you, not about them being afraid that their son was going to be…contaminated…BY you.

They probably had reason. Perhaps they had experienced that Baptist Convention in Salt Lake City. Perhaps they just went to Baptist websites and did a search for “Mormonism.” (shrug) It’s really hard to feel the love, y’know?

…and quite honestly, your double standard is pretty big. You get all insulted because we believe in the ‘great apostacy’ (even though we don’t publish anti-anybody material), and somehow figure that this is on the same level as the stuff I just told you about? Really?

Here’s news. the BAPTISTS think that there was an apostasy. If you didn’t, you’d be Catholics.

Of course. The thread topic was something about a Baptist church burning bibles, wasn’t it?
goodness dianaiad! you know how tho hit the nail on the head. could add a ton of my own experiences but i think you did a great job summing up the gist of it. usually i get along fine with baptist until they find out im catholic, then its the period of watching them feel uncomfortable before they approach out of “concern” for my eternal destiny. im sure youve had similar experiences. then it all goes to pot. baptist have their own language their own terminology as well as us catholics and you mormons. but honestly id rather sit down for dinner and do work with my mormon friends than a baptist. and no i dont hate them either. they just tend to annoy me for the most part. your alright. dont let them get to ya.👍

LOL!

Is “alpha dog” a theological term?

If it is, who then actually are the alpha dog of Baptists?
That is too funny. I don’t think they have one to be honest. I just live there- don’t call it my address. But I do know they are all really different. The place I go to church doesn’t fall in with all that. They don’t even have the same doctrine. But they would never do something like this. They would have to burn half the church library if they did! But that is just it. Most baptists are not like this. There are some fringe groups I wouldn’t call baptist. Of course- to me- you have to be part of a denominational head to be a baptist. Otherwise you are just somebody who got mad at the denomination and wanted to keep your name while you went out and did your own thing. I do know some intense baptist groups- but also some really intense pentecostal groups who would cheer and this. We don’t get along - some of them and I - because they can’t reason clearly and think I am unfaithful because of the way I do reason. I don’t bash them. I feel like showing love in the Christ is what we are supposed to do in those cases. I hurt for them and for all the rest who just don’t understand. The message of Jesus is so different from that. From a lot of what goes on in the name of religion. It hurts my heart so much.

So I have been reading this thread about all of the abuse and weird activities supposedly coming from Baptists.

May I remind everybody that Baptist is a very broad brush.

The following names are Baptists (random off the top of my head):
  • Billy Graham
  • Jesse Jackson
  • Jerry Falwell (RIP)
  • Chuck Colson
  • Bill Clinton
  • Bob Jones
  • Jimmy Carter
  • Fred Phelps
There are nut jobs in this list (as there are in Baptists as a whole). There are also Baptists that are much more socially and theologically liberal than I as a moderate-conservative Christian am comfortable with.

In my neck of the woods (Northeast) American Baptists are more common than Southern Baptists. From what I have seen, they generally hit my sweet spot as far as what I am comfortable with (although a couple have been more liberal). If we were not attending the local AG church, we would be attending the local American Baptist church.👍

Actually, I don’t hate anybody. I do, however, know hate for MY beliefs and culture when I see it.

I"m not the one writing and diseminating titles like “Maze of Catholicism” or “Inside Lutheranism” or “How to answer the Baptists.” It is not being hateful to point out the hate, y’know.

“Alpha dog?” (grin) OK, but they do seem to be the biggest member of the ‘pack.’

Ok, you guys stop publishing the hate literature and I’ll stop feeling hated. How’s that?
Look- if you don’t like what people are saying about mormons then tell them the truth. Make sure you know it- because I have known more than one mormon who didn’t know it- and I knew more because I had read their own “prophets” and leader’s writings from way back. But stop fussing that everyone is getting your info wrong.you are now sitting on a catholic site proclaiming your right to be mormon and no one has stopped you. And you think you aren’t treated right?
I don’t get treated like men do- big whoop. I learned a long time ago it wasn’t going to happen. My race isn’t always appreciated either. Who cares? And my religion is so screwed up it is a good thing I know Jesus cause I don’t know anything else. BUt you know- I don’t make a soap box out of it. I go on. I live. I do what I know God wants of me.
I hurt and speak when I feel others are not treated right-not when I feel I am not.
And you are wrong about catholics being put in a better light than mormons in any literature. YOu just aren’t reading enough of it. Or maybe you don’t know doctrine. Plenty that is out there regarding catholics is terrible. I defend the catholic faith till I expect they are going to put me to the stake too.
The fact is that people don’t understand people- and they don’t want to. It is never productive to give in to religious hatred- whether you are doing the hating or whining about it. I find that the best way to go at things is to know my own info and to be clear on what is true and why it is. When I talk to people of other denominations than me and I have questions I ask them. Some people get mad. They don’t want to answer questions. They immediately go on the defense. That isn’t smart. How do you expect people to understand you and treat you like you want to be treated if you are always crying “unfair” to them? They figure you have issues that are bigger than the questions they have so they move on. Now no one understands. I don’t compare denominations either. I want to know what THEY believe and why. THen I can understand. Whether I agree or not is not the issue. I understand. And I don’t spend my time putting them down. Then, when someone comes along with false info I have done my research- more than that one interview that didn’t go so well. Whether I agree with it or not I can say it is just the way they believe. I can be fair. If no one is fair how do people learn it?
I know religion breeds hate. I don’t want that. There are sure things that are right and wrong- but we just don’t all see those things the same. So, how do we live together in a world where we all have the ability to choose? We can’t go laugh at each other and we can’t hate each other and we sure can’t whine. I really hate whining. We have to learn to accept one another and pray for the really confused. But don’t stop feeling compassion for them. Maybe I should say start feeling some compassion for them. To be that lost and confused is really sad.

Never. haha
Those fundamentalist, extreme right wing Christians hated Elvis when he came out.
They said he played devil music, and was evil for shaking his hips while he sang. 😃
He also recorded some gospel music.

He would definitely be on their hit list.

It is a VERY good thing I don’t judge religions by the politics of those who belong to them! (huge conservative grin…) I wouldn’t know WHERE to turn!

,<,snip…only for space> . And you think you aren’t treated right?
I’m treated pretty darned good, comparitively,…in here. That’s one of the reasons I stick around.
I don’t get treated like men do- big whoop.
Neither do I, sweetie. Mother of five here, remember?
I learned a long time ago it wasn’t going to happen. My race isn’t always appreciated either ]Who cares?
I think you would if you had actually had rocks thrown at you… or your child pushed out of a store. Oddly enough, though I have been called some pretty obnoxious things for being the ‘white’ half of a mixed race marriage, AND I’ve had the standard ‘sleep with me for the promotion’ line pulled on me in the work place (I don’t think I’ve met many women who have NOT heard that bit at some time in their working lives, especially if they are around my age), nothing produces the junk as consistently as my being LDS does.
And my religion is so screwed up it is a good thing I know Jesus cause I don’t know anything else. BUt you know- I don’t make a soap box out of it. I go on. I live. I do what I know God wants of me.
And so do I…except in forums where speaking up might actually do some GOOD.
I hurt and speak when I feel others are not treated right-not when I feel I am not.
And you are wrong about catholics being put in a better light than mormons in any literature.
Sorry, but I’ve never said that, y’know. Those who go after Mormons in their anti-literature are often as nasty, and sometimes nastier, to Catholics than they are to us.

…which is why I wonder why Catholics, being on the recieving end of such stuff, actually turn around and do it to other people. They aren’t anywhere near as BAD, mind you, but hey…look on the side bar. There are three books being advertised there. All three are anti-something, and the odds are VERY high that one or two of them are anti-Mormon. Of course, they can’t go after Mormons all the time; they give Isaam, the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Oprah Winfrey ad time, too. 😉
YOu just aren’t reading enough of it. Or maybe you don’t know doctrine. Plenty that is out there regarding catholics is terrible. I defend the catholic faith till I expect they are going to put me to the stake too.
when I see inaccuracies posted about Catholicism, I correct it myself. I’m careful about that, because I don’t want to be guilty of the same thing the attackers are, but if there is a Catholic around to back me up and confirm that what I’m saying is accurate, I’ll chime in. You know that about me if you have read much of my stuff.
The fact is that people don’t understand people- and they don’t want to. It is never productive to give in to religious hatred- whether you are doing the hating or whining about it.
“Whining” is when you complain about it all the time, and in venues where complaining about it only adds to the stress. Talking about it in a forum that is specifically about religious faith and the way people act is NOT 'whining." It is taking action with people who might actually think about it, consider it…and try to change it.

Hmmn. That sounds like a line I’ve said a lot…

OK, when some @#$@ clerk shoves my child out of a store because she is LDS, where do I go to fix it without ‘whining,’ if talking about it in HERE is whining?

My son said, the other day, “my back hurts, my neck hurts, I have a headache and I swear I can’t hear out of my right ear.” Now I’m sure you would call that ‘whining.’ I’m pretty sure that anybody would call that whining…except the doctor to whom he was speaking, and who diagnosed the kid with a nasty flu and ear infection. It wasn’t wining THEN because the doctor could fix it.

So…if I ‘whine’ about the way people treat those of other faiths in the grocery store, you are quite right. That’s ‘whining,’ pure and simple. But talking about it in HERE? No. Here is the appropriate place to discuss the way people treat each other because of their religious faiths.

No one is saying a sick child is whining. I do think you have a lot of hate in you and a big chip in your shoulder and I just have to ask- no you don’t need to tell me- but do you even live in america? If you do and you are sincerely having this much physical abuse thrown at you - move. I know places that are not mormon country- but are baptist country and I can tell you no one there treats mormons the way you are describing. No one.
I don’t think what you are saying here is really helping either. There is the one fella who has problems with baptist as well and he seems to like what you are saying but otherwise it seems to me most everyone else here already has this thing down. They really aren’t interested in shoving you around for your faith. I just think you need to calm down. I know you have feelings and I know that if your kids are being mistreated that is a problem- but like i said- move. Get away from the problem. ANd don’t spend the rest of your life being a victim every where you go. I promise you- the more you talk about how people mistreat you the less people listen. I know this. I feel for you and your kids. I really do. If you are getting beat up. I live in a place that does not want mormons but you don’t have that here. People just don’t do that- and they feel strongly about the issue too.
I am sure most of the people who have heard you here will pray for you- but not everyone wants a fight and not every view you have is correct. part of it is just the chip on your shoulder. and seriously- no one wants you or your kids to be hurt. No one here I am sure. But you know what- whether you leave or stay where you live- you are responsible for how you are going to feel about all this. I am not saying it would be easy- but I am saying you have to find it inside yourself to start working through some of this because you are a time bomb. And if you keep going with the train of thought you have it is going to hurt not only you but your kids. They are learning how to deal and function in this world from you. You have to be one of the ones who stops the hate - let that stop inside you first. That cycle of hate will just continue with your kids if you don’t show them a better way.
I don’t tell my horror stories because they don’t matter. They are the past. I let them go. I had to. That cycle will not be continued with me. Abuse isn’t just for mormons. Hate isn’t just where you live. And I haven’t always lived where I do now. But when I made the decision to let go of all that God gave me the strength to do it. To let go and to move beyond. To learn how to love people. It wasn’t easy - but it can be done. It has to be done. if it isn’t we are no better that the abusers.
I wish you peace- I really truly do. i will pray for you. and for your kids and for those who choose to mistreat you. Just think about what I said. Stop being angry long enough to consider it.

Y’know, I appreciate your sentiments. I really do…but I think it would be wise of you to read a few more of my posts…and those of everyone else, for that matter, before you begin to lecture me on whether I am a 'time bomb."

For instance, that ‘sick child’ you don’t think whines? Yeah, to me he’s a kid. He’ll always BE my kid. Right now, though, he’s a 6’6" bearded and tatooed truck driver of a 34 year old kid. I’m probably the only person in the universe who WOULD call him a ‘kid.’ But he’s a man. He whines…and that’s why I used him as an example of when it is appropriate to talk about things like this.

The thing is, these things happen all the time. They happen to Mormons, and they happen to Catholics, and they happen to anybody who is not ‘mainstream’ enough. One does not FIX such things by being silent about them in the venues in which the discussion of them is appropriate.

(looking at the above paragraph…wait…yep, it’s grammatical. Weird, but grammatically correct. Whew. )

Yeah, why don’t you just move like say up here to New England. I guarantee this stuff will not happen here. There aren’t a whole lot of Mormon temples in some parts up here, but I am sure that google would help you find communities that have them.

I don’t know any Mormon’s in our present small town, but I did in our previous one. They were normal community members and nobody bothered them.

In some parts of Maine there are Independent, Fundamentalist, Separatist, KJV only Baptists, but for the most part the Baptists I know are the moderate-conservative American Baptist types.

After all that has been said to you and by you here the problem remains that you just don’t want to get past this issue. If you don’t, we might as well move on to something else because this is a waste of time. The chip is still too big. I hate that. It saddens me. I am just really sorry that is has gone this way. But, I agree to disagree and move on. I still live in America and I can still do that. I will pray for you.

I dropped out of this thread a few days ago and I am appalled that you are still kicking this Mormon thing around. You are Way, Way off topic. You have taken up 3 page of other peoples time. Get back on topic.

Just another view that I was considering when I originally read this post… Please forgive me for playing devils advocate here… But wasn’t there a time when the Catholic Church also burned Bibles and heretical texts in order to preserve the true faith?

I’m not saying that excuses what this particular group is doing (if the article is in fact, true…) But in their minds, is it not the same line of thought?

Is this the same church or group of people that protest the funerals of fallen solders while the funeral prosession is going down the street, calling them gay’s and they will burn in hell and so on…? If so they are crazy. They are following the teachings of Satan and and covering it up by saying they are teaching the word of God. We need to pray for them and not condemn them although we don’t agree with their actions they still deserve our prayers and we need to plead to God for their forgiveness. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t agree with them or their actions but scripture tells us not to condemn but to pray for them instead. They are lost sheep that need to be found and the way to do this is through prayer.

Nope, different bunch. They are just as dangerous though. The group you’re thinking of is Westoboro Baptist Church, this group is Amazing Grace Baptist.

You should check out their website. It is hysterical. They basically hate everyone but themselves.

But you are right, we do need to pray for them.

Yup, a similar line of thought.

In their minds, what they are burning are not Bibles. Instead they are perversions of God’s Word.

I had forgotten about that. I think this isn’t going to solve anything- talking about it - but it has certainly brought out the best and worst in people! Too sad that the whole thing is happening. I am just glad I won’t be close by any of the places burning books on that night. I am afraid they would burn me too! Dead serious there!
