Baptist Church is going to burn Bibles for Halloween!

Yep, amongst other “satanic” things, they are throwing every Bible into the fire but the KJV. What are your thoughts?

Nope, different bunch. They are just as dangerous though. The group you’re thinking of is Westoboro Baptist Church, this group is Amazing Grace Baptist.

You should check out their website. It is hysterical. They basically hate everyone but themselves.

But you are right, we do need to pray for them.

This is insane they are Bibles even a poor edition deserves to be treated with some dignity and the NLT is a very good edition IMHO. These people need to do something constructive with their time and energy.

Is there a NLT catholic addition actually approved by the church? I know of only two translations that are approved by the church right now? Oh- and while this is a little OFF SUBJECT- any one know where to find a New Catholic Study Bible St. Jerome Edition? I know it was printed like twenty years ago but don’t know if it was printed any time since then or if someone has a copy of one some where they just don’t use:shrug: I am looking for one. An apologist I banter back and forth with uses one.

We may use any version of the bible not specifically condemned by the church. I don’t know of any bibles currently published that are condemned. Besides, I am a well-catechized adult and can read any bible I like. I use lots of different translations and editions. It is useful, when I run across a passage that is unclear or may have many shades of meaning, to read the passage in several different translations.

I enjoyed looking over their list of authors they will be burning. Not often that one sees the names James Dobson, Billy Graham, Tim Layhe, Mother Theresa and the Pope on a sign together, is it?

My thoughts are that this has nothing to do with genuine Baptist Churches and it is a story made up by and for people who like to stir up trouble between thoughtful and well-meaning Christians.

Helen, I wish this were “made up”, but a church in this area (another “Baptist” congregation) used to do this every Halloween. I have been in this church; I have friends who attend this church; I have family members who belong to this church (without burning Bibles!). It is:crying: all too real.

Sorry for being skeptical, but this just seems way too far out to be real.

What do they have against gospel/Christian music!? And what have they left their parishioners to listen to?

Hymns from the hymn book. Any hymn written in the last 100 years or so is highly suspect. (Yes, our local lot used to burn music too…We’re probably lucky they never decided to burn us.)

I have to put this on my facebook page. The original story got a few reactions from my facebook friends. I was the rare one that saw this as funny; everybody else saw it as deranged.

Well, their website shows they are having the burning, and a bbq. Maybe they are going to use the pages as napkins, etc. and the cd’s as coasters.

Junior, the pastor, mentioned Textus Receptus. This was a big deal to the infamous Jack Chick a few years ago. Crazy Jack still pitches the KJV based on the T.R. and even gives you verses to check to be sure your Bible is real.

I find it funny that a Baptist church would consider an “Anglican” translation of the Bible to be the only valid translation. King James was the head of the Church of England and so when he commissioned an English translation of the Bible, it was an Anglican translation (in essence). I understand that the pastor of the Baptist Church is concerned because many current translations have undergone PC and lost their legitimacy. Still many of the authors (both Protestant and Roman Catholic) have written excellent works that would profit many Christians and non-Christians to read. The best thing for us to do is to pray for God’s mercy upon these misguided souls.
