The only question I would have for him would be what did Christians do before the King James.
That would be a separate dispensation, when all that had was Jesus and could only anticipate the holy coming of the KJV. It was their faith that one day there would be a KJV that saved them.

All joking aside, I think I’d really like an answer to this.

I know the problem with these people probably better than you do unless you were raised around any of them up close and personal. What I am suggesting is a concern for how people are responding to them. I think they are wrong. Dead wrong. I support the King James Version of the bible as one of the most wonderful bibles that ever was translated. It isn’t that.
No, they aren’t thinking about how they are supporting these people financially or that people are looking at them and laughing. But I think a person who is fearing the Lord isn’t looking and laughing. They are saddened and praying. I don’t want to try to be their judge. I don’t want to try to be any person’s judge. I want to pray for them. I hurt deep in my heart for people who just don’t get it and who may be lost.
On the subject of fools- not too many weeks ago we did a series on the subject of fools from the book of proverbs. The fact that we should never call a person a fool was made clear- but somthing interesting was brought out. In doing a study through proverbs on the topic of fools you see that there are those who will hear and be changed- they just need info to properly understand- and those who you need to avoid completely because they will pollute your thinking or drag you in there. When the study was over it was clear to all that in some area of our lives- based on how the bible views a fool- we all get to wear the title.
Thought I better m

Weake clear here as well that I am not a KJV only user. I have several I look at. I have my KJV, NIV and New American in my quiet time space. That is not why this bothers me. The authors listed don’t bother me either.
This isn’t an extreme case though. I know of more than one church with these views. I know these people - maybe that is why I see more than just a joke to be had. I see souls…
I didn’t call them fools. I went to great lengths to avoid that. I did point out where their thinking is faulty. They are fourteen people with unusual beliefs who are going about making their point in an ineffective way.

(shrug)

As I mentioned, bless them and their faith; this has nothing to do with their beliefs or their faith. I’m simply stating that the ironic nature of their protest is counterproductive to the point they are trying to make.

Yep, amongst other “satanic” things, they are throwing every Bible into the fire but the KJV. What are your thoughts?

edit: forgot the link =P. Ya’ll are fast!
When I first saw the Title of this, I thought the OP would have said that they were to burn Satanic Bibles…but they’re burning all non-KJV Bibles!?! :dts:

Lord have Mercy.

Sorry for being skeptical, but this just seems way too far out to be real.

Did you folks read the sign the church had displayed?
We will also be burning Satan’s music, such as country, rap, rock, pop, heavy metal, western, soft & easy, southern gospel, contemporary Christian, jazz, soul, oldies but goldies, etc.
What do they have against gospel/Christian music!? And what have they left their parishioners to listen to?

Handel?
Mendelson?
Elvis?

I would be wary of calling anyone a fool.

Matthew 5:22 “…Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca’ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.”

Further more I think most of us here probably have “a little bit of knowledge” and we all can be dangerous with that knowledge. The church that is engaging in the show of Bible burning may very well be way off base but this discussion serves only to fan the flame of that fire.

The King James Version is a beautiful and valid translation of the Holy Scriptures. The translators endeavored to make this translation as true and as accurate as they could with the material they had to work with. This is a far cry from some “new” translations in which the translators are endeavoring change the meaning of ancient texts rather than using this ancient texts for greater understanding of God’s message.

I have no sympathy for the church or churches that are engaged in burning these Bibles but in regard to the word “fool” my favorite saying is: “Never argue with a fool, bystanders can’t tell the difference.”

It is a fun and delightful form of entertainment to argue with people when we think their ideas and beliefs are far inferior to our own.
I don’t think anyone is disputing that the King James version isn’t beautiful. Although depending on which version they are using, it may be incomplete compared to a Catholic Bible, so I don’t know that I want to say it is a valid translation if it is missing books.

I still have my KJV that I received as a Christmas present from my Presbyterian Minister Grandfather when I was 6 years old. (I’m over 50 now)

But don’t you think it is foolish to burn Bibles period? If they do this, what kind of message are they really sending? They are the ultimate authority on what is scripture?

They are also planning on burning books by Billy Graham and other religous individuals. Next they will try to say what books can be made available in the library. Farenheit 451? Huck Finn? War and Peace? The list goes on and on.

They’e going to burn music they don’t think is appropriate. You know, the Psalms are songs and poetry.

Who is the final arbitor of what is appropriate?

If you don’t like the book, don’t read it.

If you don’t like the music, don’t listen to it,

Most of all, if you think something is going to upset your sensibilities, don’t buy it.

While I truly believe they have a right to believe their version of the King James is the only one that should be used, I just think it is a very dangerous step they are taking, and they are definitely sending a bad message to their community, and the rest of the world.

Soooo, would you say you don’t like the Baptist very much or perhaps you disagree with their teaching…?
i strongly disagree with their teaching. and the baptists i have known over the years( and i know many of them, having been one myself) are some of the most arrogant, rude, cliqueish, unloving self absorbed people i know. also they smile to your face while stabbing you in the back. i could go into specific examples if you want, or you could just say your correct. i dont like baptist very much and have as little to do with them as possible. no offense intended. i just have seen alot of good people hurt by this denomination. :shamrock2:

There is no question this is wrong. It is dead wrong. It shouldn’t be happening. And- for the record- all denominations have arrogant and dangerous people in them. I added the dangerous. Not just baptist. This isn’t even a real baptist if it isn’t attached to a denominational head. It is just a church.
I would accept their right to burn their own books. I remember throwing out books I had when I realized they were not appropriate. But this is a public act meant to catch attention. And the bibles part is just overboard for me.
Still, I think, based on the fact that no one here has sounded concerned about them as people - my original point has been made.
That is just as wrong to me.

Yes, I have known those out on the fringe that believe even gospel and Christian music to be evil because the rhythms used are what some tribe in Africa uses in devil worship. I have even seen a book or two on it.

Now that’s what I was afraid of.

I don’t think I’m too out of line by concluding that racism likely has a lot to do with this church’s motives.

Yes, just what I was thinking. Treat the word of God with respect.

This reminds me of the time I visited a mosque. They were having an open house so I went because I was curious. Well, the mosque prints out a weekly newsletter. And my point is, in the newsletter was this: “Please dispose of this newsletter in a dignified manner because it contains the name of Allah and of our prophet.”

So, if they can be careful of a newsletter, then shame on these people for not having any regard for God’s word, even though they don’t like the translations. It’s times like this I’m glad I came back to the Church.
I own religious books from many faiths for reference and my own study, I treat them all with respect not just the Bible. And burning books didn’t the Nazi regime do that I would think Christians should be an example of proper behavior.

I think these people should see the film or read the short story Fahrenheit 451 its very much to the point that a culture in destroying books destroys its culture and roots to be so asceptic, as to be destructive to people. I read many books from many perspectives and cultures, classics to modern and find them all beautiful to the body of human knowledge. The Bible for me is the most important but there are wonderous books Moby Dick, Oliver Twist and yes horror like Dracula and Frankenstein. In the last the wonder of the discrimination on a creature that was brilliant but a grotesque and his heart going dark from it is a good Christian example that that could be avoided, if the people showed Christian love to the creature. And they would burn that?

And Christian rock is Christian so what is the issue there.

Most Baptists are embarrassed by this; kind of like they are of Fred Phelp’s bigoted “Baptist” community. I’m pretty sure no one on this thread has generalized yet, but I’d just like to say for the sake of those legitimate Baptists, let’s not judge Baptists in general about this.
A few reactions
Code:
1. It's silly to burn any Bibles. Probably the burning stems from (a) ignorance and (b) a desire for attention.

2. The KJV is fine. I personally love the Elizabethan language, but it is not as accurate as some of the newer translations.

3. Remember that there are numerous kinds of Baptists. Here in my town we have four Baptist churches, each with a different affiliation and perspective.

4. The Baptists are by quite a margin the largest Protestant 'family'. One out of every five Americans (20%) is a Baptist, just a few percentages less than the Catholic proportion - which ranges about 22-24%. Just how many are true Baptist or true Catholics is quite a different matter. I have followed polls in the US Catholic magazine where the results suggest that a high percentage of Catholics disagree with the church on such matters as articifical birth control and "one true church'.

God bless Catholics, Baptists and all God's children of every creed, color and country. May religion become a bridge and not a barrier.
Just an intro here- I was raised baptist. I attend a baptist church now. I was in the catholic church in my early adult life. I have been here gaining insight. So, I come at this from the vantage point of mostly baptist I suppose- but having some catholic understanding there as well.

If I were sitting in a baptist sunday school class and they were making jokes about catholics doing something like this I would be saddened and ashamed. I would walk out, but only after I told them so. I have done such a thing in class before. I don’t believe in joking this way. It is incredibly sad that these folks feel they need to do this. I know exactly the kind of people they are because I have gone to church with them. Not the very ones… but those like them. I do understand. I will tell you- even though you feel the need to offensively joke- these people truly believe they are being faithful to the Lord.

They believe they are preserving the truth. For them, each one of those bibles is a new age translation. They don’t want anything to do with it. They can’t imagine those bibles will do anything but teach you about a false way and a false god. I am telling you- that is the reason. They are sincere. I am sincerely saddened by their choice. I fear for their salvation when I hear they are going to burn bibles- but I don’t think this is a laughing matter. My heart hurts.

I am not offended that you are joking about baptists. I don’t agree with joking over any denomination-don’t think it pleases God much. But I am saddened that i don’t hear hearts hurting over this. That I hear jokes and no one saying we should pray for these dear souls who God loves. Souls who are - in my opinion- putting their souls at stake by doing this. It isn’t funny. It is tragic. It is the kind of religious superstition and hate that has destroyed lives down through the ages.

I know many baptists who would be horrified something like this was going on. It isn’t typical. Shame on them. But with all due respect. Shame on you for making jokes. I hope you pray for them. they surely do need it. I am just about to cry. this truly tears me up inside. thank you for those who were at least outraged.
Though I am no longer Baptist, I grew up in Southern Baptist Churches. I have never heard of such a practice of burning Bibles in any of them.

I do agree this is nothing to joke about. It is heart breaking to see a group of Christians following such a path, that leads to burning Bibles.

I think we should pray for these Baptists–that God will open their eyes to His truth.

----And may God forgive the rest of us for judging them.

Heartbroken,

Not that I agree, because I most definitely do not. But I think I can explain.

When I was on vacation in Maine last month, we drove by a Baptist church that called itself independent, fundamentalist, separatist, King James only. This church is most definitely of that type.

To those of this belief set, all of the items cited in this thread are…well…evil.

God has preserved His word literally in the King James Bible. Every other version of the Bible is a perversion of God’s word.

Names such as Billy Graham, Rick Warren, James Dobson and the like are new Evangelicals and are not adhering to the true Christian faith (probably because they do not consider Catholics to be the whore of Babylon). These must be separated from as much as the Catholics.

And of course much contemporary Christian music was evil. I knew a radio station of this type in Maine that was of this type. Any music that had drums was banned except patriotic and military music. Now that was before the pastor got caught in adultery. Now the station is Christian country and western.

That one point one.

Another practice that I have observed is the practice of a church having a bonfire with the purpose of burning up items that are evil. A church nearby where I live did much the same thing a while back. Interestingly enough it also was on Halloween.

What happens is that the Christians bring all of the evil stuff in their house (or what they are taught is evil anyway) to this event. This typically is stuff like rock music albums, occult stuff, might be cigarettes or booze, some books (probably not booze because it doesn’t burn). And by taking this to be burned, they are renouncing such practices and items and turning over a new leaf.

Now something about this doesn’t set quite right with me, but I am not sure what it is, and who am I to condemn. But anyway.

So the explanation is if you combine the theology of Independent, Fundamentalist, Separatist, King James Only with the practice of bringing evil items to the bonfire to be burned, this is the result.

Again, not to agree because I most definitely do not. But to explain.

AmateurPianist:

Very interesting perspective.

And…I like your new name. I think most of us are not as smart as we would like to think we are.

Your old name was “humble,” but it was kinda like wearing a “kick me” sign. 😊

Hang in there. I am very glad you decided to stay. I’m enjoying your posts. 🙂

When I first became a Christian, I attended a KJO church like this one. And while I have nothing but the utmost respect for the KJV, this is the first time I feel truly glad to no longer be attending a KJO church.

I have a quote for that. It’s my quote. That is, I said it first so if you use it, I’d appreciate it if you remembered that. 😉

You can’t blame the belief system for the actions of those who break its rules.

Now, I’m fairly certain that the doctrine held to by Baptist frowns on “smil[ing] in your face while stabbing you in the back.”

So…it’s not the doctrine, it’s the people who don’t live up to it. Of course, when EVERYBODY acts in a way contrary to the doctrine they profess, that’s called systemic hypocrisy, which is quite a different problem.

As for me, other than their doctrine (which I disagree with, being a Mormon and all…) the only thing I have a problem with in regards to the Baptists is their obsession with all things Mormon.

…and their willingness to publish officially sanctioned publications that diseminate deliberate misinformation about who Mormons are and what they actually believe. However, this is something they share with many other belief systems, including Catholics, so…oh well.

Never. haha
Those fundamentalist, extreme right wing Christians hated Elvis when he came out.
They said he played devil music, and was evil for shaking his hips while he sang. 😃

Interesting how you went from the topic of Baptist’s burning Bibles to a claim of a “Baptist obsession with all things Mormon,” and then progressed to how Baptists publish “misinformation” about Mormons; and how “this is something they share with many other belief systems, including Catholics.”
