I have a quote for that. It’s my quote. That is, I said it first so if you use it, I’d appreciate it if you remembered that. 😉

You can’t blame the belief system for the actions of those who break its rules.

Now, I’m fairly certain that the doctrine held to by Baptist frowns on “smil[ing] in your face while stabbing you in the back.”

So…it’s not the doctrine, it’s the people who don’t live up to it. Of course, when EVERYBODY acts in a way contrary to the doctrine they profess, that’s called systemic hypocrisy, which is quite a different problem.

As for me, other than their doctrine (which I disagree with, being a Mormon and all…) the only thing I have a problem with in regards to the Baptists is their obsession with all things Mormon.

…and their willingness to publish officially sanctioned publications that diseminate deliberate misinformation about who Mormons are and what they actually believe. However, this is something they share with many other belief systems, including Catholics, so…oh well.
systemic hypocricy. i like that. never heard that term before. something to look into. i also have a problem with the way they treat you
( the church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints) have had many contacts with your people and its always been positive. at least the mormons attempt to reach out and touch others with the love of Christ. i have a very high opinion of your faith. also would have problems with your doctrines but that is neither here nor their. but ive never come across a mormon missionary who was rude or arrogant. i have come across mormons who are kinda stand offish.but that was only because i was attempting to reach out to them to join with us catholics in praying for an end to abortion. had my priest blessing on this. but nobody ever seems to want to include them. so they were kinda suprised. but the seed was sown for later attempts. also the mormons and the catholics have worked together against evils such as homo sexual marraige and the like. we share alot in common in terms of morality and social justice. thanks for the new term, it may help me to be more tolerant towards the baptist. Love in Christ:)

Interesting how you went from the topic of Baptist’s burning Bibles to a claim of a “Baptist obsession with all things Mormon,” and then progressed to how Baptists publish “misinformation” about Mormons; and how “this is something they share with many other belief systems, including Catholics.”
You noticed that too. It just shows that misinformation can come from anywhere. It is something that Baptist also share with Mormons. But, as pointed out, one should not judge the belief system by the actions of individuals. It is not the belief system, but the individual that could not resist a quick shot across the bow.

OK…why does that interest you?

Well, there are fourteen people who will have a cozy fire on Halloween. Hope they have a hose handy.

Diana…

“If the KJV was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me!”
What makes you think Jesus was using the KJB.

Oh, that’s not a 'quick shot across the bow."

That was a deliberate broadside. Y’see, the only experiences I have had with Baptists (except for one very notable one with a Baptist preacher, to whom I will be forever grateful) have been precisely that. Every single publication about Mormonism from Babtist sources that I have read contains misinformation; they are factually inaccurate. Whenever I speak to a Baptist about religion, the conversation is not about what Baptists believe, but what they think I believe. To this day I’m not certain what Baptist core doctrine is, because no Baptist has ever told me, simply and clearly, what it is.

The trouble is, in my experience, they define their beliefs by mine. That is, they say “you believe this or that and we don’t…” So it is quite understandable that I would percieve this reaction as an obsession with Mormonism.

As a matter of fact, it IS an obsession; I just went to the Southern Baptist Convention website (a website devoted to the explanation of Baptist beliefs and fellowship) and I did a search for “Mormonism” on it. They have 44 PAGES, with 10 items per page, of articles about Mormonism; what it isn’t, what it is, how their missionaries are “combating Mormon onslaughts” here or there. I don’t think I will ever forget being in SLC during the Baptist Convention there, a decade or so ago. Talk about obsessed—AND scared silly. Frankly, the ones I met looked like newbie scuba divers in a shark cage–and somebody just handed them half a tuna to wave at the great white coming at them.

As to whether they share this with other faiths, well…yeah. Given that right this second CAF has “When Mormons Call” being advertised on this page (or on the page where I read the post to which this is the answer) I would say that it is shared by the Catholics. I don’t think I’ve ever seen books talking about how to answer the Methodists or the Quakers advertised on that sidebar, but I can almost guarantee you that there is an anti-Mormon book being advertised there even as you read this post.

If my statement bothers you, perhaps you should take a look at why; it’s not as if it isn’t true, after all. If you think it is true, and are not ashamed of it, then don’t take offense when I call attention to it. If you think it is true, and wish it were not, then do somthing to change it. If you think it is NOT true, well…I think I have just proven that it is. Just look at the side bar. Go do your own search on Baptist websites. (shrug)

What makes you think Jesus was using the KJB.
…and whoosh…

Bill, that was a literary device known as sarcasm. Exageration for effect. The reason it is funny is because Jesus didn’t use anything but the Torah…(if that’s what they called it during His life time…) I was poking fun at the KJV only folks who take the position that the KJV is the only, perfect, version of the scriptures, since of course Jesus did not only NOT use the KJV, He never read any of the NT during His lifetime; all of it was written after His death and resurrection.

What makes you think Jesus was using the KJB.
SHE doesnt. she was QUOTING the typical King James Only fanatics. including some who have said that sort of thing…
not to long ago a group of this kind of fanatics also said at a school board meeting that their kids didnt need to study foreign languages… waving Bible. if English is good enough for Jesus its all my kids need!

i think what several people are arguing about is the idea that the Catholic Church deliberately hands out FALSE information about Mormons.

MOST denominations have some kind of statements or books or what not on how to answer any of the door to door proselytizers. since, for example, i have never heard of door to door Quaker or Buddhist missionaries, i dont need to be as prepared to understand what they are saying and how it differs from my religion…
but the Jehovas Witnesses and Mormons send people door to door… so you are VERY likely to encounter them (usually when you are least prepared to answer any questions)

does the Catholic Church, or its members, have information about how to answer a Mormon who is intent on preaching their doctrine? sure.
there are also books on why you cant follow Buddhism and be a Catholic. in fact right now thats one of the things on “ask an appologist”

its just that the Buddhists dont knock on yoru door and ask to talk to you about their religion… while telling you they are “fellow Christians” and trying to get you to convert and come to their church.
at least not around here
but i have Mormon missionaries and JWs do that all the time

i dont consider it false information to hand out a book saying "this is the Catholic Answer to Mormon challenges to yoru beliefs.

this smile to your face and frown behind your back- or vice versa- is not a baptist trait. This is a human trait. I have seen that in catholic churches as well. In all churches- in neighborhoods and bars and restaurants- you name it.

…and their willingness to publish officially sanctioned publications that diseminate deliberate misinformation about who Mormons are and what they actually believe. However, this is something they share with many other belief systems, including Catholics, so…oh well.

Boy! Have you got hate issues! This is why we have problems - because people hold on to religious hate. Let it go! Just let it go! If you think being mormon is going to get you to heaven and you have heard the message from everyone else and still want to be mormon then go do it and forget about everyone else. But I bet even in your bible it says you can’t have hate in your heart. As a matter of fact- I know it does- and there is no way you are not going to convince me you don’t have hate right now.

And- just for the record- the southern baptists do not speak for every baptist out there. They are not the alpha dog of baptists.

I can see there is a lot of baptist hate out there- and really- it just proves that people should stop crying about being picked on for their religion and move on and live it because everybody has a sad story and everybody gets picked on. But if you let bitterness grow in your heart because of it you really hurt yourself.

Worse things were done with Jesus and Mary’s name…every day I must say

what? first books and music and then maybe believers are next? lol

This has the stink of some serious sect. God will judge one day, not we, so…Im so sorry for their blindness, praying is all that is left to do.

And- just for the record- the southern baptists do not speak for every baptist out there. They are not the alpha dog of baptists.
LOL!

Is “alpha dog” a theological term?

If it is, who then actually are the alpha dog of Baptists?

i think what several people are arguing about is the idea that the Catholic Church deliberately hands out FALSE information about Mormons.
If the publication contains factual inacuracies and the authors/publicists have been contacted about those inaccuracies, and additional editions still contain those inaccuracies, then it is deliberate, by definition.
MOST denominations have some kind of statements or books or what not on how to answer any of the door to door proselytizers.
Mormons don’t. Care to do a search on lds.org for ‘southern baptists’ or “catholics” and see what you come up with? Oh, here…let me. There are 614 entries under “Catholicism.” As far as I could see (and I looked at the first hundred of them…I think that’s a fair sample) I found only one article that directely addressed the beliefs of the Catholic faith; here. Please check for yourself if there is any inaccuracy, or even, except for the basic statement that Catholics believe that Jesus founded His church upon Peter, and Mormons believe that it was founded upon revelation, any comparison between LDS and Catholic beliefs. I don’t see anything that is presented in a negative manner. Since I am LDS, not Catholic, I can’t assure you that nothing is misrepresented, but I can certainly claim that there is no attempt to belittle or deride Catholicism in this article.

For instance, I’m sure that you know that Mormons have very strong beliefs regarding infant baptism; we don’t do it and we do not believe it is required. At all. If we were to write an article about Catholicism that was critical of that faith, I’d predict that the policy of infant baptism would be a prime target; it is a very big difference between Catholics and us…but this is how the article I’m talking about presents infant baptism in Catholicism:

"Catholics believe that man is responsible for his own sins, both mortal (grievous) and venial (less serious), but that he is also born into the sinful state known as original sin. This is the depraved condition of the material world of flesh and corruption that has prevailed since Adam’s transgression. The condition of original sin can be overcome by the spiritual covenant made in baptism. For this reason, the advantages of baptism are given to the infant as soon as possible. "

Is this not the Catholic position on infant baptism simply and accurately stated? Do you see any attempt to belittle it, or present it in a slanted manner? No…and neither is this statement surrounded by any argument against it.

None of the other articles in that 100 refer to Catholic beliefs. the vast majority of them, when they refer to Catholics at all, do so in a positive manner–or else they are by Catholics refering to US in a positive manner. 😉
since, for example, i have never heard of door to door Quaker or Buddhist missionaries, i dont need to be as prepared to understand what they are saying and how it differs from my religion…
but the Jehovas Witnesses and Mormons send people door to door… so you are VERY likely to encounter them (usually when you are least prepared to answer any questions)
Why do you have to? You have your faith; I hope you know it well enough to defend it no matter who asks questions. If you aren’t in the mood, say 'thanks but no thanks."

(grin) I can tell you that all I have to do to get rid of the Baptists or the Jehovah’s Witnesses is to tell them that I’m a Mormon…
does the Catholic Church, or its members, have information about how to answer a Mormon who is intent on preaching their doctrine? sure.
Yep…and I haven’t seen a single publication of that sort that does not present our beliefs inaccurately at some point. I don’t give a hoot about ‘negatively,’ though that’s bad enough. Inaccuracy, though, is counterproductive, it seems to me. Dishonest, too.
there are also books on why you cant follow Buddhism and be a Catholic. in fact right now thats one of the things on “ask an appologist”
…OK, so you do it to Buddhists too. This is supposed to make everything peachy?
its just that the Buddhists dont knock on yoru door and ask to talk to you about their religion… while telling you they are “fellow Christians” and trying to get you to convert and come to their church.
at least not around here
but i have Mormon missionaries and JWs do that all the time
Yes, we do. All you have to do to ‘defend’ yourself against that is to know YOUR religion.
i dont consider it false information to hand out a book saying "this is the Catholic Answer to Mormon challenges to yoru beliefs.
It is if it presents Mormon beliefs inaccurately…and as I have mentioned already, I"ve never seen a publication that does not, to some degree or other…and if it presents even one thing inaccurately, how can you trust anything else it says?

Boy! Have you got hate issues!
Actually, I don’t hate anybody. I do, however, know hate for MY beliefs and culture when I see it.
This is why we have problems - because people hold on to religious hate. Let it go! Just let it go! If you think being mormon is going to get you to heaven and you have heard the message from everyone else and still want to be mormon then go do it and forget about everyone else. I"m not the one writing and diseminating titles like “Maze of Catholicism” or “Inside Lutheranism” or “How to answer the Baptists.” It is not being hateful to point out the hate, y’know.
And- just for the record- the southern baptists do not speak for every baptist out there. They are not the alpha dog of baptists.
“Alpha dog?” (grin) OK, but they do seem to be the biggest member of the ‘pack.’
I can see there is a lot of baptist hate out there- and really- it just proves that people should stop crying about being picked on for their religion and move on and live it because everybody has a sad story and everybody gets picked on. But if you let bitterness grow in your heart because of it you really hurt yourself.
Ok, you guys stop publishing the hate literature and I’ll stop feeling hated. How’s that?

I really like the term ‘alpha dog’ of Baptists. It is true that the Southern Baptist Convention does not speak for all Baptists, but they do have the most money and they are the largest numerically, so they can get their views out to the widest possible audience.

. . . .As a matter of fact, it IS an obsession; I just went to the Southern Baptist Convention website (a website devoted to the explanation of Baptist beliefs and fellowship) and I did a search for “Mormonism” on it. I should have known better that to point out your off-topic comments about “Baptist obsession with all things Mormon.”
Interesting how you went from the topic of Baptist’s burning Bibles to a claim of a “Baptist obsession with all things Mormon,” and then progressed to how Baptists publish “misinformation” about Mormons; and how “this is something they share with many other belief systems, including Catholics.”
Dianaiad:

Your true feelings and even hatred for Baptists spilled out into your posts. I’m am saddened to see this.

The reason I made the remark is that, I see a lot of Mormon forum members drawing upon the “persecuted card”—and slipping the issue into Threads that do not pertain to Mormon issues----while Mormons continue to demonstrate behavior that is anti-Jewish, anti-Catholic, anti-any-other-religion, other than Mormonism-through baptism and marriages by proxy of Jews who died in the Holocaust, as well as Catholic Saints and other Christians; not to mention the fact that you claim all of Christianity is “Apostate.”

I remember when my son was in grade school. We were attending a Baptist Church at that time.

My son made a list of friends to invite to his birthday party. One of the friends he invited happened to be Mormon, which made no difference whatsoever to my son or to me. We made invitations and my son took them to school.

He returned from school very upset. I asked him what was wrong. He said, “Sterling says he can’t come to my party, because Baptists hate Mormons.”

It broke my heart to hear such a thing. I said to my son, “But, we don’t hate Mormons.” My son said, “I know, but Sterling’s mom said we did, because we’re Baptists, so he can’t come to my party.” 🤷

Sometimes hate is taught in different ways. This was a very sad example.

So, can we get back to the Thread topic now?

Anna

You still don’t get it. I don’t hate Baptists; not a bit. I have never (for instance) shoved one of THEIR kids out of a church bookstore screaming "Baptists aren’t Christian and have no business in a Christian book store!) I have never told a Baptist that she was going to hell. I have never backed away from a Baptist while holding up a cross, then literally run as fast as I could across a football field to get away from her.

Come to think of it, I’ve never thrown a bible at a Baptist, either. Or handed one a copy of “Maze of Baptism” with the comment “Baptists aren’t Christians and I would appreciate it if you kept your son away from my children after school.” Never thrown rocks at one, either.

Let’s see…what else have I never done to a Baptist…er…Oh, yeah, I’ve never told one that he couldn’t teach in my school because Baptists aren’t Christian. I’ve never rescinded an invitation to sing (after two months of rehearsals) because I suddenly got nervous that, as a Baptist, the soloist wouldn’t be appropriate for the COMMUNITY Christmas program.

In fact, I’ve never done anything even remotely like that to anybody. However, Each and every one of those things have been done TO me. By Baptists.

So.

Which direction does the hate run, again?
…and I’m supposed to not be wary…why, exactly?

Gee, I wonder why he would think that. Perhaps his parents had similar experiences? But thank you for reminding me. My eight year old was asked NOT to come to a birthday party that his friend invited him too–because his parents found out we were Mormons.
It broke my heart to hear such a thing. I said to my son, “But, we don’t hate Mormons.” My son said, “I know, but Sterling’s mom said we did, because we’re Baptists, so he can’t come to my party.” 🤷

Indeed. I don’t suppose you called Sterling’s parents and asked about it, did you…or try to find out why they felt like that?

Of course you didn’t.

Reality check, Anna. The Baptists publish anti-Mormon publications that contain inaccuracies and are really rather hateful and insulting. That’s fact. The Mormons do not publish anti-Baptist material. Even your sad story…was about the Mormons being afraid that their son was going to experience hate FROM you, not about them being afraid that their son was going to be…contaminated…BY you.

They probably had reason. Perhaps they had experienced that Baptist Convention in Salt Lake City. Perhaps they just went to Baptist websites and did a search for “Mormonism.” (shrug) It’s really hard to feel the love, y’know?

…and quite honestly, your double standard is pretty big. You get all insulted because we believe in the ‘great apostacy’ (even though we don’t publish anti-anybody material), and somehow figure that this is on the same level as the stuff I just told you about? Really?

Here’s news. the BAPTISTS think that there was an apostasy. If you didn’t, you’d be Catholics.

Of course. The thread topic was something about a Baptist church burning bibles, wasn’t it?

dianaiad: I will pray for you.
