This is absolutely fantastic. I love these discussions. It just makes me firmer I’m the Catholic faith.

Also, I realize that we’re getting away from the original subject, but my thirst for knowledge grows with each new discussion. But why are there so many letters to different churches in the Bible if we aren’t meant to be one unified church? I men, the apostles write to these churches telling them they need to shape up. Why would they do that if that wasn’t the case?

👍

One of the things that was really a Eureka moment for me was just this kind of thing…I mean, I was raised Catholic, but never really questioned these things until after I left the faith and then was confronted by the protestant view…And it wasn’t until much later that I began digging into it and saw what you are seeing…

Consider how the modern “Protestant” model would deal with the issue in the beginning of Acts 15…They’d argue about it for a while and, because not even Paul could settle the matter they would each declare the other wrong and set up competing churches in Antioch…
“1st Christian Church” on one corner (for the Gentiles)
and the
“1st Messianic Church” on the other corner (for the Jews)…

But this is not what happened…They took the matter “to the Church” and the decision reached in council applied to ALL the Churches universally…
It’s all right there in Scripture…

This is so neat to see that even when you’re not looking for it, the bible again and again confirms the need for a unified church and a hieracrchy within that church because no part of scripture is for personal interpretation and we need to go to the church with all of our problems. How can there be 44,000 different denominations of protestantism? It’s like they took something from the bible that they didn’t agree on the interpretation of and started a church over it. I guess this is the opening of my eyes and ears and heart by the Holy Spirit. 🙂

As a word of caution, the 44,000 or 33,000 or whatever number is pretty hotly disputed in some quarters. I don’t place much credence in it myself because the study it is based on was flawed…
That said, Even if the number of different protestant belief systems is only a couple of hundred…It would still be too many…

BTW, Did you know that the Southern Baptist church started because they disagreed over the issue of slavery? The Southern Baptist church broke away from the American Baptist Church, which broke away from the Congregationalist church in Massachusetts. Roger Williams was its founder. He founded the colony of Rhode Island so that the American Baptist Church was the established church. The Congregationalist church broke away from the Church of England, which broke away from the Catholic Church because King Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife, but Pope refused to give him an annulment. King Henry VIII is the one who killed several wives because they did not give him a male heir. He seized Catholic property and gave it to those who would support him. He died of syphilus. Is that who anyone would want to claim as the founder of their religion? That is not a history to be proud of.
Would anyone be proud of being a follower of Luther if they knew he condoned bigamy and said one was saved even if he commited adultery many times a day?
Would anyone be proud of being a follower of Calvin if they knew he wrote his “Institutes” book when he was only 26 years old? Who would trust their eternal salvation to the “wisdom” of a 26 year old? I wouldn’t!
When you read about the history and the writings of the early church fathers, you can clearly see Catholic doctrine and papal authority. The claim that the Catholic church went into apostacy, as some claim, is not supported by history. I am reading “The Building of Christiandom” by Warren Carroll. He wrote a whole series of history books. This one is the second in the series. It builds on the first one. These books show how the authority of the Pope has been handed down through the centuries from the time of St. Peter.
God would not leave us in doubt about how to please Him. He has always provided a leader. He knew we would need a Pope, so He founded His church on Peter. Acts 1 shows apostolic succession because the apostles selected a succesor to Judas after he died. Titus 1 shows how bishops were appointed to carry on the mission after Paul.
The high number of denominations mentioned earlier comes from the fact that each protestant congregation does not have to follow the dictates of its leadership. Each Baptist church is indepenent, which naturally follows if one believes in Sola Scriptura. In fact, that means that every Protestant is their own pope to some degree!

Good catch, whatever term is equivalent to mass for Baptists then., far as I know Baptists have communion maybe not as a regular schedule as Catholics concede.
Baptists communion is symbolic only with no belief in the real presence. Even if they did believe in the real presence, they lack valid priestyl Holy Orders to do so.

And they usually do it only 4 times a year after the lightly attended evening service as an after thought.

They take Lord’s Supper very literally aparently and that is why they do it after "evenin’ praychin’ ".

Each of those churches was a Catholic community under the guidance and leadership of a bishop, but at the same time in full communion with the universal Church, and in full communion with the Bishop of Rome. Think of it as different families united under the common laws and beliefs of a nation.
