Are you looking forward to Opening Day? What are your favorite teams? I like the Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, and the Baltimore Orioles. I went to Catholic school for a while with John Smoltz, formerly of the Atlanta Braves.

I’m definitely looking forward to it. I love baseball!

I’m a Mets fan though so this season will be painful again. 😦

I support the Tigers in the AL and the Pirates and Nationals in the NL.

In fact, I just this afternoon booked tickets for April 13 in D.C., Nationals vs. Braves. Hoping for a glorious Saturday spring afternoon and a Nats victory!

Cool - I am a huge Braves and Smoltzy fan. Yes, i cannot wait for Baseball season to start and even though Chipper retired I am still a Braves fan.

My Red Sox play your Twins tonight 😉

BTW…Opening Day is a day of obligation in our house. lol

I may watch some of it, but I am going to a Maundy Thursday service tonight where my nephew and niece are receiving First Communion and that comes first for me. Plus there’s NCAA basketball. 😉

May the best team win!

John Smoltz transferred to a public school in 9th grade because the baseball opportunities were better for him there. Some of us from the high school still follow him on Facebook.

A GAME ENDING PLAY THAT ILLUSTRATES WHY BASEBALL IS THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL! 🙂

It happened this week - in 55 years of watching baseball I never saw an ending like this. Outside concocted ones from Hollywood.
**Situation: Bottom of the 9th inning of a brilliantly pitched 2-1 game, visiting Cal State Fullerton (with about half the crowd there) is ranked 8th nationally and has won 9 straight.
Hometown Long Beach State bats against the Titans’ brilliant but tired starter .
– First batter singles, Fullerton replaces pitcher (so that he can only win the game or have nothing to do with it) - both sides in the crowd applaud.
The relief pitcher Mike Lorenzen (who has NOT been warming UP …) trots in from Center Field! This is not new for Cal State Fullerton who have had combination slugger/pitchers in the past.
– Second batter (after a number of pitches) also singles. First and second (tying and winning runs on) none out.
– Third batter (of course) sacrifice bunts. ONE out. Tying run on third. “Winning run” on
second. (Even certain OUTS can tie the game as can non-hits like a wild pitch or past ball!)
–Fourth batter flies to medium center field (where the strong armed outfielder is now pitching … and is replaced by a lesser arm) … a running catch (coming IN toward home) is made (TWO OUTS!) … and all look to see the tagging runners’ break for the plate**
The Titan centerfielder’s throw is UP the 3rd base line – but on the mark – reaching the catcher’s glove JUST as the 49ers’ runner (Hill) was passing him and preparing to slide.

Titan catcher Jared Deacon made a sweep tag on Hill’s back – before the latter crossed the plate – but the ball POPPED free … and dropped to the ground.

Confusion Reigns

Hill completed his slide: but appeared to be wide of the plate, not reaching with his hand – nor going back to touch.

An odd moment ensued with the*** mixed crowd cheering:

– Hill (the “tagged runner”), not looking up sauntered back towards the Long Beach bench … perhaps thinking he was out (having** felt **the “tag” before he hit home).

– while Deacon (the catcher) slowly picked up the ball and made no attempt to tag Hill – thinking he was safe (“knowing” he dropped the ball)!!!

Confusion (and excitement) GROWS

Frantically signalling, Fullerton players called to the crestfallen catcher for the ball – then CSF first baseman Carlos Lopez **applied a belated tag to the back of Hill, **

Lopez then turned around – to see** the home plate umpire signal – * “safe”. * **

Some in attendance thought the ump had already made a “safe” call when he saw the ball fly free from Deacon’s mitt and Hill slide past home.
  • (MY FRIEND sitting next to me) saw the home plate ump signal “safe” after the ball popped free …
(I, watching the play and not the ump) thought the runner had not touched the plate. NEITHER thing mattered in the end!!!

"It Ain’t Over 'Til It’s Over" – Yogi Berra

The mixed crowd roared as Lorenzen prepared to pitch to the next 49er batter – with the score apparently tied 2 -2 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the potential winning 49er run on second.

Fervent appeals to pitcher Lorenzen from the Titans’ bench convinced the Fullerton reliever to toss the ball to third base for an appeal play.

Titan 3b J.D. Davis stepped on the bag after receiving the throw, appealing to the 3b umpire that*** Hill had left too soon - before the catch.

The ump emphatically signalled “out”** 3 OUTS (!)** - ERASING the “run” Hill had seemingly scored, ruling him “doubled off” 3b - leaving early/not retagging before the Titans’ appeal throw.

The sudden (and subtracted to 2-1) victory had Fullerton and its fans celebrating … but Long Beach fans too …

– as the Long Beach confused scorekeeper misinterpreted the ruling and posted a 3-2 Long Beach final score for a moment. (!!!) wow.

It is one of the most confusing and surprising ends to a baseball game in recent memory.

The streaking and 8th ranked Titans win streak increased to 10,

they won their fifth game of the week after also sweeping Nebraska at Fullerton

– and awaited the morrow’s NCAA rankings which would probably promote them further. They did … Titans now are ranked #5.

For Long Beach, all is not lost and there is a bit of a happy ending. The games were non-league. So instead of being three games behind the Titans in the Big West … the 49ers remain “tied for first” at 0-0. (!!!) Lol.

The 49ers have played one of America’s toughest schedules with many games on the road against ranked teams. Finishing Big West play with a winning record and a 4th place or higher standing will likely get Long Beach into the postseason NCAA regionals.

Big West teams Cal Poly SLObispo (16-5) and UCI (15-5) are also in the NCAA top 25!

Life long Royals fan, I was just a young teen in 85 when the Royals won the WS. With the revamped pitching rotation, if Hosmer and Moose break out of their sophomore slumps from last year, it’s got the potential to be an exiciting year in KC.

GO ROYALS!!!

I have been to several Twins games, and enjoyed them.

I am from Lansing, Michigan, the home of the single-A minor league team Lansing Lugnuts. We used to go a lot to games and had a lot of fun. We have the St. Paul Saints here and I may go to a game.

My grandpa got me watching baseball. He loved the Yankees and would listen to them on radio. His doctor told him to stop listening to baseball because he had a bad heart, but he ignored the advice. Unfortunately he passed away (of a heart attack) before the Lugnuts came to town.

I get obsessed during baseball season, I never miss a game. My dad was drafted to the Phillies but I am a huge Texas Rangers fan. I just hope Nolan Ryan stay with the team.

An Angel fan here: I remember those '85 Royals … from the mid '70s through the mid-80s the Royals and Angels battled for the AL West (in the years where there were only TWO Divisions per league)! My cousin played on that team and has a ring 🙂

When I first became an Angel fan (1970 … was born in Chicago grew up a Sox fan) the TWINS were at their peak (the first pennant level peak … they’ve since been Series Champs) and were the Halos’ main rival.

These days the Rangers have been the big rivalry (love Nolan Ryan by the way), as well as the A’s (when they are good … like now).

It always feels good about now … as the Angels are often “Kings of December” (instead of October!). This year’s “We can’t miss now!” acquisition is Josh Hamilton.

But being an Angel fan is always a soap opera. The Cubs have not much on us … except that the Angels did win it all in 2002!

PLAY BALL! :dancing::extrahappy::clapping:

We may be getting a minor league team here in Morgantown as soon as 2015. The New York-Penn League earlier this week announced its intent to place a team here.

Morgantown would get a new stadium, which would be shared between the NY-Penn team and the West Virginia Mountaineers. WVU needs a new stadium, as they just moved into the Big 12 from the Big East less than a year ago, and their current home baseball field is below standard compared to the rest of the Big 12.

I love baseball, gives me something as a Father to Bond with my oldest daughter…

Cleveland Indians Fans here…hoping for a good year, should at least be more entertaining with the revamped team this year.

Go Tribe

Go Tribe
Though we’ve lived in the Washington, DC metropolitan area for 20 years, I’m a lifelong Indians fan. I have two daughters: one graduated from the University of Alabama in 2010 and the other graduates from The Ohio State University in May. The oldest daughter is a big baseball fan (Orioles and Nationals) and the youngest loves hockey (Capitals). Both enjoy attending games with Daddy whenever the opportunity arises! Other than the Tribe, I follow the Orioles and the Nats. I guess that comes from living here so long.

I still remember the days of Luis Tiant, Sam McDowell, Vic Davalillo, Rocky Colavito, and other great Indians players. I like the Tribe’s lineup this year. Our rotation is average, at best, but we picked up some good bats with guys like Nick Swisher (former Buckeye) and Michael Bourn. Go Tribe!

Note: The Buckeyes are still in the hunt in the NCAA basketball tournament with last night’s victory over Arizona. Now if Urban Meyer can keep the momentum going this Fall…

This is unbelievable, the entire payroll of the Houston Astros team is LESS than what A-Rod makes with the Yankees

Come on baseball, get a salary floor established.

Life-long Cardinals fan here! The 85 WS was a low-point for me as the Cards lost the I-70 Series. 😦

I was a freshman at TCU that year and all the MO girls (from KC and StL) would gather in the TV lounge each evening to watch the game.

However, we have 11 Series victories to KC’s 1, so I think I’m satisfied with that. 😃

GO CARDINALS!!!

I am a Giants fan and a Cubs fan, you have to be a true sports fan to stick by the Cubs year after year.

I become very disappointed with the local dallies treatment of baseball, they only print the box scores and rankings once in a while, while nothing can happen in the schools without it making print. Everyone here is high school football crazy and I graduated from the school Friday Night Lights is based on .
