When I got out of the military, I grew a beard.
My wife did not like it, so I shaved and kept the mustache.
My wife did not like it, so I shaved …

moral of the story is:

HAPPY WIFE … HAPPY LIFE!

Glad I am not married and never will be married. Nobody tells me to get rid of my mustache. I have had it for more than a quarter century. Also, I have started my winter beard.

Or you could marry a woman who likes mustaches and beards.🙂

She didn’t tell me to get rid of it, She just told me it scratched her

I think as long as it is kept neat beards can be quite distinguished and scholarly looking, provided of course you have enough facial hair to pull it off.

Try shaving it and asking people to compare/contrast. Then, for a lark (or if you just want to get fired), try growing it out to a ridiculous length and breadth just to see how people react. 😉

I love my boyfriend’s beard and think he looks both more erudite and more masculine with it.

Hmm… the joys of a wife and children… the joys of a mustache. To each his own, I guess.

Just out of curiousity…Does the beard soften up as it gets some length or does it remain scratchy?
If the fellow in question uses some conditioner on it in the shower, it should soften up. Beards can be downright snuggly.

No. Actually, my life may be taking another path.

I grew up with a daddy who still wears a beard. It looks great on him, and whenever I kiss his cheek, it is always soft.

However, I have never been attracted to men with beards only because it reminds me of…well, Dad. I am very attracted to the personality qualities my husband shares with my father, but I don’t want to be kissing someone who feels like my dad! 🙂 Blecch

Fortunately my husband likes being clean shaven and it is the more professional choice for him anyway. He does have dark hair and is fair and rosey-complected, so he has to shave daily and still has a *slight *shadow most of the time. But I think THAT is kinda sexy. 🙂

I’m sure it does depend on length, but I just love beards. The kind I am thinking of are the ones relatively close to the skin (not too long!). My boyfriend wears one, but trims it nicely. I always thought it looked nice at school when the male profs would let their beards grow out over the winter. Looked warm and cozy, and then they looked refreshed in the spring. I think as long as you keep it clean and trimmed and nice, it looks just as professional.

Yes… my dad always has a beard, too, so I’m sure that’s why I’m so attracted to them.

Also, five o’clock shadows are sexy, I must agree.

And bears are definitely snuggly! As long as they aren’t prickly… there’s a certain length where they are perfect… and soft… and it feels nice to rub against the cheek!

But I think you were looking for a more “workplace” type of answer…still had to offer my :twocents: times two on one of my favorite things!

I’ve had a beard since high school. I used to shave during the summer but marriage put an end to that. She won’t let me shave.

After 30 years of my dad almost always having a mustache, I must say the only drawback is that when I go snowskiing with him he sometimes gets lovely snotsicles in his 'stach.
Sounds bad but I know when I go skiing the ice that forms is from exhaling. You clean shaven people have noplace for the water to condense and freeze. Exercise turns Sugar and Oxygen into Water and Carbon Dioxide. We exhale, the water freezes on the nearest thing: a mustache if one is available.

you are all so silly talking about softening beards… oh well…
