Ortho:
I predict it will be a huge hit. Millions of books have sold. I expect the same huge success for the movie. When does it come out?
Why am I not surpised you said that

Somethings to ponder…

1.) NBC never intended this show to be anti-Christian.

2.) NBC may have pulled it from their line-up, but they are making it available via the internet from their website so that the fans of the show can see the final episodes.

3.) The Book of Daniel was an 8 episode run. It was never intended to run any longer than that anyway.

4.) If you guys were really serious about cleaning up television, you probably wouldn’t have been focusing on the Book of Daniel. There are other shows out there that are far more filthy in their portrayal of things that Christians consider unacceptable. Why aren’t you out there trying to get Desperate Housewives pulled? It promotes fornication and adultry. What about Boston Legal? What about the TV airings of the Howard Stern Radio Show? Friends? Sex in the City? Just about every program on the History Channel that doesn’t tell religious history the way we believe it occured… What about The Simpsons? Family Guy? I really don’t think you’re all that serious about cleaning up television… If you were you wouldn’t have been after a limited run show about an Episcopal priest who was trying to fight off and deal with his personal demons.

It’s mighty hard to portray anything about modern culture without wounding some sensitive Christian.

Protests and petitions wouldn’t have meant squat to NBC if the show had been a ratings success. Heck, NBC execs would probably love the controversy if it was stirring up greater interest in a successful show. For whatever reason, the public didn’t have an interest in the show but I hardly view that as a huge victory for Christian values. That new Heather Graham show was yanked after only a couple of episodes and that wasn’t facing any backlash from angry Christians.

Me, I kinda liked the show. It showed people trying to do the right thing in the face of human weakness and Jesus being (Are ya ready for this?) compassionate and understanding toward people battling sin and their own frailty. Funny that such a portrayal of Christ angers so many Christians.

hmmm…

Are you saying that, as Christians, we are not allowed to be offended?

Of course not. I am observing that you are offended. But don’t get the idea your sensitivity is contagious.

So. Who is our next target?

How Christian!(NOT) This is why people turn from religion. This quote disgusted me. This show was targeted before you saw it. You need to make your own mind up, not be led by others with agendas. I will pray for you.

I came to this site to see what the opinion was. I am a 42 year old woman, raised Catholic. My father was very religious and instilled those values in me. When I was a teenager, I had my usual “why” phase and got away from the church. I do not attend regulary. That does not mean I do not pray, or try to live my life as Christ would want. That being said, I have to disagree with people condemming this show - saying it is immoral, a disgrace to Jesus and God. If anything, this show has brought me back to my faith. If only the last few episodes were allowed to be viewed on TV. Episode #106 (titled “Forgiveness”) was the best piece of television I have EVER seen in my life. You could go and find it on the NBC site, but I know that most people will not do that. Please let me tell you about it (brief synopsis) Daniel’s son Peter (who is gay) gets attacked and beaten until he ends up in a coma on life support. Daniel and his family are brought back to 2 years ago when Peter’s twin died of leukemia. The show goes back and forth between the past and present, starting with Daniel on the pulpit giving his sermon about forgiveness. It shows Daniel being in the hospital room with his son 2 years ago - the son is sleeping and Daniel see’s Jesus. He cries and asks Jesus, "Why, why is my son being taken from me, why is he dying? and Jesus replies “why dont you ask why was he born, why did he live? when you think of how his presence impacted those around him, he still lives” HOW IS THIS BAD??? Why did this show get cancelled? Later, the man who beat his son is brought to him. Daniel wants to understand how this man could have such hate in him to hurt another human being in such a senseless way. You see in conflict in Daniel, as he talks to this man (who is unaware it is his son he hurt the night before). Finally Daniel tells him, you met my son, you went home with his blood on you. The man turns to leave, says “your fag son got what he deserved” and as you see Daniel go to cross the room after him, it cuts away to Jesus in the corner quietly he says “Daniel” like a father would say stop to a young child about to do something wrong. Daniel grabs the man by the front of the shirt and pushes him against the wall Jesus again says “Daniel… don’t.” Then it cuts away again, we see the man with a bloody nose, and blood on Daniel’s hands. Daniel is on the floor crying - upset over what he has done. He now knows the rage before you hurt someone like that. and he is upset. The man leaves and Daniel stands, stumbles, and as he is about to fall, Jesus catches him. (I had goosebumps at this point and was crying like a baby). Jesus holds him while he weeps and tells him “It’s ok, you will be ok” and Daniel says “Please, dont forgive me for this, I don’t deserve it” But Jesus says “but I do” AGAIN, HOW IS THIS BAD??? overall, yes some of the shows charecters were stereotypes. But isnt that true on all tv today? This show could have such a positive impact. It is not perfect, but as the bible tells us “Let us without sin cast the first stone”. We are adults, we have our faith. Watching a TV show will not make us bad, if we emmulate that behavior we are bad. This show had a family (dysfunctional yes) but the bottom line was that you were treated with respect - this family could always count on each other, even when they had done wrong - and their faith was the cornerstone of their life. They are not perfect. They are trying. Was Jesus depicted in a mocking way? Not to me, to me he was approachable, real, I have found myself conversing with him much more since this show started. As far as the creator being gay. That is his business. Not mine. I have one judge, and that is God. When I get to the pearly gates, I will be judged, and I try not to judge others. Perhaps if more people did this, the world would be a better place. Thank you for letting me vent. Thank you for taking this into consideration. Please, if you can, watch episode #106 on line - it is the greatest piece of tv you will ever see. I am so thankful I had the privilage to see it.

what?!?!

noooo!!

i loved that show!

why cant you guys just accept that not everyone believes in Christ and isnt afraid of the damnation you promise?

This is very un-American and I am shocked that NBC would pull the show because of some overzealous Chrisitans who have nothing better to do…

I loved the show as well–and honestly thought that it could do the fallen away Christian some good. The characters were real (even if exaggerated)–real people sell drugs, real people are gay, real people talk to Christ in a casual manner at times…
I thought that this was much more realistic to what the average american family is like than what the family on 7th heaven (or any such show) was like…
The show wasn’t perfect at all but it dealt with some hard hitting issues–and the realistic choices we have as both humans and Christians to deal with the issues…
It enrages me that a show like this gets taken off the air–but actual foul shows remain on the air (ones that have nothing to do with god–ones that are all about promiscuity, foul language, and poor ethics)…
Seriously some people need to lighten up in this world–and accept that some things that may not be helping them on their journey are helping others…

One of the online only shows last week was truly amazing. We saw the family as one child (Peter) was unconscious and they didn’t know if/how he would come out of it and the family’s reaction to that, plus there were flashbacks to when Jimmy died (Peter’s twin who died from Leukemia two years earlier). It was an amazing episode that was easily the most religious television I had ever seen.

Here are some snippets:

Judith and the retired bishop (Daniel’s father)

J: I thought that after Jimmy died God would have been satisfied.

B: You know it doesn’t work that way… Judith, do you love?

J: Love who? My family?

B: Let’s start there.

J: yes, of course.

B: Why wouldn’t that be enough to satisfy God?

At the end of the show, a friend of Daniel’s sets up a meeting with the guy who beat Peter, because Daniel wants to talk to him, to understand why someone would do such a thing. The guy is a jerk, calls Peter a fag and Daniel hits him. So the guy is bleeding, and Daniel is crying, because he realizes that it was an evil act. His friend takes the guy away and Daniel is crying and Jesus comes to hug him in his pain and Daniel, crying says please don’t forgive me (because he feels that having done such evil he doesn’t deserve forgiveness). Jesus keeps holding him anyway.

I do not understand why Catholics got all agitated by this show.If I was protestant I could understand it. Catholics should have been relieved that for once someone else was being charactirized.
