It was long debated among the learned at what period of gestation the human embryo begins to be animated by the rational, spiritual soul, which elevates man above all other species of the animal creation and survives the body to live forever…
Interesting. Regarding the inherent nobility of human beings, I trusted that you and Mr. Doyle already saw the arguments I posted (and I’m not going to bother playing games). The definiton of “nobility” is with reference to the* moral character *of the individual. (see The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language).
Nobility – Having or showing qualities of high moral character, such as courage, generosity, or honor: a noble spirit.
This characteristic is reserved to human beings since animals cannot make moral judgements (they cannot sin).

This is essential to a repeated theme in this thread – the devaluing of human life which is a product of materialist-theories.

Noble:
of an exalted moral or mental character or excellence; lofty: a noble thought. - dictionary.com

Reggie simply picked the a meaning that could not apply to animals. Other meanings clearly can. And anyone who thinks some dogs are less noble than Charles Manson… 🤷

Shoving Jews into gas chambers, um? But you couldn’t find even one instance of that. Is it any wonder the Anti-defamation League took him to task for his blood libel?
Funny how people like that, never realize it applies to them, um?

The physician Josef Mengeles, but you don’t want to call doctors that do medical experiemnts scientist. So I did find an example, an example recogbized by other scientists even, but you don’t want to recognize it.

As far as today-- goes ‘safe sex’ education that encouraging premarital sexual experimentation by children now…not even just teens or young adults, is literalluy throwing those kids to the wolves. You can tear a person apart, destroy them in more than one way. Telling kids they are complex biological machines and nothing more destroys their whole sense of being a unique precious individual chosen and wanted by God. yet this is the idea that they are fed by public education set on being true to science alone-- materialistic science that has eliminated God and the immortal soul.

anyone who thinks some dogs are less noble than Charles Manson… 🤷
I see your point here, but I think there is a spiritual point in the nobility slimed by Charles Manson by himself. Christ came down and assumed our flesh in order to offer the redemption and even to offer us brotherhood; Manson’s redemption is not outside the power of the cross and it was made possible by the inherent nobility within Manson or there would be nothing to redeem.

I don’t want to get hung up on the semantic meaning of nobility, but focus on the inherent worth of man independent of his extrinsic, external values. Acknowleging this inherent worth makes genocide and abortion and the horrors nonsensical and horrifically wasteful. Acceptance of the intrinsic qualitatively different nobility of man shines a light on these moral horrors.

Conversely, a solely materialist view that sees man as only an advanced animal puts on man values and rights and worth based on only natural extrinsic values which ultimately are not absolute and subject to judgement. Man then becomes an animal or just a lump of tissue and in that perspective genocide, enforced planned parenthood, euthanasia are simply good human husbandry, culling the herd of the weak for whatever reason.

If science can be paired with materialism (as opposed to just the scientific method) we have a real problem. The scientific method is a wonderful tool for learning about the natural world and if its good reputation is being borrowed in the name of science by materialism we have the conflation of a very good idea with a very evil idea. What a mess!

How to defend against it?

postscript
A book I’m reading Trojan Horse in the City of God speaks about someo of these themes in pretty easy terms. Dietrich von Hildebrand is the author.

Barbarian observes:

I don’t want to get hung up on the semantic meaning of nobility, but focus on the inherent worth of man independent of his extrinsic, external values.
In Catholic terms, “sacred worth”
Conversely, a solely materialist view that sees man as only an advanced animal puts on man values and rights and worth based on only natural extrinsic values which ultimately are not absolute and subject to judgement.
Which is why Darwin objected to treating humans as mere animals.
If science can be paired with materialism (as opposed to just the scientific method) we have a real problem.
If anything is paired with philosophic materialism. But science is not about philosophic materialism.
The scientific method is a wonderful tool for learning about the natural world and if its good reputation is being borrowed in the name of science by materialism we have the conflation of a very good idea with a very evil idea. What a mess!
Scientists, as you might have noticed, are not very friendly to the idea that their method might be enlisted to prove or disprove materialism.
How to defend against it?
Pay attention to scientists? Stephen Gould, for example, has several essays on the necessity of scientists limiting themselves to what can actually be demonstrated by science. And he’s quite hard on anyone who attempts to use science to make materialistic or anti-materialistic points.

Perhaps it is better to replace the term ‘nobility’ as being inherent
and use the word ‘dignity’. I can see the point that ‘nobility’ has to do with possessing a quality of virtue but ‘dignity’ is something that comes to men and to angels (including fallen angels) based on their iinherent nature. Apparently in the Renaissance a man wrote a piece called the "dignity of man’ and it was a reflection of man as a unique creation capable of spanning all other forms of creation by his own conscious choices. Man could become like an animal by choosing to be wild and untamed. Man could be like a plant by being tied to his senses. Man could be like an angel by study of spiritual things and man could be united to God through contemplation.

On science and materialism:

"“Science is unquestionably a worthwhile pursuit, but many have come to view science as an end unto itself. The unbridled pursuit of science and technology is glorified, and any who suggest constraining science within limits of morality or propriety are condemned. Raising the simple question of whether something should be done is considered taboo. Radical science advocates are only interested in whether something can be done.”

Central to the “science without limits” view is the notion that man is merely an animal, the product of random chance. God is removed from the creation equation and the notion of moral truth is abandoned. Notions of right and wrong are relegated to the spheres of theology and philosophy and do not constrain the consciences or actions of radical scientists."
centerforajustsociety.com/press/article.asp?pr=3441

So the notion that to merely make sure that science was strictly
factual and not about determining materialism is not sufficient to stop scientists from doing what they will do given no restraints.

As the above article shows it is completely possible to place human DNA in a cow’s egg, that is fact…but it is an act that treats the human DNA as being a substance equal to any other substance (lint, grass, animal DNA etc…) and available to any scientist to do what they want with, all because God and moral considerations are not considered legitimate reasons for restraint and are not considered legitimate topics for scientists to discuss or consider.

‘safe sex’ education that encouraging premarital sexual experimentation by children now…
I believe Barbarian is on record supporting sex education programs that are “not abstinence only”.

He hasn’t specified the nature of such programs but if they’re not oriented to abstinence-only, then they promote some form of “safe sex”. Barbarian has denied supporting safe-sex programs, but he doesn’t support abstinence-only.

Safe-sex programs promote condom use, for example, to children in school.

I believe this is the only alternative to abstinence-only programs. They tell children to “be safe” when engaging in sexual activity.

If this is Barbarian’s position – it says quite a lot.

It’s a perfect match with any ideology (like Darwinism) that degrade human beings to the level of animals (and sexuality to the materialist aspect alone.

… man is merely an animal, the product of random chance. God is removed from the creation equation and the notion of moral truth is abandoned.

centerforajustsociety.com/press/article.asp?pr=3441

That is standard Darwinian orthodoxy. There is a minority opinion that claims that human beings are animals but they’re “special” animals.
So the notion that to merely make sure that science was strictly
factual and not about determining materialism is not sufficient to stop scientists from doing what they will do given no restraints.
True. It’s not all scientists since there are some rare exceptions. But the dominant idea in the scientific community is that materialist philosophy is the foundation behind all science.
A very good point. Catholic theology conflicts with science on this issue. It is not true to say that there is no conflict between science and religion – since atheistic-materialists can conduct scientific experiments which are immoral and a violation of the Catholic Faith. There is nothing within science to prevent such things, since moral considerations come from the Revelation of God to Man, as well as the morality of the natural law (which science cannot explore).

That also explains why science is radically different than something like plumbing or mathematics. The potential for sins against God and humanity are much greater in science where experiments with human life are proposed.

The theistic scientists who never issue warnings about such things are covering up the immense dangers in science. Those who defend Darwinism as if there are no serious dangers inherent in that philosophy are not bringing light to the situation.

I believe Barbarian is on record supporting sex education programs that are “not abstinence only”.
That is correct. The evidence shows that kids who are told that abstinence is the only safe practice, and are also given the facts about reproductive biology, are much less likely to become parents in their teens, or to contract an STD. The numbers are so striking that many states are now refusing federal money that requires “abstinence only.” The toll on children is much too high.
He hasn’t specified the nature of such programs but if they’re not oriented to abstinence-only, then they promote some form of “safe sex”.
No. Mary confuses “safe sex” programs with comprehensive sex education. I challenge her to show even one “safe sex” program that works as well as a comprehensive program that emphasizes abstinence.
Barbarian has denied supporting safe-sex programs, but he doesn’t support abstinence-only.
For the most basic of reasons; it leads to higher rates of teen pregnancy and STDs.
Safe-sex programs promote condom use, for example, to children in school.
I believe this is the only alternative to abstinence-only programs.
No. It is quite possible to promote abstinence, while explaining to students how pregnancies and STDs happen.
They tell children to “be safe” when engaging in sexual activity.
If this is Barbarian’s position – it says quite a lot.
This statement is somewhat better than pretending people one doesn’t like, believe things one invents. But not by much.

It fits perfectly with her judgment that if a child fails and engages in sex, he or she needs to have a pregnancy or STD as a lesson.

What a grim and anti-Christian idea.

Charles Manson may well end up in a much higher state in heaven than you will
Who knows? He may come to his senses and repent. The door never closes until we close it finally.
– if you even get there at all.
Being a Christian, I don’t make those sorts of insinuations. It’s like acid on your soul, Reggie.

… man is merely an animal, the product of random chance. God is removed from the creation equation and the notion of moral truth is abandoned.
Sounds like a fundamentalist’s imagination of what science is like. When the Pope says that man almost certainly evolved from other organisms, he didn’t mean it was random. Darwinian theory points out that it can’t be random.
Notions of right and wrong are relegated to the spheres of theology and philosophy and do not constrain the consciences or actions of radical scientists."
Darwin pointed out that humans are unique among life on Earth in having rights to life and liberty. Darwinists lead the criticism of radical eugenics, and even showed that their ideas were indefensible. Silly fundies.
That is standard Darwinian orthodoxy.
No, it’s just some unfortunate person bleating his hatred for science through his imagined idea of Darwinism. Humans are animals, of course, but we are not merely animals. We have been given an immortal soul directly by God.

**You don’t have a Soul. You are a Soul. You have a body. **
C.S. Lewis
That also explains why science is radically different than something like plumbing or mathematics. The potential for sins against God and humanity are much greater in science where experiments with human life are proposed.
That is only due to your lack of imagination as to what other scientists can do. Science is merely study of the physical universe. Not really different than plumbing in methodology.

Just more complex. You do yourself no favor by accepting the fundamentalist notions of science.

Who knows? He may come to his senses and repent. The door never closes until we close it finally.
He may have already repented – while you just claimed that he is not as noble as a dog.
Being a Christian, I don’t make those sorts of insinuations. It’s like acid on your soul, Reggie.
You just made that sort of insinuation.

For the record, I certainly hope you will attain eternal salvation and that is my prayer for you.

Science is merely study of the physical universe. Not really different than plumbing in methodology.
Mary already pointed out a fundamental difference which explains why science can (and does) easily transgress Catholic moral norms.

That is correct. The evidence shows that kids who are told that abstinence is the only safe practice, and are also given the facts about reproductive biology, are much less likely to become parents in their teens, or to contract an STD.
What “facts about reproductive biology” that are given in non-abstinence only classes are you talking about?

The fundamental difference in sex education programs is that the abstinence only programs do not promote condom use. The programs you support do promote the use of condoms.
The numbers are so striking that many states are now refusing federal money that requires “abstinence only.” The toll on children is much too high.
That is right. Those states are turning to programs that teach children how to use condoms. It is becoming clearer that you support those programs (although getting this fact from you is like pulling teeth – you are dodging and covering-up your own position).
No. Mary confuses “safe sex” programs with comprehensive sex education. I challenge her to show even one “safe sex” program that works as well as a comprehensive program that emphasizes abstinence.
The comprehensive programs you’re talking about promote condom use to children. That’s what you’re supporting.
No. It is quite possible to promote abstinence, while explaining to students how pregnancies and STDs happen.
Abstinence-only programs do precisely that. They point out that pregnancies and STDs happen through promiscuity – and that is why abstinence is taught.
It fits perfectly with her judgment that if a child fails and engages in sex, he or she needs to have a pregnancy or STD as a lesson.
I’ll conclude that you want schools to promote condom use among children.

Again, this fits well with your Darwinism. It doesn’t fit with your claims of being an orthodox Catholic though.

Eventually, there will be a conflict between your passionate Darwinian belief and your Catholic faith. In this case, you’ve compromised your faith by arguing in favor of condom-use with children.

Barbarian observes:
Who knows? He may come to his senses and repent. The door never closes until we close it finally.
He may have already repented
Not the last time we heard about him.
while you just claimed that he is not as noble as a dog.
That’s true. He isn’t. He’s what happens to a human without a conscience. He has a history as a sociopath, long before the murders took place. Such people lack any sense of right or wrong, apart from their own desires.

(Reggie suggests that Barbarian may not be saved)

Barbarian observes:
Being a Christian, I don’t make those sorts of insinuations. It’s like acid on your soul, Reggie.
You just made that sort of insinuation.
No, I just suggested that indulging in such things are not good for you.
For the record, I certainly hope you will attain eternal salvation and that is my prayer for you.
I hope you’ll act more like a Catholic in the future. And yes, you’ll be in my prayers.

Barbarian observes:
Science is merely study of the physical universe. Not really different than plumbing in methodology.
Mary already pointed out a fundamental difference
The only difference is that she isn’t personally offended by plumbing.
which explains why science can (and does) easily transgress Catholic moral norms.
Impossible. Science can no more make moral judgments than plumbing can. Fortunately, scientists (and plumbers) can, but they can’t use science (or plumbing) for that purpose.

Barbarian observes:
That is correct. The evidence shows that kids who are told that abstinence is the only safe practice, and are also given the facts about reproductive biology, are much less likely to become parents in their teens, or to contract an STD.
What “facts about reproductive biology” that are given in non-abstinence only classes are you talking about?
I wasn’t talking about “non-abstinence only” (whatever that is).
The fundamental difference in sex education programs is that the abstinence only programs do not promote condom use. The programs you support do promote the use of condoms.
No. They merely tell kids how pregnancies actually occur, and they tell them how STDs occur. In fact, they tell them everything in comprehensive sex education, but they still tell them that abstinence is best. And the great thing is, it works.

The point of doing sex education is to reduce pregnancies and STDs. Comprehensive works. Abstinence only makes it worse.

Barbarian observes:
The numbers are so striking that many states are now refusing federal money that requires “abstinence only.” The toll on children is much too high.
That is right. Those states are turning to programs that teach children how to use condoms.
If that was it, you wouldn’t see much effect. Instead, they teach how reproductive biology works. The truth turns out to be the most sensible thing to tell kids. Amazing, isn’t it?
It is becoming clearer that you support those programs (although getting this fact from you is like pulling teeth – you are dodging and covering-up your own position).
You’re really upset that I didn’t defend Planned Parenthood’s approach. So you’re just making the accusation, anyway. It’s not working for you.

Barbarian observes:
No. Mary confuses “safe sex” programs with comprehensive sex education. I challenge her to show even one “safe sex” program that works as well as a comprehensive program that emphasizes abstinence.
The comprehensive programs you’re talking about promote condom use to children. That’s what you’re supporting.
Um, no. You’re the one who’s telling me that condom training is better than comprehensive sex education (which says abstinence is best). You’re the one bringing it up.

No. It is quite possible to promote abstinence, while explaining to students how pregnancies and STDs happen.
Abstinence-only programs do precisely that.
If they did, they’d be as effective as comprehensive sex education, but that’s not what happens.

**Many American youngsters participating in federally funded abstinence-only programs have been taught over the past three years that abortion can lead to sterility and suicide, that half the gay male teenagers in the United States have tested positive for the AIDS virus, and that touching a person’s genitals “can result in pregnancy,” a congressional staff analysis has found.

Those and other assertions are examples of the “false, misleading, or distorted information” in the programs’ teaching materials, said the analysis, released yesterday, which reviewed the curricula of more than a dozen projects aimed at preventing teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease.

The report concluded that two of the curricula were accurate but the 11 others, used by 69 organizations in 25 states, contain unproved claims, subjective conclusions or outright falsehoods regarding reproductive health, gender traits and when life begins. In some cases, Waxman said in an interview, the factual issues were limited to occasional misinterpretations of publicly available data; in others, the materials pervasively presented subjective opinions as scientific fact. **

Kids aren’t stupid; they have other sources of information, such as the internet. And if you lie to them, they blow you off completely. That alone could account for the large increase in pregnancies and STDs found in kids who had “abstinence only” education.

The truth matters. This is one of the reasons why it matters.

It fits perfectly with her judgment that if a child fails and engages in sex, he or she needs to have a pregnancy or STD as a lesson.
I’ll conclude that you want schools to promote condom use among children.
It’s your M.O. You make up things and attribute them to other people.
Again, this fits well with your Darwinism.
Darwinism isn’t about ethics or morals. You might as well expect plumbing to be about ethics and morals.
It doesn’t fit with your claims of being an orthodox Catholic though.
When you suggested that it was good for kids to get pregnant or have STDs, if they fail to remain chaste, that’s all the evidence we needed about “orthodox Catholicism” from you.
Eventually, there will be a conflict between your passionate Darwinian belief and your Catholic faith.
What’s happened Mary, is your hatred for Darwin has become more important than your faith as a Catholic. You find common cause with anti-Catholics who also hate Darwin, than you do with Catholics who accept creation as it is. The Church has no problem with evolution as scientists understand it.
In this case, you’ve compromised your faith by arguing in favor of condom-use with children.
One more false accusation; is anyone keeping count?

Barbarian on Charles Manson’s alleged repentance:
Not the last time we heard about him.
You’re not free to judge another’s soul - as you’ve just done.
No, I just pointed out that his last public statements expressed no repentance. Feel free to show me I’m wrong.

Barbarian:
No, I just suggested that indulging in such things are not good for you.
No, you did insinuate.
Hmm… (Barbarian checks) Nope. You made that up. Not a word about your salvation or lack of it.

Barbarian suggests:
I hope you’ll act more like a Catholic in the future.
You need to act like a Catholic. You support the promotion of condom use among children.
You’re not acting like a Catholic, now. Catholics are not supposed to lie about other people.
