Pope Benedict just landed in Castelgandolfo. It’s a shorter trip than I imagined.

As I sit here, in the Chaplaincy office of the prison I have worked in for the last eighteen months, all is silent. That’s because yesterday the last prisoners left here and those staff members who are left are closing the prison down - a victim of budget cuts.

I’m fairly despondent about how things have gone as I thought I would be here to minister to those here in my care for some years yet. And in this way I can feel what Pope Benedict was feeling when he spoke in such a heartfelt way about the terrible trials he has undergone for the Faith and the Church. But I can take comfort as well as he can, because as I’m sure he is aware - as well as I am - we are not alone and in our sorrow we can also find hope. This is the foundation of our Christian faith.

God will find a path for us both. Please pray for Pope Benedict and, if you can spare a little more, for me.
