Even though Hildegard of Bingen was already on the list of Catholic saints, she had not been officially canonized. So to remove all doubt, Benedict XVI extended the liturgical cult of St. Hildegard of Bingen, to the Universal Church, which automatically inscribes her in the catalogue of saints.

This is great news! And it’s about time! 😛

Just wondering … has her canonization “process” been the longest? She died in 1179, so that’s 833 years.

She’ll probably be made a doctor of the Church soon too.
Yes! Apparently she is going to be made a Doctor of the Church later on this very year, in October or November I believe.

What an incredible canonization process this has been - I think that her journey from sainthood and now to eventually being declared the 34th Doctor of the Church has been unique in Church history.

To celebrate, here is some of her timeless musical compositions and lyrics. Saint Hildegard said that in her music she was trying to imitate the singing of the angels that God had revealed to her. Enjoy!

An ode in praise of creation called “Spiritus Sanctus” (Holy Spirit) and based (I think) upon Psalm 110/111 - she wrote the lyrics and composed the music:

Original Latin Text
texts from the chants of
Hildegard von Bingen

Spiritus Sanctus vivificans vita

Spiritus Sanctus vivificans vita,
movens omnia,
et radix est in omni creatura,
ac omnia de immunditia abluit,
tergens crimina,
ac ungit vulnera,
et sic est fulgens ac laudabilis vita,
suscitans et resuscitans omnia.

English Translation
texts from the chants of
Hildegard von Bingen

Holy Spirit, bestowing life unto life
moving in All.
You are the root of all creatures,
washing away all impurity,
scouring guilt,
healing their wounds.
Thus you are luminous and praiseworthy,
You are our true Life,
awakening, and re-awakening all that is
from its ancient sleep.

O vis Aeternitatis

Power of Eternity
you who ordered all things in your heart,
through your Word all things are created just as you willed,
and your very Word
calls forth flesh
in the shape
which was drawn from Adam.
Power of Eternity
Power of Eternity.

She may be 35th as St. John of Avila seems poised to be next.

What does being declared a Doctor of the Church do for a saint?

What does being declared a Doctor of the Church do for a saint?
I think it’s more for us than for the saint. 😉

It basically lifts them up as models who contributed to the thought and life of the Church in a major way.
