Benedict XVI Officially Declares Hildegard of Bingen a Saint

Even though Hildegard of Bingen was already on the list of Catholic saints, she had not been officially canonized. So to remove all doubt, Benedict XVI extended the liturgical cult of St. Hildegard of Bingen, to the Universal Church, which automatically inscribes her in the catalogue of saints.

This is great news! And it’s about time! 😛

Just wondering … has her canonization “process” been the longest? She died in 1179, so that’s 833 years.

Yes! Apparently she is going to be made a Doctor of the Church later on this very year, in October or November I believe.

What an incredible canonization process this has been - I think that her journey from sainthood and now to eventually being declared the 34th Doctor of the Church has been unique in Church history.
 
To celebrate, here is some of her timeless musical compositions and lyrics. Saint Hildegard said that in her music she was trying to imitate the singing of the angels that God had revealed to her. Enjoy!

She may be 35th as St. John of Avila seems poised to be next.

I think it’s more for us than for the saint. 😉

It basically lifts them up as models who contributed to the thought and life of the Church in a major way.
