Benefits to Communion on tongue

I receive on the tongue, partly because it is the normative way to receive and partly because it makes it more intentional for me. I can mindlessly stuff food in my mouth all day long, but at my age it is much rarer that I allow someone else to place food directly into my mouth.

That anyone (or everyone!) else chooses to receive in the hand bothers me not a bit.

But as a postscript: It does make me sad that the precious blood is so infrequently offered by intinction at Roman Rite liturgies in my area. In order to allow (I am told) communicants the option of an indulged practice, a method of administration that is always and everywhere valid is completely eliminated? 🤷‍♂️

Stress and anxiety are smoke of the devil. Trust in Jesus. I have seen people drop the Host from out of their mouth and their hand. Jesus did not smote the Church and it’s congregation for this. And I trust Jesus never will.

Jesus I trust in you.

We become so absorbed in ‘how’. To do Mass, ‘how’ to pray, ‘how’ to receive, ‘how’ to hold our hands

We forget to Worship God.

Intinction is not always allowed, everywhere. In fact, our Bishop has pretty much forbidden the practice, except for rare circumstances.

It’s not my place to negotiate between your (nor anyone’s) bishop and Redemptionis Sacramentum #103

Yes! I also recently began receiving Communion on the tongue, and I do feel it’s beneficial. I was terrified the first time and watched several YouTube videos first. Now I can’t go back.

I have read parish bulletins that says people who wish to receive on the tongue of course need to be respected but they also need to be sensitive to the people who take a different view and hence those who wish to receive on the tongue are encouraged to line up at the back for hygienic reasons.
A view I agree with totally. As long as you line up at the back I have no problems.

Really? Those poor people who were in church at the Easter Vigil can’t have been pleased with me then, I was about sixth in line to receive first with the other new Catholics, and half of us received on the tongue.

I take communion in the hand, primarily because I’ve seen quite a few missed attempts for the priest or minister to aim correctly doing communion on the tongue.

I’ve seen arguments that COTT is better than CITH because our hands might be “dirty”. So wash them before Mass. And if you mean “spiritually dirty”, then all I can say is that I’m pretty sure I’ve committed more sins with my tongue than with my hands.

Also, a poster above mentioned using a “cupping motion”. I don’t think this is the recommended method for “in the hand.” Unless a physical handicap is involved the hands are outstretched, and placed one above the other with the dominant hand on the bottom. The host is placed on the non dominant hand, and then picked up by the dominant hand and placed in the mouth. My apologies if I misunderstood that post.

I probably used the wrong words. What you described is precisely the motion I have trouble with.

Thanks for the clarification.

I’ve witnessed some attempts to do a cupping motion all in one hand, and that doesn’t seem to work well.

It is good that we have more than one option!

Father C explained communion in the hand as right hand laid open over open left hand, host placed in palm, hands raised to mouth and host eaten from palm directly, rather than plucked from the right with the left and eaten that way. Though I see it done both ways.

When I was a kid you received communion on the tongue. That was the only option. When I came back to the church a few years ago as an old man I was shocked that people received in the hand and it took me a while to feel comfortable doing that. One day after receiving communion in the hand I noticed that there were crumbs from the host on my palms. I licked the crumbs from my palm and now I only receive on my tongue.

We do left hand placed over right hand. You guys must do it backwards living in another hemisphere! 👼

I was taught dominant hand underneath because that is the one you then use to bring the host to your mouth. There was no correct hand to use. It depended whether you were right handed or left handed.

Yes really. That was the instruction from the parish priest.
In your case it’s different because there is no choice and I don’t have a problem with that.
It’s all about the heart in Christianity.
So in an ordinary mass when one has a choice to go to the back of the queue, why wouldn’t you?
