Bernie Sanders said Pope Francis is a socialist like himself in an interview with a Catholic television network set to air Tuesday. “I think what the pope has done, in a very bold way… is raise the issue of the worship of money, the idolatry of money, and to say maybe that’s not what human life should be about,” Sanders told Salt + Light network. “That is a very, very radical critique of the hyper-capitalist system, world system, that we’re living in today.” Sanders was asked if he considers Francis to be a socialist and answered, “Yes.” Sanders explained: “So few should not have so much, and I think that’s what the pope is talking about.”

I can hardly believe how many inflaming, per how we perceive them, stories are coming out in the last 7 days and this is another. These news stories from the Zika virus and so on are getting people talking but not always for the good!

The Bernt man Sanders is trying to piggy pack off of the media frenzy about the Pope and Trump for his own campaign glory. Simple.

Who HONESTLY trusts the media about the Pope anymore???

OP your religion says “Converting to Judaism”. From what, I am curious? Catholicism or something else?
At any rate, I wonder what your intention posting this provocative thread was? 🤷
 
Bernie is not the first person to call the Pope a socialist.
 
The Pope is doing something right when the world attacks him so often.

See, Bernie is himself a socialist.

And with the media frenzy about the Pope attacking Trump, Sanders wanted to make himself look good by basically saying “Yeah I’m just like the Pope. I’m cool. Vote for me”

Its all attention getting.

Whether praising or attacking, to say the Pope is a socialist is DEAD WRONG.
 
Bernie needs to realize that the Pope doesn’t stand with him regarding a few important social issue. 😃

In all honesty, who gets to decide who has too much?

I can promise you that Bernie Sanders has more and lives better than at least the bottom one-half of the world. Who is he to decide who has “so much?”
 
Look, Bernie isn’t really a socialist. Not really. Not a capital-S, Das Kapital-spouting, nationalize the means of production Socialist. He’s more of what you’d call a social democrat (Bernie likes the phrase “democratic socialist.” Whatever.)

Given that, Bernie probably isn’t far off the mark if he says that the Pope is a socialist. Anyone remember Pope Benedict saying that social democracy seemed like the best form of government?

I really do think it’s the form of state organization that’s most in keeping with Catholic social teaching. You know, the universal destination of goods, the preferential option for the poor, all that.
 
Yeah, but Sanders is still more or less correct. The Pope is very critical of capitalism, as befits any Christian. Jesus Christ may well have been opposed to the very concept of money itself, so it’s a given that at the very least He would be opposed to the obscene excesses, inequalities and predatory nature of modern Western economics. If Sanders wasn’t Pro Choice he’d be the best candidate. Which, considering the current crop, is plain as day. As I see it, anyway.

When a capitalist calls Catholic Social Teaching socialism, he is mistaken. You are talking about distributism. And I can prove distributism isnt socialism, because socialists think that distributism is capitalism.

Anyways, yes, recent popes(Leo XIII and onward) are NOT capitalists. They are distributists. Really they are just CATHOLICS so they believe in charity.

But using the Pope’s authority to boost your campaign which supports abortion and other sins is abominable.
 
I think that Bernie has a correct assessment. He and the pope share the same economic worldview.

I’m sure Bernie realizes this. He went to Liberty University, founded by the late Jerry Falwell, and said right off the bat we disagree on women’s rights and SSM. But that he believes from the bottom of his heart that it is vitally important for those who hold different views to be able to engage in civil discourse.

And then suggested there are other issues out there that are of enormous consequence to our country and in fact to the entire world.

He quoted Scripture. Spoke of injustice. The affects of growing income disparity. And spoke on morality and poverty, homelessness, the sick. Spoke on family values.

He spoke about how this country has sufficient amounts of money to put more people in jail than any other country on earth. But apparently we do not have enough money to provide jobs and education.

He also spoke of the words of Pope Francis on which he agrees.

Rev. Thomas Rosica, who assists the Vatican press office and is the CEO of Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation is the one who said people are saying Pope Francis is a socialist and he’s the one who asked Bernie if he thinks Pope Francis is a socialist. Bernie simply answered his question.

Salt and Light is the one who agreed to or sought out the interview. They could’ve had Marco Rubio or someone more in line with Catholic teaching, but they went with Bernie. You can’t accuse Bernie of using Pope Francis to boost his campaign.

There are also some economic worldviews that Bernie and the Koch brothers share, like the problem of corporate welfare.
