I loved the short-run HBO series, The Newsroom. Another Sorkin project.

Yep. I own every episode.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip was a brilliant single season show.

I agree. Sometimes the networks allow the ratings to undo a potentially great program.
Remember NBC let go of Star Trek just when it was developing a great following of fans. What a mistake that was. šŸ˜€

Part of that was because the company being used to set ratings didnā€™t have a good cross-sample. They totally ignored groups like new parents who were staying home on Friday nights and so on.

One of the great lines from that showā€¦

June Cleaver: Well Beaver donā€™t you want your grandmother to see how tall youā€™ve gotten?

The Beave: Gee mom canā€™t she just look at the markings on the wall?

True, true.
I remember back when I was in college. Star Trek had been off the air for several years, but it was like a cult following in the dormatory. Every evening, the TV room in the dorm was jammed with students to watch Star Trek reruns.

And there was a show more recently, called ā€œMen Of a Certain Age,ā€ about four guys reaching middle-age. They kept moving it around, so you couldnā€™t find when it was on. But I kept up with it. It was axed, even though there were many groups begging for it to be saved, even if moved to a different station. I really liked that show.

Yes! And then there was ā€œFireflyā€ which Fox seemed determined to fail before it was even broadcast. They started by showing the episodes out of order: instead of starting with the two-part pilot, the started with episode 3.

The networks only carry about shows that get instant ratings. It is too bad there is no cable network interested in catching some of these castoffs.
I must admit that I never saw Men Of A Certain Age. But I guess it was moved around so much that I did not know when it was on.
One problem I have current is that there three network shows I like. They all are on at the same timeā€¦The Rookie, NCIS-New Orleans, and New Amsterdam. Good think they make VCRs. šŸ˜€

I liked Star Trek, MASH, Home Improvement, All In The Family, Seinfeld, and Every body love Raymond. Lately I am into The Walking Dead. Some High school teachers are incorporating The Walking Dead into their curriculum. It has variations of survival philosophies.

I would like to watch Game of Thrones but our cable bill is too high for now.

I like HBO, but I have never been able to get into the Game of Thrones stuff.

what is weird is we have family friends from England (they come over to the States about twice a year for an extended holiday from their farm) who donā€™t really like British programs (apparently they like garbage American shows like NCISā€”I am embarrassed they even show that overseas ), however, my mother says most of the shows she watches nowadays are British.

Black Mirror is an excellent modern British program, btw. It is the best show of itā€™s genre since ā€œThe Twilight Zoneā€. The episodes ā€œWhite Christmasā€ and ā€œThe USS Callisterā€, for example, are incredible.

I havenā€™t watched that yet but I bet it is good. Charlie Brooker is like a 21st century Rod Serling.

When I first heard about it, I remembered these cool books I used to read as a kid called ā€œChoose Your Own Adventureā€. Well the publisher of those books actually sued over Bandersnatch. Apparently they are even referenced in it as the inspiration.
