For the most part EWTn’s shows are excellent.

However there are a few programs like the pop-style Divine Mercy
and some of the children programming that are cheesy.

I love:

Life on the Rock
The World Over
Journey Home
Web of Faith
Fr. Mitch and Fr. Corapi
Daily Mass
Mother Angelica

👍
I disagree w/ you those children’s programs are wonderful…and as for the Divine Mercy in song…that really lifts my heart…I do have to admit that I didn’t care for it at first but it caught on and I purchased the CD & play it for my CCD Class as a meditation, etc. I even purchase the videos of the kid’s programs and my 7th graders love them…they are such great teaching tools for myself as well and I’m 60 years old!

BEST: Fr. Corapi on the Catechism (or anything else!!), Fr. Benedict Groeschel

LEAST FAVORITE: The Holy Rosary with Mother Angelica and the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration. Please let me explain . . . I LOVE praying the Holy Rosary, adoration of the Holy Eucharist, and the Poor Clares life of prayer but there is something about the way all those female voices sound on TV (kind of like they’re falling asleep or zombies). It even scares my cat!

I would have to agree about the rosary recitation. I get a sound in my head like the voices are in an echo chamber or it sounds like alien voices from a bad B movie from the 1950’s.
I do not wish to knock Mother and her Sisters, but some audio advancments are needed here.
But you have to know this, I am sure when Halloween comes around, just pipe this outside and your house would be very scary. Or play it loud to reduce crime!

I like just about everything on EWTN. Some of the music shows aren’t so great , esp. the contemporary pop-type stuff. I very much like the Chesterton show and I love the theme music for it - (I’m a tuba player).

Please con$ider helping them out. They do so much for us.

My favorite by far is Life on the Rock…singing “Fa-ather Mitch Pa-acwa” to the tune of Dona Nobis Pacem, I can’t get it out of my head! :whacky:
I hate to criticize, and I know she’s a wonderful person without whom there would be no EWTN, but Mother Angelica has always grated on me, and I have a hard time watching anything she’s been in. (It sounds a lot meaner than I intend it to be!!!) :crying:

If you ever have the opportunity to hear Fr. Pacwa at a conference DO NOT MISS IT. He is 100x better in person.

Some have suggested that Catholic Answers get on television, maybe with a game show like “Jeopardy.”

So I was thinking …

How about “Catholics in Jeopardy”? As soon as taping ends, the top winner goes straight to heaven, the runners-up go to purgatory, and the player who scores lowest goes … well, you know.

Or maybe “Get Out of Jail Free.” Prizes for correct answers are partial indulgences, with “more days off” for tougher questions. The grand prize is a plenary indulgence.

Or maybe “Apologetics Dinner for Two.” The winner of this game gets to have a dinner with me. The runner-up gets two dinners with me.

This thread is awesome! I have openly laughed at some of the responses, and I love to see others’ ideas.

I too am so thankful that EWTN exists. I love most of the programming.

Favourites: Oh! Too many to list! Maybe Life on the Rock, the Journey Home, anything w/ Fr. Pacwa, the Divine Mercy in Song (the new one – ooh is that good).

Un-favourites: Anything at 3am in spanish. I don’t speak spanish, see.

Comments: In the last 6 years, I have moved 3 times, gotten married, had 2 kids, and undergone a couple of other major life changes. That said, I will say that it has become more and more apparent to me that EWTN does an AWESOME job of putting out programming that suits a wide array of audiences. (I also compliment them on having such a polished, professional appearance.) Examples:
  1. Mass. I used to turn this off. <If I’m not there in person, BORING!> Now my dh, a convert of 6 years from a potpourri of protestant denom’s LOVES Mass and often chooses it over Fox News or whatevers on the history <read: revisionist history> or discovery channels. For him, that’s saying a lot.
  2. The Rosary. Again, I’m not saying it along, so ::flip:: on comes another channel … UNTIL I had children, who adore the EWTN Rosary. They love the whole chant thing and stare at it, enraptured in the prayer. They are toddlers, 2 and 1. They also like the diving mercy chaplet for the same reason. I actually have grown in appreciation for this b/c I can have it on while ironing or doing laundry – it fills the house w/ a pleasant, holy sound.
  3. I too always hated the kids’ stuff, like Faith Factory, Angel Force, and the Story Keepers (which is a cartoon). My toddler not only LOVES to watch it, he repeats back things he’s seen on it. For example, Mrs. Smith just did a show on “what is a mystery?” I happened to record it. When I was fast-forwarding through it to get to something else, the 2 1/2 year old boy saw Mrs. Smith in the fast forward and said, “Mystewy show, Mama! I wanna watch about Mystewy!” How bout them apples?
  4. Dh has recorded and rewatched dozens of shows, from Scott Hahn to “The Church in Time.” He is trying to take the crash test in self-catechesis and this is his fav. method.
  5. I too find Bob and Penny Lord on “Super Saints” really grating. Again, dh loves it, esp for the information. He thinks they make up in sincerity and humility what they lack in polished stage presence and script writing. Ugh, I need polished.
  6. A dear friend of mine is homebound, and she faithfully watches Mass daily since she can no longer attend her home parish (she cannot drive). I guess we should be grateful that she has a way of hearing the Gospel and at least making a spiritual communion in that context.
As for entertainment, I dunno, I like the heady stuff, but probably would be interested in a Catholic version of Wheel of Fortune or Survivor. How about Catholic extreme sports?

Karl, I think "Who Wants to Be an Apologetist’ should be made into a TV game show, and market it to EWTN.
Or has Catholic Answers ever thought about producing a TV program. Just start with one and see what happens. At least you would know that everyone here at the Forums would be watching! 🙂

I have to share this really funny story with you all. We don’t have TV at our house, but I do get to watch on some mornings at my cleaning jobs. When Mother Angelica was on, I faithfully watched her. I just loved her sense of humor and her cheerfulness! She really told it like it is. Anyway, one day while I had the TV blasting (I was in the other room dusting) the homeowner came home unexpectedly. This was when Mother Angelica had had her stroke and was having trouble speaking. She was sluring her words and at the same time trying to take a sip of water through a straw. I was used to seeing her like this from previous episodes, but I can image what my client must have thought. He looked over at me, then back to the TV and then back at me again with a look of confusion on his face. I just looked at him and yelled over. “I LOVE MOTHER ANGELICA”. He just replied. “whatever” and then left. So I guess my favorite EWTN show has to be Mother Angelica. I truly do love her!

Best: The Journey Home

Worst: GK Chesterton, Divine Mercy
I listen to EWTN Radio much more than I watch the TV Network. I love The Journey Home (Marcus Grodi), Life on the Rock (Fr. Francis Mary), and anything Fr. Benedict Groeschel is doing. The most mundane to me are the episodes where Mother Angelica is talking about items from the Catalogue, and the two priests reading eMail and discussing same.

Robert,
I’m a tuba player as well.

I love Father Corapi and Bishop Fulton Sheen!!

My 10-year old refuses to watch the shows geared for children-I guess he’s too old for the way the hosts speak. I think that EWTN would do well to have a regular time each night for religious movies, such as “Song of Bernadette”, the story of Fatima, and so forth. It would make turning off the cartoons a little easier if there was something of quality for the kiddies to watch.
Thank God for Mother Angelica. I currently cannot get EWTN on my cable system, (I nag them constantly) but I can stream it live on the internet. And to think I hated computers! 😃

I’m glad to see this thread!
My channel line-up just added EWTN and I’ve been watching at random, trying to find some good shows. The history one was a little dull, but great accompaniment to the ironing! I will make a point to see The Journey Home and Life on the Rock, since several posts mention those.

Most of what I see on ETWN Television and listen to one ETWN shortwave radio via the internet is excellent.

One thing I turn off is the auction rosary that appeared on television occassionally in the evenings. I find rapid rosaries non-conductive to prayer and meditation.

best: Threshold of Hope with Fr Mitch

worst: Church Militant? with Barbara McGuien.

Least favorite is Mother Angelica. Her delivery grates on me because she sounds like she’s talking just to hear her own voice. I also get irritated hearing her give advice on marriage. What would someone who’s never been married know? She doesn’t have a clue what being married is like.

Hey now, Mother Angelica is a very good speaker and she has great advice on marrige. Just because she hasn’t been married doesn’t mean that she can’t give advice. The pope isn’t having sex but he wrote the Theology of the Body outlining Human Sexuality and the Divine plan. Don’t be so critical of mother angelica she is a sweet woman!

I personaly like Archbishop Fulton Sheen’s reruns that they play, and the pope’s aduencies and well everything…

My favorite EWTN programs are:
  • The Journey Home with Marcus Grodi
  • The World Over with Raymond Arroyo
  • The Web of Faith with Fathers Levis & Trigilio
  • Fr. Corapi’s excellent series on the Catechism
  • Living His Life Abundantly with Johnnette Benkovic, and
  • Anything with Fr. Groeschel

I used to dislike that ‘Power Saints’ show with the old couple that looks like their home movies taken on vacation. But now, I kinda like it in a wierd :whacky: sorta way.

By far my favorites are ‘The World Over’, ‘Life on the Rock’ and anything Fr. Corapi does. He da man!
SUPER SAINTS!!! My wife cannot stand this show … I LOVE it BECAUSE of the homemade quality of it. Last night was really good because it was a decent tour of Catholic sites in Rome.

My favorite things about SUPER SAINTS are …
  1. folks getting in the way of the shots and the comments they make about them “Hasn’t that guy been by here several times?”
  2. zooming in on postcards of famous places to save the cost of actual trips to those places
  3. close-ups of not so incorrupt saints, body part relics and the like
  4. zooming in and re-framing right as the zoom is clipping the right side of Penny Lord off screen.
  5. The freeze shots on altars, buildings and other inanimate objects right before cutting to the next scene
  6. One time they got somewhere and the building was locked so they stood outside and talked about it.
I can think of ONE improvement. A couple of kids saying SUPER SAINTS, SUPER SAINTS and playing air guitar while the title comes in at the beginning. My wife does that every time it comes on.

I joke about this. It is actually one of the most endearing programs on EWTN. They had a vision and just went out and did it. I think that says a lot. Many folks try to wait until things are too perfect before they do what God is calling them to do. What we have here with Super Saints is a show you cannot help but loving and the message comes through loud and clear.
