A couple more theme songs I loved as an animal-loving child. I especially liked the tuba part at the end when Ben walks.

I laughed many years later when The Simpsons satirized both of these shows, although I don’t think anyone born after about 1968 got the jokes. I remember having to explain the Gentle Ben Simpsons satire skit to some young whippersnapper on a Simpsons chat thread.

I just remembered one that I had forgotten to add earlier, which is ABC’s Wide World of Sports. It was inspirational for me. My favorite part is “the thrill of victory” contrasted with “the agony of defeat”. When the skier takes the dramatic tumble, I hurt for him and hoped he wasn’t hurt too badly.

Forgive me if someone has already mentioned it.

The US went through a period in the 1960s when a guy named Ivan Tors was doing a lot of animal shows. He did Flipper and Gentle Ben and Daktari. It’s pretty fascinating to read about the animal actors on his shows. Some of them had pretty good lives despite being somewhat mistreated (I think they would pull the teeth on the bears for example) and others of them met more miserable fates. Several bears played Gentle Ben but the main one (named Bruno) had many adventures such as surviving being washed away in a flood and co-starring in a movie with Paul Newman.

The chimpanzee on Daktari named “Judy” was the main focus of the show and she ended up being stuck in some crummy, obscure zoo when she got old and mean. I hate to say this but I wasn’t big on Daktari show because I didn’t particularly like chimps.

I believe the little boy in ‘Gentle Ben’ was Ron Howard’s less famous brother in real life, if I remember correctly.

Yes, it was Ron’s brother, and their father Rance Howard also had a small part on the show (He appeared in 25 episodes as a neighbor) and also as a bad guy in the pilot film. The father was always around keeping an eye on his son, he was a really good dad by all accounts.

Jim McKay (a Catholic - 16 years of Catholic education; he was married for almost 60 years to the same woman).
I wasn’t aware of this. That sounds like a good topic for a new thread, in my opinion, if it’s never been done before — to list all the famous Catholic actors, TV personalities, athletes, and other household names who take their faith seriously that many people in society may not know are Catholics.

Make sure you include Ennio Morricone, who just passed away this month. He was primarily known for his film scores, so he’s off topic for this thread, but he composed many iconic scores.

Reports indicate he died “in the comfort of the [Catholic] faith”. National Catholic Register ran a couple of articles.
