Beto O’Rourke on Third-Trimester Abortions: Should be Decision the Woman Makes

It seems to me that in situations later in pregnancy, a C-section would be the alternative to an abortion. The baby may die either way, but there is a huge difference between caring for dying babies and just killing them off very painfully.
In the case of neonates with immediate terminal conditions, I think that “caring” vs. “killing them off very painfully” is a false dilemma. But that issue is mot. The question is: who will or will to be permitted to decide what is the most merciful and caring course of action.

Right. Why don’t we do away with laws altogether and let everyone decide what the most caring and merciful thing in any situation is to do?

Sure, let a traumatized mother who knows very little about medical sciencd, who has been told all her life by society that an unborn baby is “not really human,” and who is being told who knows what by her doctors and probably not even offered the option of a C-section make the decision.

Because we seek to maintain public order and rights that we, as a self-govnering people agree on.
let a traumatized mother who knows very little about medical science, who has been told
That is an interesting scenario, but is it one that is fair to the people who have been in the situation that we have been discussing?

You are in favor of legal abortion because everyone else is?
I am not in favor of abortion at all.

I am in favor of spreading the culture of life in an affirming way, rather than one than an alienating one. That begins with understanding why decent people see this issue differently, think the way that they do, rather than just polemically dismissing them.

But I also think it true that if people have some heightened sense that abortions performed on women who are 6, 7, 8 months pregnant are somehow worse than those at earlier stages, they will never see abortions at those earlier stages as equally bad
Who said abortion in the third trimester was worse?
I need a direct quote.
Thanks

You claimed making abortion illegal would not be a good thing because the majority are in support of it.
I am sorry that we do not seem to be able to communicate with one another.

I am not in favor of abortion at all.
I am in favor of finding a path that is effective in leading us to turn away from abortion.
I do not believe that a path of forcing somehow through the government a minority opinion that compels actions that are not supported by the people is an effective one.
I also don’t believe that an effective path can be found unless there is some realization of the difficulty, in light of human weakness,of the challenge we face, and the humanity, however weakened, of those who have different perspectives.

You do not believe this path involves legal protection of the unborn?
When it is the will of the people to have thoughtful legal protections, yes.
When we have wedge issue polemics aimed at dividing the electorate and, realistically, nothing more, no.

In much the same way slavery was made illegal. Or segregation.
I have already touched on the salient distinction between abortion and the slavery issue above.
Again, it does not seem that we are communicating, and I am getting the blue “consider replying…” notification.

That is not the question at all.

The question is, the legal need to transfer these born-alive babies to the hospital instead of passively (or in some cases actively) killing them.

Let’s together AFFIRM the NEED legalky to transfer any babies born alive to a hospital asap so they get the care they need.

That seems affirming enough as a start for them. Right?

Beto O’Rourke is pro-abortion because he’s a Democrat, and one can’t get the nomination of that party unless he’s pro-abortion. Some in the Dem party have swung further into infanticide of those already born. Right now, the acceptable infanticide is “passive”. They don’t favor allowing the “doctors” to behead the babies after birth (only just before) they just let them die for lack of medical attention. Maybe O’Rourke really believes in that, and maybe he doesn’t, but if he’s elected, he’ll be all in for it. But then, so will the presently known Dem presidential hopefuls.

Excellent summation.

Sorry, but if you want to get somewhere on this issue that is the question that has to be confronted.
do YOU think pre-born persons are persons?
I accept the teaching of the Church on this matter. But not everyone in the nation is Catholic. And among good people there are different perspectives on this matter. A real path forward must take that reality into account.

Can you at least AFFIRM the NEED legally for abortionists to transfer any babies born alive to a hospital asap so the babies get the life-saving care they need??

This is a proverbial moral lay up.

You can just come out with straight-up talk and AFFIRM this right? After all, you are pro-life. (This is an easy one).

A. Yes Cathoholic. I affirm that need.

B. No Cathoholic. I refuse to assert a legal need for abortionists to transfer born suffering helpless little babies to a nearby hospital for necessary care.

C. Well Cathoholic. It is like this . . . and that . . . . and of course the other thing . . .
