Thanks to Arizona Mike who posted this by then Cardinal Bergoglio:
We hope that legislators, heads of government, and health professionals, conscious of the dignity of human life and of the rootedness of the family in our peoples, will defend and protect it from the abominable crimes of abortion and euthanasia; that is their responsibility. Hence, in response to government laws and provisions that are unjust in the light of faith and reason, conscientious objection should be encouraged. We must adhere to “eucharistic coherence,” that is, be conscious that they cannot receive holy communion and at the same time act with deeds or words against the commandments, particularly when abortion, euthanasia, and other grave crimes against life and family are encouraged. This responsibility weighs particularly over legislators, heads of governments, and health professionals.

Not their confession. That is always a private matter. But their change of attitude toward abortion and homosexual “marriage”, yes. However, I wouldn’t want to see politicians taking over this occasion for their press conferences.
Yes, this is what I mean.

again, not for you to decide.
Actually canon law requires it. But, yes, Church leaders decide whether to follow it. Not sure why they would want to not follow it in these circumstances, but considering the number of politiicians that are allowed to receive communion, it wouldn’t surprise me. Hopefully, the Pope will fix that once and for all.

I think we’re being given a great chance here to pray for these people who have wandered so far from home. Personally, I don’t like either Biden or Pelosi - but we have to remember that Christ calls us to love our enemies, and to pray for those who persecute us. It would be right and just for them to be refused the Eucharist - but we shouldn’t crow over it and see it as a victory. It would be a public illustration of the fact that here are two souls in deep need of healing and prayer, teetering on the edge of the pit. Refusal of the Sacraments and Excommunication should make us weep for the person, not shout for joy, because they have taken themselves so far away from God. Please pray for these souls who seem determined to wander in darkness.
Thank you for these wise words. Yes, I will continue to pray for them.

Earlier, on another (very similar) thread, I posted…
It is my hope that soon their eyes will open to and accept the truth. That although, upon such realization, their grief will be great, their hearts will change so beautifully and they will heal. That they will be penitent, seeking mercy and forgiveness, and upon coming home to faith will be so filled and made new again by the Holy Spirit, that henceforth, they will carry the message of Christ in their every thought, word & deed.

From what I’ve read about our new papa, I can see Biden and Pelosi being briefed in advance, and if they present themselves, Pope Francis smiling and speaking kindly to them but refusing to give them the Eucharist.

The media would have a field day with it, but what the heck… start the pontificate with a bang!! 👍

Or it could be like Kennedy’s funeral where the cameras were instructed not to focus on those receiving. Just saying.

I am not a fan of reality TV, but this one might be worth keeping up with. I foresee Pope Francis making a statement hear, just not sure which one.🤷

This is a state visit. People were chosen in order of precedence from the executive and legislative branches. That they are Catholic is not the point. They don’t necessarily need to be. Now I agree that since they are Catholic but not in good standing, they should have the sense to not present themselves for communion - or go to confession ahead of time!
How do you know that they are not ‘in good standing’?
Isn’t that up to the Lord to decide, and not someone on an internet forum…whether or not they go to Confession/Reconciliation is really between them and God and their priest, not us. In my opinion, at least.

It is not up to you to decide, now is it? The US of A is not a theocracy. Keep that in mind.🤷
I realize that this is not a theocracy but I also realize that Vatican City is a religious state. So, as a representation being sent to the Holy See, I think that the U.S. should at least be cordial enough to send someone of like mind and who don’t differ so greatly in viewpoint as Pelosi and Biden to the Vatican. It is obvious that the Obama Administration chose those two because they are “Catholic”

Not good enough. Since they are public dissenters, they must also make their confession public.
Really? Sez WHO? I’ve never heard of a public confession, and I don’t think any priest is likely to participate in such a thing.

Ryan and Santorum can buy a ticket and go, they are free to do so.
I realize they are free to do so but I really think that if the US wants to make an impression on the new Holy Father then maybe the nation should send some good Catholics like Santorum and Ryan instead of non-practicing Catholics not in communion with the church.

Well, of course he did, and Biden is the second in command to the President, and Pelosi was Speaker of the House which meant that she was, at one time, the third in command. I’m sure that the Obama could have sent Boehner but I don’t think that he is Catholic and right now he’s not dispensable because there are big issues in the House. I’m glad that he sent such distinguished Americans to represent him at such a marvelous event, it’s a once in a lifetime experience and they’ll be fine.
I would never presume to comment on the state of their souls because that’s NOT for me to say, counting the sins of a fellow traveler is the height of hubris and arrogance, HOWEVER, I will say that their faith will likely be enhanced by such a wonderful experience and they’ll be forever grateful that they ‘got to go’, thanks to President Obama.

I’m a big fan of reality TV and you’re probably right, this Pope is very gentle, understanding and he strives to be a decent man, I have a good feeling about him. I don’t think that he’ll attempt to publicly disgrace anyone nor will he insult our representatives, just won’t happen. I could be wrong but there is something very endearing about this man.

They really should not be going. Even they must have some form of morals and know that this is wrong for them to go representing this nation at the inauguration mass of this great Pope. They are Catholics and I believe that is why the Obama administration chose them to go to the Vatican. Even though there are many other great representatives of this nation that could have gone and that are practicing Catholics, this government should have been smart enough to say no to Pelosi and Biden who are very anti-Catholic in their viewpoints and morals.
He sent the highest level politicians…that are Catholic, should he have sent Ryan, a loser? Should he have sent Santorum, another loser? That would have been rude, tho I don’t think that anyone would have noticed. It’s possible, and in fact likely that Obama has no idea what the status of their souls are, which is good because it’s none of his business anyway. They profess to be Catholic, it’s good enough for him and for me. (LOL, as if they care one or other about you OR me!!)

I’m just sayin’ public sinners would do well to think twice before presenting themselves in front of him to receive Our holy Lord.

And yes, public sin requires a public confession (little c) to repair the scandal caused by the Catholic who proclaims publicly that evil is good. The correction needs to be public for the sake of the ongoing formation of the consciences of the faithful. This is just common sense.

But the ‘common sense’ is not something scriptural, or taught by the Church. With that said, correction should be evident in public figures. It’s not ours to demand public penance, or confession.
