Another rumor Catholics believe Purgatory is a place where flames of fire burn you in agonizing pain until you are cleansed of your sins.
What makes you believe this is false?
and Catholic believe a priest is forgiving us of our sin, not God. The priest gets to decide if we are forgiven or not.
A priest can withhold absolution: “what you bind on Earth shall be bound in Heaven.”

@JanR So why baptize infants at all?
Because, if the parents are able to, and if the baby lives long enough to be baptized, it’s required to remove original sin. BUT, if the baby dies before the parents can get him or her baptized, or if the parents simply fail to do so and the baby dies, God isn’t going to punish the little baby. He can grant dispensations to anyone He chooses to.

Now, if the parents could have baptized the dead infant but neglected or refused to do so, that’s on the parents.

On the other hand, if the parents had every intention of baptizing the baby as soon as possible, and were prevented from doing so in time, they would be blameless, too, just like the little baby.

God is fair. He is the fairest judge we shall ever appear before. If earthly judges were as fair as God is, there would be no injustice in the world.

@JanR Why remove original sin if an infant is guaranteed Heaven nevertheless?

Like I said, I’m not going to argue here over a belief that Catholics aren’t required to have and that I don’t have, and that also is not on topic for the thread. If this topic is important to you, feel free to make a new thread - or you can read the many old threads we already have on this.

Same response as above that I made to hope.

Some Catholics believe this. We honestly have no idea what goes on in Purgatory so at most this sort of thing is speculation and perhaps approved private revelation, which we are likewise not required to believe and may not be the absolute truth.

Fr. Bernhard Groeschel on the other hand teaches children that Purgatory is pleasant.
And again we have plenty of past threads on all of this.

I’ve never understood the aversion to Limbo. Makes perfect sense to me.

I don’t believe it; but that being said, I also don’t have a problem if you do. This is something that could be very much debated by reasonable men.

The different replies that I’ve gotten about what exactly Purgatory is… so I doubt the one that is true will allow God’s children to suffer in agonizing pain, then what would be the difference between Purgatory and Hell?

Purgatory is suppose to be a purification that allows us to be cleaned so we can enter heaven, not a punishment, atleast that’s what I was told.

Yes but it’s still God doing the forgivning.

Well there you go, thank you. 🙂

Yeah, because apparently they had a “Trinity” a “virgin birth” a “resurrection” and basically all the same morals as Christians doncha know?

I am not sure that it doesn’t belong as part of the lies about Catholics. If it is a departure than you must take responsibility for it as I only responded to your post.

I was taught pre-Vatican II about Limbo of unbaptized babies but not that only Catholic can get into heaven. At least, not that way. What I was taught was that outside the Catholic Church there is no salvation. It is a much misunderstood teaching. I was also taught “All are bound to belong to the Church, and he who knows the Church to be the true Church and remains out of it cannot be saved.”
845-846 in the Catechism explains what is meant.

We really don’t know what we’ll experience in Purgatory, only that it will be a cleansing and purification of some sort – and that may not be easy.

Purgatory is temporal punishment:
That’s a shame. ☹️
Actually not at all. It is an occasion of joy.

We undergo plenty of temporal punishment, cleansing and purification here on Earth. We can, in fact, avoid much of what Purgatory has in store for us if we choose to undergo it here while alive. Which is easier? We don’t know, but at least we can do it voluntarily in this life, rather than the involuntary character of Purgatory before entering Heaven.

It is said that those who enter Purgatory will experience pain tinged with joy, because they will immediately discern that they are not condemned to Hell, but destined for Heaven. This would stand to reason, so I choose to believe it. Surely the souls suffering in Purgatory (The Church Suffering, as we call them) can feel our fervent prayers as we work to free them from these final bonds to sin and death.
