Bikinis are immodest - why exactly?

I am a married woman aged 35, in Italy. A very different culture, which interestingly is shifting towards greater modesty… or example, topless sunbathing was commonplace ten-fifteen years ago but now has nearly disappeared from most beaches.

I think that modesty depends on the context. A swimsuit (any swimsuit) is OK on the beach but would definitely be not on in the workplace or while shopping for groceries; an evening dress is OK at a ball but not at a matinee at the theatre; and so on. If a woman has good taste and common sense, she will not be felt out ofplace by either the women or the men who are around her, and the thoughts elicited in the men will be more linked to the general occasion than to any particular woman.

Needless to say, one should NOT be pushed by his/her environment, or by peer pressure or fashio, to do things that are morally wrong; but I think that in most normal contexts (parties, beach, theatre) even revealing clothes do not cause much of a stir in men’s minds, precisely because they are the norm. Sure enough they will get mildly aroused, but that’s about it - normal and natural and with no significant consequences.

On the beach, I do wear bikinis - not the very revealing types that are more for teenage girls and probably mre modest than most on these beaches, but still bikinis. Some of my evening dresses are a bit revealing - with the ones that are backless I can’t wear a bra underneath but obviously they are not in any way see-through. I wear high heel sandals but no make up. I am no more immodest than most other women I know, actually more modest than most.

As far as my intensions are concerned, I always try to look beautiful, partly because my husband likes it, partly because it makes me feel self-confident. I know that men (including other men, not just my husband) may get a bit aroused by looking at me, but I don’t think that’s a big deal.

I am relying on my memory here…

I heard Jason Evert speak once and he explained that the belly button is the “window to the womb”, a most sacred part of a woman’s body, and therefore should be protected. He also drew an analogy between the “veil” that protects the Body of Christ in the tabernacle and clothing as a veil for the belly button.

My apologies to Jason if I butchered what he said. Maybe he’ll pop in an clarify if necessary!

Kathy
Men have bellybuttons too!!!

Careful… you’re opening the “modesty” can of worms here… 😃

Opinions will vary… (and yes, this is filled with sarcasm… 😉 )
~Women should wear only skirts… pants are immodest…
~Bare breasts are okay for breastfeeding in any location, including Mass…
~Swimwear is only appropriate in the marital bedroom…

😛
Opinions will vary all over the place… just wanting to warn ya! 😃
How are pants immodest??? I would think that a skirt is more immodest than pants??? I don’t wear skirts at all anymore. I am slim, but have ugly broken capillaries on my legs and don’t want to spend the money to have them zapped away. I don’t wear shorts either–for the same reason. So how are pants immodest???

From another thread, but i got this was the general opinion: apparently bikinis are immodest to wear while swimming, at least among US Catholics.

Why?

It’s an honest question, and I’m really curious.

I don’t see one’s stomach and back as sexually temtping in any way, so I really don’t understand how a bikini is more ‘immodest’ than a one-piece.

To be clear, I don’t think one-pieces are immodest either, as there is really nothing sexual about arms and such… 🤷
In my opinion very few women (in every age group) can get away with wearing a bikini. Immodest or not–anyone who wears a bikini invites everyone to gaze at their body flaws in addition to their attributes. I have seen even slim young women showing off their cellulite in a bikini. Why would you want to show the world your cellulite??? Same principle applies to one-piece bathing suits–if the cellulite shows then don’t wear it in public. Litcrit, are you a man or a woman?? Do you wear a bikini???

There is a reason for everything. Maybe women tend to have cellulite so that they are not so apt to wear a bikini or other skimpy clothing in public–doesn’t seem to work so well as a deterent though–because I’m seeing way too much of other women’s cellulite in public!

The test for modesty is the Blessed Virgin. You certainly wouldn’t find Our Lady wearing a bikini at the beach.

(Since others have already bumped the thread & I’m in a silly mood, I’m feeling free to do this…)

 OH NO! The Family Life Forum is being terrorized by the return of the undead Bikini thread! :hypno:

I thought we killed that thing! :bigyikes:

Help! Who will save us !?! :frighten:

Yeah, I just looked over there & man, has it gotten out of hand!

Where are the threadkillers when you need them??

(But, seriously, any thread that deals with gender relations/roles in this confused age seems doomed to turn into a big mess… )

I think this is smiley was made for such threads:slapfight:

I just realized when this thread was started! I wasn’t even a member of CAF at that point. However, I feel compelled to comment…
  1. Bikinis defined as triangles w/ string between seem to be objectively immodest b/c not much is covered & they slip/move to reveal even more often.
  2. Bikinis defined as 2 piece suits can be modest or immodest - depending on the cut and stay-in-place-ness of the suit.
  3. One piece suits can be modest or immodest - again depending on the cut & stay-in-place-ness of the suit, but are generally regarded as more modest than 2 pieces.
  4. Its hard to imagine Jesus in a Speedo or trunks or Mary in a bikini (or bathing suit for that matter), so I have a hard time making a decision based on that criteria. However, I believe that they would be able to judge the audience and base their modesty both on the audience & their own self-portrayal.
  5. Different cultures emphasis different things in their modesty/humility training of their children. If children are taught at an early age that the human body is beautiful and should be respected in all its forms, it seems that more revealing suits could be acceptable.
I’m generally very modest, but I have at least 2 2-piece bathing suits that may or may not be considered immodest by some, but very acceptable by others. They’re both halter-top but full coverage tops w/ the short-boy-shorts bottoms. I also have a one-piece that clings to every curve although still covers everything. However, I have what I call a bubble-butt - everything I put on my behind seems to end up in my crack (sorry for the graphic-ness). I tend not to go swimming except w/ my family and/or friends b/c of this. However, I’ve always felt my suits were quite modest - so has my mom, dad, brothers, & husband. Now I’m questioning all this b/c I never thought about how other men felt about my body. I carry myself generally very proudly and apparently (according to my husband & some guy friends I trust) exude “don’t touch me or even think of me that way” even though I’m fairly attractive & built fairly nicely (34D, 27, 38 5’6" 135 lbs). I mentioned on another modesty thread that modesty is in the behavior/demeanor/self-portrayal of the wearer as well as in the mind/heart of the viewer. Someone mentioned a story of a nun being able to walk naked through the streets w/o problem, but a ‘fallen’ woman fully clothed attracting stares.

***I think the question is…is it immodest in and of itself to wear a bikini (not a skimpy sports illustrated type) but a two piece suit, or does it BECOME immodest, because of how men react to them? That is really the question, in my mind. ***

I don’t think bikinis are immodest. I mean, they don’t have any “private parts” 😃

Seriously, I don’t think they can be immodest. However, the person can be immodest. I think it depends on how curvaceous or well endowed the woman is, where she is at, and what she is doing. I think I sound like a relativist:confused:, but allow me to continue with some illustrations. Our character will be “Bikini Nancy”, a mom in ther 30’s. In good shape, but not sensually attractive by today’s mainstream standards. She’s simply a regular healthy nice woman, who likes to wear a plain bikini everywhere she goes. I’ve created her the way she is to make the illustration simple.

Scenarios:
Bikini Nancy swimming at the beach = modest
Bikini Nancy at Sunday mass after swimming at the beach = immodest

Bikini Nancy at the beach passing out snacks to her family = modest
Bikini Nancy serving snacks at her son’s pool party for the guys = immodest

Bikini Nancy with her husband on a cruise ship = modest
Bikini Nancy alone in the corridor with her male cruise ship neighbor = immodest

Bikini Nancy by the community pool = modest
Bikini Nancy washing the car in front of the house = immodest

Bikini Nancy walking her 5 yr old son down by the beach = modest
Bikini Nancy walking her 5 yr old son to class = immodest

I hope I’ve been helpful,
-Martin

I’ve been told by CAF that I haven’t ‘posted on our forums in quite some time’ (busy marking students’ midterm essays). So I decided to add to the Frankenstein I created despite having vouched never to return to it again 🙂

There seem to be different standards of ‘decency’ posing as ‘modesty’ circulating out there:
  1. what’s socially appropriate / acceptable in a situation (jeans / a tracksuit / PJs is not proper church attire) - depends on the culture
  2. what’s considered to be ‘covering enough skin to be decent’ (your face / knees / belly-button can or cannot be seen by strangers) - depends on the culture
  3. what’s likely not to make the opposite sex commit the sin of lust - (your hair / above knee-length skirts / bikinis are a clear expression of wantonness and thus an invitation to the opposite sex to lust after one - depends on the culture:
Men in many African tribes don’t see women’s breasts as sexual and are not excited by them - because they are used to seeing them exposed all the time.

Men in SE Europe - the Balkans don’t see women’s bellies and backs as sexual and are not excited by them - because they are used to seeing them exposed all the time.

Men in the USA don’t see women’s faces, arms and ankles as sexual and are not excited by them - because they are used to seeing them exposed all the time.

Living Her earthly existence when She did, Mary would not wear a bikini. Nor would She wear a one-piece. Or shorts and a T-shirt. Or jeans. Or a knee-length skirt. Nor would She EVER reveal Her hair - She’d cover it at all times as it would be the ONLY modest option for a woman. She’d never watch TV or visit an Internet forum or call someone on the phone. What’s the point of this exercise of the imagination?

After almost a year and still more weight gained :D, I, a wife and mother, still wear my good old two-piece swimsuit. It reveals less than many one-pieces I’ve seen and I find it prectical to swim and sunbathe in. I still fail to understand how it can be viewed as intrinsically less ‘modest’ and thus more ‘sinful’ than a one-piece - merely because my stomach and back are revealed - but I have long since stopped trying to logically analyze it.

This year, I’ll be using my swimsuit only in my back yard, and in Greece, end of season, empty beaches, just a few bikini-clad, cellulite-sporting grannies, my SIL and her two tiny kids, my husband, my 2yoDD, and the evil, bikini-clad me!

Did she tell you this?

How do we know, if Mary were born in modern times, that she would not be a swimmer?

Very well said, that’s exactly what I was thinking!

Using the Blessed Virgin as the standard in this case is awkward. This is not to say that her modesty in general should not be followed as an example by all women or even men. But the degree of modesty Our Lady exhibits is for the consecrated women such as nuns (I have a lot of respect for these devout women. Please don’t take what I said the wrong way.). She had a specific function, that is total and direct devotion to the Lord. She is the ever-virgin, consecrated to our Lord. Nuns and consecrated women are very similar. Everyone else is a different matter. I’m not very good at explaining myself, but I hope I made some sense.

I don’t think the bikini you’re talking about is immodest in & of itself. Its immodest b/c of the portrayal of the wearer and/or the eyes of the beholder. The same IMO is true of much fashion these days.

This suit is a one piece, but it bares most of the back & even sides… Its still modest IMO though.

I don’t think any of the suits on this page are blatantly immodest.

I wonder why so many of the suits on the pages given by choose to love are black. I think I’d probably skip the black if I was going to have to cover up that much while swimming/sun bathing.

***I typically wear one pieces now, for fear of sun damage…too many years in the sun when I was in my 20’s…it catches up!!

But, when I have worn two pieces, I have always worn a cover up type skirt/dress, so I never really walked around the beach wearing a two piece. I think that swimming with one on would be ok…but, if one is walking around on the beach, and you’re wearing a two piece…just buy a cute coverup…and then, it will be instantly modest. :)***
