I agree with virtually every word of the article. Spewing venom and hatred is no way to spread Christ’s message. Donohue does not speak for me and every time I see him put forth as speaking for Catholics I cringe.
Well it was the way Christ did it sometimes!

Yay!I knew one of you would jump on the bandwagon-there should be dozens, judging by recent posts on his rough Irish Catholic style. Are you even a Catholic? You don’t ID yourself as one.If you are,why not/.If you aren’t,what business is it of yours?

Why do we need a Catholic League? Does the Church need defending?

Thank God for Bill Donohue!!

The media just can’t stand it that he beats them at their own game.

He manipulated those fools into making him a household name.If he didn’t do it would you Mr.Ouiville or you i

That was a great article.

I agree with every word of it.

If I am baptised Catholic next Easter, Donohue and his organization wont be getting any support from me, and he certainly wont be speaking on my behalf about anything.

I think the Catholic League is important, I’m just not sure Donahue is the man for the job.

His record speaks for itself, the Catholic League are only relevant because of him, before he took charge I had never even heard of them, and I suspect neither had a lot of people.

The Catholic Church was not founded to be a impotent bourgeois institution I’m sorry some of you seem determined to make it that way by trying to force everyone who displays a little bit of aggressiveness in imitation of Christ’s own aggressiveness out of His Church by turning your nose up at us “nasty” people.

We in this world are the Church militant and always will be, ultimately you either fight or you die, God put you here to fight for Him, not betray Him by making nice with His enemies.

"Have I not hated them, O Lord, that hated thee: and pine away because of thy enemies? I have hated them with a perfect hatred: and they are become enemies to me. " Psalm 138:21-22

Bill is a classic example of a proverbial diamond in the rough. His message is good, but his delivery and presentation are too often frightfully inept. The result is that his effectiveness is often compromised.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. Father Jonathon Morris is now frequently on Fox News to combat tirades against the Church. He is mild-mannered, polite and accurately portrays what comes from the Vatican. I always agree with what he says BUT it is not memorable.

When Bill Donahue throws a hissy fit, I remember. And I guess the detractors do too, lest there would not be a campaigne to get rid of him. When he retires, I hope there is one just like him to continue to fight for the Church.
That’s really part and parcel of the whole media dance, whether we like it or not. I know a certain pro-life advocate who operates similarly. Donahue knows how to get noticed. I think “shock-and-awe” is the technical term. 😛

I would prefer if such tactics were not necessary, but they evidently work to some extent. As Didymus posted, he grew the Catholic League’s membership by at least 2000%!

That’s why it’s so ironic to me to see this article in the Huffington Post. They employ exactly the same type of tactics for their own causes. Go figure. 🤷

If I am baptised Catholic next Easter…
I’ll be praying for you!

I think that is the fairest response I’ve seen. How many people do we agree (or disagree) with, 100% of the time? Sometimes I disagree with Donahue’s message. Sometimes I disagree with Donahue’s delivery. Sometimes I disagree with both. Sometimes I agree with one or the other, or both.

But I do appreciate most of his efforts, and think he is well-intentioned, regardless about how I feel regarding a particular issue.

Either way, should Donohue resign, since a “non-religious” PoHuff religion blogger, who also writes “Why Christianity Must Adapt – Or Perish” (adapt to “modern times”) says so?

Bill Donohue might well be an embarrassment to some. He is a salty Irishman who says it like it is. A “diamond in the rough” so to speak. What I see coming from him is TRUTH. Well, if TRUTH is an embarrassment to some, Catholic or Non, so be it. Some people don’t like the truth…makes them terribly uncomfortable. I like Jack Nickelson’s line …“TRUTH? YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!”😉

Presentation of the message is the key here…a good analogy is why people couldn’t stand Bush but LOVE Obama…Bush had a hard time communicating…Obama is a natural…simple as that.

I didn’t know who Bill Donohue was (and I’m guessing that outside the US not many know him) until I heard him on Irish radio last year in the wake of the publication of the Ryan report, trying to minimise the suffering of the victims of institutional abuse in Ireland and excuse the behaviour of the priests and religious who perpetrated incredibly cruel and vicious acts, physical and sexual, on children in their care. Needless to say, his was an insensitive and arrogant intrusion into something he clearly knew nothing about. As one of those being interviewed with him - a victim of clerical abuse - said: “I just feel terribly sorry for you that you have neither the humility, or the humanity to understand what’s being spoken about here”.

I note that he is referred to here as ‘a rough Irish Catholic’ and a ‘salty Irishman’ - as if this was a justification for his behaviour - but could I point out, as someone who is both native Irish and Catholic, that Bill Donohoe may have Irish heritage/ancestry but he is neither an Irishman nor an Irish Catholic.

It is interesting, though. I went and read the Catholic League’s statement on Lady Gaga that was referenced in the article from the OP and I found it to be much more tame and subdued than the article lets on.

Here it is:

Perhaps some of Bill Donahue’s perceived brashness comes from the spin given by his detractors.

Well, the article makes some strong and accurate criticisms of Donahue. I don’t know if they rise to the level of requiring him to resign, however.

I don’t know why folks are discussing the article author.
I thought you don’t read articles from partisan sources…
